Ron Nasty, it’s kind of funny how you’re British yet the one thing I think the UK does better you think the US does better, I don’t know why you’d prefer not to be able to legally drink until 21 anyways.
Never said that. I suggested that the age of 21 doesn’t apply in most of the world, including my country, and so it doesn’t affect me.

You didn’t say it directly, but with a message like this:I live in a country where it is 18, shoot me!
You imply that you wish the drinking age was 21 in the UK.
In the English vernacular, rather than the American, the phrase “shoot me” means punish me for being blessed.
So, I might also have said, “I live in a country where it is 18, boo me!”
I intended to say nothing more than it’s something that has never applied to me.

I like the German system- 16 years for the light stuff i.e. beer, wine, and cider
18 for spirits.
Teens are going to drink anyways, and it’s around 14-15 years old that they generally start (least my side of the pond it is), might as well buy it legally, in a controlled setting like a pub, rather than having to down cans before you get on a bus to go to a youth club or whatever.
Teens will still binge drink but I think there’d be less danger of having to get their stomach pumped if alcohol was treated as a more ‘normal’ thing that you have 1 or two pints or glasses of wine and then stop, rather than be passing out after having 10 pints in one sitting or something ridiculous.

People want to act like alcohol is normal and harmless, but there are many downsides to alcohol. I personally don’t think people realize how dangerous it can be for the human body, especially for growing/maturing bodies. There are actual reasons the drinking age is 21 here, and the argument for that is a lot more substantial than “kids are going to do it anyway, so why try to stop them?”.

What are those reasons? And the argument isn’t “why bother” so much as “we are wasting resources trying to enforce an utterly ineffective law.”
Personally, I’d prefer to see marijuana legalized for 18 and up, but people do like their alcohol…

Do you consider yourself anti-natalist or natalist?
Going back to this question.
I wonder if birth rates would decline in poorer countries if circumstances (higher personal income/work, more ecducation, less religion) for women in those countries changed. https://www.psychologytoday.co…..child-free
I don’t have children.
My coworker from China says that even though the government has ended the one-child policy, many couples don’t have more than one because having and bring up children is expensive.

Prison isn’t as bad as people tell you it is and I’ve actually had some fun moments I there. Think about it, you get 3 meals a day, you’re not typically around your parents, you get to hang out with friends all day, and you even get some free time. I’ve been to prison on multiple occasions for various crimes and it’s honestly not that bad, as long as you can prove to your inmates that you’re not afraid to fight and that you’re not weak.

I do think the United States should legalize cocaine and marijuana. Nobody decides not to do it because it is illegal, and legalizing it would eliminate the cartel.

I live in a community where Muslims, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and people of other or no religion at all live side by side. Nothing is perfect, but generally, people get along and treat each other with a level of decency and cordiality. I realize that I don’t live in the middle east and that life is different everywhere you go. But as someone who interacts with people from different religions and cultures and walks of life every single day, I firmly believe that the things we all have in common are stronger than the things we do not.

Saying “Nobody decides not to do it because it is illegal” is a very sweeping statement. I’m sure a lot of people are put off with not wanting to break the law and have a criminal record, even if it is for something that many would consider trivial or wrong.

You can make that same argument for anything, child porn, assault, armed robbery, treason, genocide, etc., it’s a stupid argument and if you’re going to convince someone that pot and crack should be legal, you need think of more than just that.

Its different because the government couldn’t regulate legal murder or robbery. Drugs and prostitution could be reulated and made safer to prevent overdoses releated to dirty drugs and the spread of stds.
Also, murder and assault directly harm other citizens, so it should be illegal. Consuming drugs is a personal choice, and if the government directed attention to making the drug trade safer it could save a lot of lives. The government shouldn’t tell people what they can and can’t put into their bodies.

I think we should legalize all recreational drugs. It’s not the government’s job to make people’s personal health decisions for them. Not to mention that the War on Drugs is a colossal, expensive waste of time that is often just used as an excuse to throw non-white people in jail. Our time, money, and energy would be better spent treating people with drug problems instead of throwing them in jail.
And, as swr hinted at, when you make something a crime, you create criminals.

If the legalize all drugs, there would probably be an increase in people who are intoxicated at bad times.

Those who are inclined to misuse substances are so inclined – the legality of one particular substance doesn’t make them more or less so. What you might see if you legalized marijuana is that folks who might otherwise overindulge in alcohol or pain killers might overindulge in marijuana. I doubt that the actual incidence of people being excessively or inappropriately intoxicated would increase, the landscape would just evolve.
I don’t support legalizing cocaine, but I wholeheartedly support legalizing marijuana.
