That was a very sad story @Ron Nasty and it’s why I haven’t brought up incest on this forum in quite awhile. If you don’t mind, I’d like to share my response to you privately via email since it involves personal stuff that I don’t want the people on this forum to know about. What I will say on this forum, however, is that what your father did was clearly wrong. Thanks for sharing your story.

Ron’s situation to me far supercedes the power imbalance of Hollywood predators and domestic violence. A father and son is the most imbalanced setup of power, and it is a Father’s duty to set an example and use that power responsibly. Your father Ron, distustingly misused this natural authority that he had over you.
The other tragic difference I see here is the idea that for bosses and boyfriends, there can be a shift in culture that changes the norm, and if people simply ostracize the accused pretadors, then the problem will slowly die, yet people barely talk about ways to identify abusive situations and give the help needed.
A big problem with a situation like this is that people are too often afraid to look into a family situation and try to chane it if something is wrong. Family matters are often seen as COMPLETELY PRIVATE, yet often the most f****d up violations of justice occur within the household.
This is brought up in political and social philosophy. Can a political system that doesn’t punish people for events within the privacy of their own home be a just society. Many feminists and gay rights advocates say no, because often times basic human rights can be violated if the guardian decides to enforce gender roles, punish a child for his or her sexuality, or sexually abuse their own child in this sad case.
Ron, I’ve known you for a while, and this is the first time I’ve heard this story. I just want you to know that I have a lot of respect for you.

What are your thoughts on America’s current electoral system. Personally, I think it needs to be changed and improved upon. One of my problems with this system is that not every vote counts. For example, if 51% of California votes for Joe and 49% of them vote for John, California is now 100% for Joe, which is unfair, this leads to elections where the person with the most votes loses because they lost in a few bigger states.
Another problem I have with these elections is that while you can vote 3rd party, you are highly discouraged from doing so and there’s only 1 Republican and 1 Democrat who have a chance of winning and it really sucks too. This election, we had Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, one who’s like a kid in a candy shop when it comes to being president and another who is inconsistent with her views and was facing prison time while running for president, or for short, neither worthy of being president IMO. However, there was also Gary Johnson and Jill Stein who were the best of both worlds and were both superior to both candidates IMO but they got largely ignored because they’re 3rd party candidates and so we got Trump instead.
The way I say we fix these elections is by getting rid of this whole representative thing and every vote counts, we also make it clear to everyone that they should vote 3rd party if that person is the best option and we should allow 2 people from each party to run in the final elections as opposed to 1 and I’d also allow people of all ages to vote and drop the president age from 35 to 18 so people that were previously unable to vote or run for president now can.

Something I find very disturbing is that sex crimes are covered by the statute of limitations in the US. Sexual violation often takes a long time to admit. In the UK we are sending these people to prison, while in America, people are getting away with their disgusting behaviour because of the statute of limitations. Rolf Harris is in prison because of the UK system of dealing with these crimes, while many American offenders, like Bill Cosby, cannot be charged.
And, to a degree, I feel sorry for those people. They can never, because of US law, prove themselves innocent of being an abuser.
I also find it very disturbing that the US legal system allows payment for silence on sex crimes. This is why the flood that Weinstein started is so shocking, not that he could act in that way because he felt he could, but because the legal system lets him/her off, and that he often paid to avoid legal charges.
That just wouldn’t occur in the UK.
It took me twenty years to start admitting what was done to me, and in the US none of the abuse I endured could be charged just because of the passage of time.
I wonder if our American friends really believe their sex crimes laws support victims.

While I see where you’re coming from, there’s a reason why the statute of limitations is still there. Let’s say it’s 1956 and your 17 years old and you get really pissed off at your friend because he won’t give you back your money that he borrowed so you get into a fight which ends with you stabbing him in the back giving him chronic back problems. He doesn’t press charges at first but then it’s 2017, you’re almost 80 years old and now he decides to press charges over something that happened over 60 years ago. Fortunately, thanks to the statute of limitations that can’t happen. Overall, it would be nice if they gave you more time for things like child abuse but completely abolishing the statute of limitations would be a bad idea.

I agree. It’s clear that the Electoral College thing. Preventing unqualified morons like Donald Trump taking office is precisely the reason why it was set up in the first place and it didn’t even do that! It seems like all it really accomplishes these days is gypping the people out of who they actually voted for.
Anyway, if it were to be replaced with something else, I hope that the people who figure out what to replace it with are smarter than me.

What do we all think of euthanasia. For Australians, it’s a very touchy subject, as Victoria became the first state to legalise it last month.
Personally, I believe it should be legal. If someone is suffering greatly, and will die from the suffering anyway, they should have the right to end their pain if they want to.
And happy 3000th post to me!

I think it should be their choice, if they want it then kill them otherwise don’t. The only thing though is that if it is due to chronic depression or being very old as opposed to a physical terminal illness, then I think they should have to wait for a long time (say 10 years) before they die just in case if they change their mind and also, I’m against it when the patient is unable to say whether they want to die, such as in the Terri Schavo case.

What are your thoughts on the whole girls in boy scouts thing. This is very unique compared to other things in that there are conservatives for and against it and liberals for and against it as opposed to one side feeling one way and the other side feeling the other way. Personally, I think it would be nice if they got rid of girl scouts all together and allowed girls in boy scouts and renamed it scouts but the way they’re doing it I’m against.
You see, they’re going to allow girls into boy scouts and girl scouts but they’re only allowing boys in boy scouts. That’s not equality, that’s misandry and I think it’s wrong to give girls more (or less) options than boys. Women deserve equality but so do men and this whole endeavor is sexist towards men IMO.
I’ve heard people say time and time again “that’s what girl scouts are for”, most notably from Donald Trump Jr. but both scouting organizations do different activities, boy scouts do things typically associated with masculinity like using guns and learning survival skills while girl scouts does more things typically associated with femininity like baking and selling cookies and I think allowing girls to do more masculine stuff and vice versa if they’d like would be great, however I don’t think this is the way to do it.

Girl Scouts also teach important outdoor and survival skills. Its a matter of gender identification, which is extremely rare at the age of entering boy scouts anyway.

I was in Girl Scouts for 4 years and we sat inside and ate snacks and made home crafts. The most outdoorsy thing we did was to go outside and collect leaves for leaf shading.

Hmmm. My mother went all the way through girl scouts and learned many useful outdoor skills.
