I was watching Man of Steel last night and it reminded me of something that often annoys me in a film – the bit where some character puts their life at risk over one of our furry friends. I imagine said scenes are meant to make us feel a bit of suspense over the outcome, or real fear if we love our pets more than life itself. For me, they just have me wanting to yell “who thought that was a good idea?” at the screen (as a proxy for whacking the director with Maxwell’s Silver Hammer ). Some examples, and there are FAR too many to choose from:
- Enemy of the State / I, Robot-
Will Smith almost being blown into a million tiny pieces in Enemy of the State while chasing Gene Hackman’s cat (and did he also almost die in I, Robot rescuing a cat?)
- Independence Day –
The lady playing Will Smith’s wife in Independence Day almost being vaporised by aliens while saving her dog
- Man of Steel –
Said scene in Man of Steel where Jonathan Kent sacrificed his life to save the family mutt, who didn’t even have the good sense to turn into Krypto and at least make the sacrifice worthwhile. All of the family HATED that scene in what we otherwise felt to be a pretty good bit of escapist fun
Does anyone else have a ‘favourite’ film moment along these lines?

I do not know if this counts, but, another Will Smith, in I am Legend, he almost dies trying to save his dog. Even though it sadly dies later.
Will Smith again? He must really love the family pet – or be an expert at finding movies with really lame scenes in them – or both

Sorry for being daft but what is the massive spoiler in this thread?
Just all the plot points in the films if you haven’t seen them yet. I particularly had Man of Steel in mind as it is recently out on video and some folks may not have seen it yet.

Yeah, I suppose if you don’t want to know about what happens in films then you should avoid this thread. Personally, I hate it when someone tells me what the story’s about and how everyone dies or moves away or whatever. End up not watching it as I know what happens.
Apart from the obvious ones, like Lassie (if the film even called that?), I can’t think of any examples of animals on the big screen. Can’t even remember the last time I sat down and watched a good film. Maybe last Christmas…

You might want to try putting the spoilers between spoiler tags, btw. Because otherwise, I feel like I have to avoid the entire thread to avoid reading about a film I haven’t seen yet.

Have you posted a link before? It’s like that. You can type out the spoiler, highlight it in its entirety, then click on the smiley above with the sunglasses (it’s shaded at first, but it’ll show up as soon as you highlight your text).
Let me know if you still need help.

Spoilers can be a drag. I’m still trying to get over my disappointment after somebody let on that the group will split up in the third volume of Mark Lewisohn’s trilogy! Oops! And there’s me letting on to anybody else that didn’t know!
I really should learn to
