I don’t see why there can’t be a monolingual world.
You know what else can reveal a societies culture? The society, when they tell you using the universal language. Language barriers distort culture.
And people could just play sudoku or something.

I’ve really enjoyed learning Thai….Most thoughts and feelings are replicated and expressed in more or less the same way……..some things surprise though and illuminate a different perspective, from a different culture.
Being able to think in two or more languages is like thinking in colour…….compared to just black and white.
In any case ‘life’ is about being able to adapt………Species that lose the ability to adapt ……are doomed.
………..And the difference between a rut and a grave is only the depth’

I hesitate to support the idea of a monolingual world. In theory it sounds great but in reality it would probably be hijacked and used as a way to erase non-Western cultures.

Actually, We’d eat at McDonald’s. Don’t think spelling wouldn’t be absorbed into the uniform brush.
And as for cultures, erase them all.

Thanks for the spelling correction……I still have trouble with McCartney…
Although should that be a capital ‘W’ in, ‘We’d’? You know…. following a comma and all?
As for erase all cultures …….Good to see you have a sense of humour.
In my culture we’d erase with a rubber you know……..We would, ‘rub out other cultures’ …..And don’t think our Victorian missionaries didn’t try to do exactly that. And they’ve since come in for a lot of criticism for it…..Quite right too!
Ah well, ‘keep your pecker up’ and have a great 2019.

I’m at the other end of the age ‘spectrum’ to many of you……..and have realised that a time comes in your life when every day subtracts more from less…….
Here’s a thought I consider worth sharing….Give you a head start so to speak.

What are your thoughts on feminism. Personally, i prefer humanism since it values men and women equally as opposed to feminism which places women first but i don’t typically have a problem with the movement.
I used to despise feminism since the most popular feminists often go overboard and pretend women under Sharia Law are doing just fine and sadly those are the ones you hear about the most but after spending time with feminists you realize that most feminists aren’t like that.
Although i don’t think the movement is necessary since women aren’t oppressed, most feminists have the best interest.
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

… there are plenty of women being oppressed in this world.
To me, feminism and humanism go hand in hand. I don’t think females are superior to males, I think they’re equal and should be treated as such. Yet I consider myself a feminist.

I should’ve specified on a few things.
First, there are places in the world where gender inequality exists, i meant they’re not oppressed in the US.
Also, when i said feminists place women first, i meant they care more about women’s issues then men’s issues, i didn’t mean that women view men as inferior.

That’s kind of what feminism is….
Just curious though: how do you define oppression @Dark Overlord ?

One thing that bothers me about modern feminism is the emphasis on women’s rights in the US and Europe, meanwhile a whole load of countries give women absolutely no rights. Not to say that women of the west don’t face challenges , but the fight for women’s rights is much more difficult in other countries, and to me it seems like people are either unware or too afraid to face the issue.

The reason why it’s called feminism and not humanism, is because it’s always been women’s rights that have been far behind those of men in the past. Obviously the suffragists wanted all men to be allowed to vote too, but the men already had the ability, so they were campaigning for equality in the form of giving women the rights they deserved.
As for women not being oppressed, hasn’t all the MeToo movement over the past couple years shown that there are still entire industries where women are objectified and coerced into sexual favours in exchange for career advancement from rich and powerful men? Women have just about got equal rights legally in most modern countries, but that doesn’t necessarily prevent oppression less obvious to the naked eye.
I do agree that more focus needs to be on helping Islamic women, as they are certainly in a much worse situation than most women living in the developed world, but we must be very careful that this doesn’t lead to hatred against Islamic people themselves. Personally, I feel that all of the Abrahamic religions are outdated and problematic at this point, but the problems need to be addressed rationally rather than the rampart hatred that seems to be the tactic of a lot of people.
(I’m not accusing you of this, just warning about the rabbit hole that these issues can be into worse viewpoints)
