“Fiscal year” doesn’t cover the same time period as “Academic year” and neither of them go along with “calendar year”. Stupid. Who came up with this zany system anyway? I want to time travel and thump them on the head.
Wouldn’t you also want to fix this “year” problem before it was created?

Here’s something that pisses me off, the metric system. It wouldn’t bother me that much, but it seems like the US is slowly replacing it’s imperial system with it, as stuff such as science, medicine, and soda bottles feel like using it. I say that we stop dumbing down our kids to use anti-American stupid simplified units and we get the whole world to use the imperial system.

As an American myself, I feel the exact opposite. I hope this transition to metrics becomes 100%, although it will take lots of time. The metrics system is a tone easier to work with, and will cause less human error with conversion.

That’s the problem though, I like a bit of variety and challenge in my units instead of something that is measured in 10’s. I think it helps your mind to know that there 16 ounces in a pound, 2,000 pounds in a ton, 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet in a yard, and 1,760 yards in a mile. We don’t want a system that someone like this guy can master, now do we.

Before switch to metric, get UK to drive on the right side of road. Compromise.

Could be hard when you live in the U.S. to not use the US system.

I usually don’t respond to dumb peeves, but I have to say this one really irked me. Just so you know, I’m American, and I couldn’t disagree more.
1. It’s not dumbing down, it’s going for more accuracy. Simplicity is not a bad thing. The Imperial system is outdated and unnecessarily abstruse.
2. The Imperial system has nothing to do with your misguided sense of ‘patriotism’.
3. Why the hell would the whole world want to use our system? This one really bothered me. The statement sounds utterly self-centered, inconsiderate, and frankly childish. Unless you were just being facetious.

And that’s your ego talking again, I think. I don’t understand why you seem to feel simplicity is such a terrible thing.

My big pet peeve of the day is how English teachers take good books and make them the bane of a students’ existences by adding supplementary assignments that have to be done while reading the book, thus preventing the student from just reading and enjoying the book.

That’d play havoc with our cars, all of them have the steering wheels on the right side so you can see properly. Also buses’ doors would have to be on the opposite side as well to stop people stepping off into the road and getting themselves killed.
So if all the right-sided countries want to replace the UK, Ireland’s, Cyprus’, Bahamas’, Saint Kitts and Nevis’, Maldives’, Australia’s, New Zealand’s, Tonga’s, Kenya’s, Swaziland’s, South Africa’s, Japan’s, Bangladesh’s, India’s, Hong Kong’s, Thailand’s and many, many other countries’ fleet of cars and buses, then feel free to. We’ll happily switch over then 🙂

Well that would be the kinda chaos we’d have to deal with if we switched to metric.

While we’re on the metric/imperial subject, let me bring up a semi-related minor peeve.
It bugs me a bit when, in an uber-public setting, people give a metric measurement without giving the imperial equivalent. Likewise, when people give an imperial measurement without giving the metric equivalent. I know, only three countries on earth still use imperial, but we’re still talking hundreds of millions of people who use imperial. Whether or not those countries should switch is beside the point. The average person has no control over that. In this day and age, you can do the conversion in a matter of seconds by searching “[X] miles to km” on Google.
As a general rule, I include both as a matter of courtesy.

If your time machine travels in calendar years, but they observe fiscal or academic years, you may never find them.
But then again, you can do the conversions given your prowess over all things mathematical.
