The territorial claims of animals, such as bears, are very different to humans since they have innate instincts to survive. This is where the darwinist survival of the fittest idea comes into play.
So do humans. We also have a desire to survive. And survival of the fittest applies to the human species just like any other life form.
And having other animals benefits humans so it makes sense for them to want them around.

How far should we tolerate controversial opinions on various subjects on this forum?
I am sure there is both a hard and soft limit on this and maner of argument should be taken into account.

It depends on how controversial, the language used, the context, the meaning and a whole lot of other stuff. We mods try to find a balance but it can be very difficult at times trying to find and maintain it so we miss the mark and either act too quickly or too slowly.
I generally tend to get annoyed rather than offended by what people say, more ‘what on earth are you taking about!!?’ than ‘How can you say that?’. There is a difference, I think.

I think people need to remember this is a Beatles’ forum not some ‘hey is incest a good idea or not?’ forum. We’re all here because we’re Beatles fans but practically everything else isn’t the same, we’re all different genders, ages, nationalities, religions, beliefs and those are just going to clash.
More Beatles’ talk, less yipyap!

While this is a Beatles forum, I don’t think that we are unable to discuss things outside of them in the appropriate place. I believe people can be civil, like threads about different bands and options on them I think is perfectly alright in the non-Beatles section.
Conversely, there can be times when Beatles talk can cross a line or two.

Yes, totally, absolutely agree. Thank you for saying that. Especially everything political is very likely to cause unnecessary arguments and may scare other Beatles fans away.

If you don’t like the conversation, then don’t follow it or join it. Doesn’t mean you should stop others from discussing (as long as it’s reasonable discussion).

Oh yeah I have no problem with people discussing ‘Is Queen crap or not?’, that isn’t going to hit home to someone…unless they’re a member of Queen.
It’s things like abortion, gay-marriage, legalizing weed, things like that you’re really just looking for an angry debate. It’s very difficult to explain your thoughts and get someone of a different belief to understand and accept them, and I think the past 39 pages of this thread can prove that. The forum had a dark period a while ago when certain users were essentially calling other people ‘idiots’ for their opinions (I include myself in that statement, I amn’t pointing the finger at anyone in particular), and stuff like that just isn’t acceptable on a forum that’s about some band from the ’60s (and the mods and admins have been fab with enforcing that).
The heart of this forum is The Beatles, it’s not a general discussion, or debate forum. Users only end up being pissed off with one another which breaks down the wonderful camaraderie that this forum has.

I’m a huge fan of this thread but it has been relatively inactive recently. Fierce debate among friends can be a very good thing.
If I may, I would like to open up a dialogue about the events and repercussions of Charlottesville that Zig and Starr Shine talked about in the news thread. Clearly this is a massive racial issue, and I’m not quite sure what to think about it.

I was going to post this in the Getting-to know BBers thread, but it a)it’s better suited here, and b) @Martha has a current question there.
So, where do you stand on this test? If you give me the coordinates you get, I can put it into one big BB chart for all of us!
I’ll start:
That’s odd. I’m having lots of trouble with uploading the picture… It’s not allowing me to, no matter what I do. Well, until it gets sorted out, I’m -9.63, -7.13, which puts me in the anarcho-communism territory. I never knew I was so far left…
Edit: sorry, I linked to nothing…

I’m not sure if that fits here. This is about asking more of an open ended question. With this, you can post your result and leave it at that.
It is better in the derail thread. Plus there isn’t a link to a quiz in your post
Personality I find personality quizzes tend to suffer from the Forer effect.

Well, the reason I put it here is this: If I’m an anarcho-communist, and someone on here is a fascist, there would be a heated debate as to who is right, and that’s the reason this thread was made. This was an attempt to get some political debate going, specifically if you prioritise environment, economy, equality, eg.
As for the Forer effect: I totally agree. But it’s not going to put me in the far right corner if I’m far-left, so an approximation is still good enough for our purposes of having a conversation.

How would an anarcho-communistic society work in modern day? I’m doubtful that it would say an an anarcho-communisum for long.

I land pretty much on the same spot on the compass as you @The Hole Got Fixed.
I used to be a believer in anarcho-communism back in my uni days, but nowadays I think it’s just utopian middle class pipe dream. If you are interested in learning more about it I’d read some Kropotkin though.

That was an interesting quiz, my coordinates are – 7, – 8.05 so I land at roughly the same spot as you two, too. So apparently we’re all little anarchists.. . Unfortunately, I don’t really think anarcho communism would work as a state concept as well, although I really wish it would. Then again it could also be that we’re just not used to it since most of us live in capitalistic states and therefore can’t imagine it. It’s always very hard to imagine something if one lived with the opposite one’s whole life. So maybe in a society which wasn’t prejudiced, it would work. Thanks for giving a reading recommendation, Flyingbrians, I find this topic very interesting!
I really wonder where in the chart Paul, John, George, and Ringo would have landed…

I don’t understand how the two ideas would mesh at all. Anarchists want the government to control nothing. Communists want the government to control everything.

The ideal of communism is essentially anarchist in belief but since we’re not cavemen anymore that’s quite difficult.
