Honestly, I don’t mind trends all that much in general. When this thread was started, my first thought was “the original poster intentionally named some of the more stupid ones.” Once time passes, the stupider ones will fade away, but only time passing can dictate what sticks and what doesn’t. For example, every decade in history has good music and crappy music, but we’re posting on a Beatles forum for a reason. The Beatles made good enough music to still be listened to fifty years later. There was much crap music made in the 1960’s, but few still care about it, and so we aren’t posting about it. The key is to sort out what’s good and what’s just plain stupid (sorry about the redundant use of the same words).
Yeah, sorry about the rant. Something about this thread just brings out the devil’s advocate in me.

Their songs aren’t all that bad compared to some of the stuff around today. I like the stuff best off their third album Midnight Memories. They do have some writing credit on some of their songs like Story of My Life. I don’t think they deserve a lot of the hate they get. They are a lot better then their predecessor Justin Bieber.
I had a hard time understanding the lyrics to Justin Bieber’s first song (heard it on radio at first so didnt know the singer) because he sounded like a girl.

Hey while we’re at it, what do you guys think of how One Direction (listened to 2-3 songs, didnt follow) has a very teenagish appeal while Beatles -who had more teenage, female fan following- didnt let it overwhelm them. Yes, they enjoyed the shouts which popularized their music but as they progressed they wanted their music to be understood from an artistic perspective…which is what I find lacking in todays teenage bands/ singers. Also they are very annoying.
I really have only heard two or three of their songs. It’s not the kind of music that I would listen to, but I can’t honestly say that I hate them. I don’t really care enough about them to hate them. Same with Justin Bieber, except that I’ve heard even fewer of his songs.

I did, however, get pissed off when One Direction fans decided to bash The Who.

I know a few of you guys are fans on modern pop. I am constantly just being a die-hard because I hate modern music for what it’s become and the bubble these kids are living in. Nobody has talent. Nobody actually plays an instrument. You just tap a few things on a computer and you’re done! No one can sing. You hear these artists in real life and it sounds like crap. You hear the modern digital recording studios and they sound crappy too than the old ones. The music does not sound genuine, it doesn’t sound like somebody actually played that! A lot of these groups are manufactured. They more than likely didn’t know each other at all. Nobody wants to make good albums or good songs. The music industry is dead. Did you see EMI? They call it Every Mistake Imaginable for a reason! They milk out the classic artists for what they are! Bootlegs! Anybody remember Napster? When they fell, hundreds of other sites took their place. Songs these days last 2-3 months and go out of style and nobody remembers them for crap! Anybody remember Rockin’ The Beer Gut by Trailer Choir? It was a one-hit wonder- now they’re doing county fairs! It’s all a total failure! And I’m sorry if anyone gets upset after reading this. But these are the facts and the music industry is a completely screwed up mess for what it is! I’m ****** off! You should be too!
By hook or by crook, I'll be last in this book.

I think, with the direction this thread is going, we’re going to have to agree to disagree, but here’s a new one that I wanted to bring up that I actually do dislike…
Over the past several years now, nobody in the film industry ever has an original idea. All it is are a bunch of sequels, prequels, reboots, remakes, movies based on books, etc. Why don’t they pay their writers to write rather than to rewrite?

This is really more of a pet peeve (so it probably belongs in that thread), I’d say… but I totally agree. Like you said, remakes, rehashes, sequels, prequels, just a bunch of lazy stuff. It bothers me quite a bit every time they announce another “Alice in Wonderland” or “Wizard of Oz.”
And @Starr Shine?, this isn’t meant to be rude, but what modern pop would you call “good”? Or even singers?
If you're lonely (or not!), you can talk to me. .....Hey! Are you a new member on this fine forum and don't know where to go to introduce yourself?

for people who can sing good are Pharrell, Adele, John Legend, Lady Gaga and others.
I like Ke$ha and some of Katy Perry and some Eminem.
Though this is all my opinion.
There is good and bad music yesterday and today.
I try to keep an open mind about music

No offense Anna, but sometimes I really can’t follow you.
As for films, YES! Though I like the fairytale movies. Alice in Wonderland is my favourite fairytale and I quite liked the Tim Burton version. Wouldn’t mind seeing more different versions tbh. Anyway, the other week there were THREE movies on about two people with the complete opposite lifestyles changing bodies. This all happened in a span of two days.

Oh yeah. Back on trends. I don’t really care about trends, I just listen to whatever I like, and I wear whatever I like. It’s good when something is trendy and good at the same time, and it’s brought to my attention, because that’s another way of discovering great things. I hate it when something gets really overplayed though. Take that Gotye song for instance. Not a single day went by without hearing that song at least twice in, what was it, 2012? In the beginning I loved it, but after a few weeks I wanted to smash my head against the wall everytime it came on. It was ruined for me.
As for taste in music, I honestly feel everyone should just listen to whatever the F they like, and shouldn’t be ashamed. Yes I know, I’ve called 1D stupid too, but that’s different from insulting their fans. There’s no need to be a douchebag to each other. I don’t think that, for example, 1D fans in general are stupid. I just think some people are idiots. It’s just that a lot of them happen to be fans of stupid autotuned twatty artists/bands

There is a certain kind of person who is repulsed by trends (and I am totally one of them)
I am actually a little extreme with my antitrendism
like my new word there?
when something is popular, especially in terms artists/bands, I am overlly cynical about it to begin with. It seems like a lot of Beatles fans share this quality. (I’m generalizing here) Part of the allure of the Beatles is that they are both so popular everyone has at least heard of them, but not popular in the way you can’t count on people knowing all of their names. They’re popular in an iconic way
they are bigger than Jesus after all
Anyway, my point is some people just repel trends, purely because its a trend, whereas other people embrace trends for social reasons.

When I was around 12, and all the girls in my class started wearing make up, I went automatically went the other direction, and still don’t wear it, even now I’m in high school, and it’s something that everyone just does.like my new word there?

but in many ways not as popular as 1D is, if you get what I’m trying to say. And that makes being a Beatles fan much cooler than a 1D fan, and not just because 1D is total bullshit. Artistic merit of the music aside, being a Beatles fan has so much more identity to it than being a fan of any band that is currently a trend. Obviously, the feeling of identity and originality is not the reason we are Beatles fans, its just an added bonus.they are bigger than Jesus after all
