What are your thoughts on cultural appropriation. Personally, I think it’s racist to tell people of certain races that they can’t do certain things that are part of another race’s culture. For example, I see nothing wrong with a black guy wearing a Native American costume or a Chinese person wearing a kilt or a white person sharing Michael Jackson GIFs on the internet. In fact, I love the idea of mixing various cultures together because I think it shows racial equality because if any race can do any thing related to any race, then there’s no racism to be had. I can understand why people would want to have this but calm down, let people do their own thing regardless of their race.
Pretty old post but i mostly agree with you. Personally I think that as long as you’re respectful to the culture, you have no racist agenda and you properly understand the implications of what you’re doing it’s fine. For example, you could call our Georgie’s interest in Hindustani classical music (and incorporation into his own music) cultural appropriation, but it’s pretty clear by the lengths he went to immerse himself in the culture, his lifelong commitment to it and his respect for its masters like Ravi Shankar that George had only good intentions.

Couldn’t agree more, nothing quite sucks like regional differences, especially when it comes to language because neither of you can understand each other if you both speak different languages.
Fortunately, many non-English speaking countries are learning ESL, the US is using the metric system along with the imperial system, most of the world drives on the same side of the road, and you can buy converters to convert UK plugs into US ones or vice versa.
But the worst problem of them all is region locking.
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

I like the idea of the whole earth understanding each other, but languages are just so beautiful. I would say have everyone learn a second language along with their regional language, as is being discussed above.

Yeah that would be nice. Like if everyone had a native language based on whatever country they lived in, and then everyone would learn like a global language as their second language. That would be really cool.

Have you guys not heard of Google translate? It’s not perfect, but it’s good enough. That’s what my host mom used to communicate when we couldn’t understand her. I think it can even say it out loud for you.
That’s not the point. It would be nice if we didn’t need things like Google Translate.

I agree with the plug thing, the UK/Irish plugs are far safer than the European ones, so I believe we should all switch to the big chunky 3-prongs.
As regards languages, eh, we’re all fortunate in being English speakers on here. If you go to any other country where English isn’t the native language, you’ll most likely be in touristy areas where the locals you’d need to talk to would also speak English. The only place (granted I’ve only been in Europe) where I had trouble communicating was in Italy, where I was in the middle of nowhere. The owners couldn’t speak English, my Italian is appalling, so we spoke b*****d-German to one another.
Driving direction it would be nice to have a universal direction but I know it would be right-side driving, and coming from a left-side driving country, it would make me cry, and also if we’re to bring back sword-fighting- it’s much easier to be on the left-side than the right so…

Saying we should have one language in the world is like saying we should kill off a bunch of cultures.
But even if everybody in the world spoke English, that wouldn’t mean we’d all be able to understand each other. Some accents are super hard for me to understand (probably most accents outside of the US). When I went to Spain a few years ago, I went with a group of Americans, and there was one Spanish person in our group. She could understand everybody else’s English just fine, but couldn’t understand almost anything I said in English (she said my accent was too thick, but I could barely tell the difference between mine and the other people’s accents). There are Spanish accents I have an easier time with than most English ones, and my Spanish is garbage.

But if you read my above posts, you’ll see that’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m saying that in addition to the many languages that already exist, there could be another language that everyone could learn to speak in addition to their native language. Not that it would ever happen, it was just a thought.

There’s a girl from Mississippi in Germany with me, and she rarely understands anything I say when I’m talking in my normal speech-pattern. I have to slow right down when talking to her (but that might just be because she’s from Mississippi, oosh low blow ASJ). I understand her just fine but she said Germans find it difficult to understand her when she’s speaking English, whereas they have no problems with me (when I’m forced to speak English, I try my darnedest to not speak English around Germans or they will never talk in German with you).
Also a monolingual Earth would be incredibly boring, and don’t make me go on a rant about the Brits trying to kill the Irish language again please.

Have you heard of Esperanto, Fiddy? We tried to make an all-encompassing language but it’s failed in trying to get people to learn it. There are an estimated 2-10 million speakers, not incredibly impressive.

I couldn’t imagine most Americans being okay with having to learn a second language. I can’t tell you how often I hear people ragging on others for not knowing or exclusively using English (and yet we pride ourselves on being a “melting pot”)

Wow I spend 7 hours asleep and this happens!
A monolingual earth, for many reasons, cannot exist. Besides, being able to speak more than one language greatly increases your brain capacity (what does that say about monolinguals who refuse to learn a second language?)
Languages can reveal so much about regional culture so why get rid of that?
