My music teacher did that to me yesterday at lunchtime! I feel your pain!

The most frustrating is when you do it to yourself.

… or when it happens in a concert in the middle of a heavy-metal-fastest-and-loudest-scales-ever kind of solo.

Yes.
Today’s peeve: flies in the eyes. (Well, gnats, but flies rhymes with eyes.) Fortunately, there are these things called glasses.

Aww, poor AngryC. I feel your pain — my emails were being obtuse the other day and very annoying ’twas, I attempted to send one little message five times! Hope you sort it soon. Might it cheer you if I confessed I happen to be listening to ‘Gallows Pole’ by yeah, that band right at this moment?

Thanks. I hope so too (I prefer talking face-to-face with people but you can’t always do that, of course ).

People who slit bicycle tyres. Because of one of them I had to walk home in the pouring rain with two saxophones for more than one hour this evening. Grrrr
However, there was also something nice about it. Since it rained so heavily, there were no people around the streets and so I could sing Beatles tunes as loudly as I wanted all the way home without annoying anyone. Needless to say, Rain and Penny Lane were among the songs I sang.

I’ve never had someone slit my bicycle tires before (didn’t even know people did this) but i have walked in the pouring rain before and although it sucks that everything gets wet, i like it because it’s like a water park, which segues like The Prophet’s Song and Love Of My Life into my pet peeve:
I hate when pools and water parks close when it’s raining, rain is water so there’s no reason to not swim outdoors in the rain or close down a water park because it’s pouring rain outside.

When people call the Republic, ‘Southern Ireland’. I was in France a few weeks ago and everyone asked me was I from the ‘North or the South’, I’d always answer with the Republic . The ROI was briefly referred to as ‘Southern Ireland’ for little more than a year, I’d accept someone calling it the ‘Free State’ (1922-1937) or the Irish-language version ‘Éire’ far more than the dreaded Southern Ireland.
It’s like asking someone from Berlin if they live in East or West Germany .

Why would North Korea refer to themselves as democrat instead of communist, is it because they think that communism is disliked by most of the world.
Interesting question but you’re probably correct. I would say that whilst communist isn’t used, socialist has been used before. Take the USSR for example – Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. I think they probably just prefer the word socialist since it’s more of a catch-all phrase.
I can only think that North Korea refer to themselves as democratic to somehow mask the fact that they are the opposite. I believe a few other countries have had similar names but I can’t think of any right now.

So, @Martha, do you live in East or West Germany?
Actually, we still say East and West Germany in informal situations every once in a while.

After the second World War, the Korean peninsula was divided into an American and a Sovietan part. However, it was decided that eventually Korea should become an independent state with its own government. As the tension between USA and Russia increased during the Cold War this decision was more and more ignored though and no party spent any effort on reaching a reunification anymore. In 1948 South Korea held its first democratic election in a long time and after that the newly elected government proclaimed the Republic Of Korea, meaning the whole peninsula. As a reaction the Northern part of Korea proclaimed the Democratic Republic Of Korea a few days later, meaning the whole peninsula too. Both parts considered themselves as representatives of the whole peninsula and the ones that will bring unity to the whole country. Additionally, North Korea probably wanted to stress its democratic values given South Korea was the first to hold democratic elections. It was a competition I think. And afterwards, the name was simply maintained.

I must say @Martha i didn’t realize you knew so much about social studies. Interesting how North and South Korea hate each other so much, It’d be great to see them as Korea once again.

Having them united as a big Korea would cause an economic crisis far larger than the East/West German unification.
