I think this is quite a controversial topic but ever since I’ve gotten into The Beatles, and known about their legacy and how they’re still extremely popular today, more than 40 years after they split up, I have been enraged with all of these trends that have been coming about. Here are a few examples:
Gangnam Style
Pop bands such as One Direction, The Wanted, 5 Seconds of Summer
The Fox Song
The Harlem Shake
Flappy Bird
Let me take a selfie(or whatever that song is called)
Planking
I mean, what is the point? What is the point in getting into something that you won’t even care for in a month? I know that it’s hard for simple things like those nowadays to obtain the legacy that The Beatles made but seriously!? 1 month? 1!
Sorry, mini rant over xD
So, what do you guys think about trends, that people go crazy for, for a short period of time? Do you like them? Do you hate them?
(I must add, the funny thing is The Beatles thought they were going to be a trend at one point and lose their popularity soon, obviously not as quickly as trends nowadays though)
Favourite band: The Beatles
Favourite song: Yesterday
Favourite album: Rubber Soul
Favourite member: Paul McCartney

I think you are talking about #selfie
That song reminds me of the 80’s song about valley girls

I watched the “Gangnam Style” video a few times about a year ago, having previously only heard of it, and prepared to hate it. To my surprise, I thought it had some very cool synthesizer hooks and “drops”. And the dance was kind of unique. So, that has my semi-sheepish, semi-bemused approval! (Can’t remember the title of Psy’s followup, but I thought it was almost as good.)
About all the other stuff you mentioned…sorry, can’t tell you. Most of it I’ve never even heard of until just now (I don’t listen to pop radio or watch popular youtubes), and the remainder I’ve heard of but never heard/seen/encountered at all. Consider me lucky if you wish!
Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

That has to be some of the most chaotic choreography I’ve ever seen. Even funnier since she just stood there like a stick.

That song Anna posted is appalling, dear me.
Never paid attention to trends as i dont care what the next bit of stupidity people are getting in to is, if anything i go against the trend out of stubornness.
Gangham Style was utterly s***e as is everything else listed above in the first point. How folk get pent up and post death threats over such a s**t game as Flappy Bird only proves the point that people are idiots.

I keep up on some pop culture since I am going into entertainment
Gangnam Style
I watch this a few times and it did not age well for me I kinda find it sad that it made it to Billbords 2013 best songs of the year even though it is from 2012
Pop bands such as One Direction, The Wanted, 5 Seconds of Summer
The only one I herd any music from is One Direction. and there not the worst thing in the world
The Fox Song/The Harlem Shake
For me theise two songs are confusing and I prefer the later
Let me take a selfie(or whatever that song is called)
That #selfie song is not even a song and I think the people who made that know it. It is just a reboot of the Vally girl song
Planking
I think planking has passed or on its death bed as a fad

1. Gangnam Style – stupid.
2. Pop bands – The only one of those I’ve even heard of is One Direction, and I think I’ve only heard one or two of their songs.
3. The Fox Song – If you’re talking about what I think you’re talking about, I’ve heard of it, but I’ve never heard it.
4. The Harlem Shake – See #3 (minus the “if you’re talking about what I think you’re talking about” part)
5. Flappy Bird – similar to the last two, except that it’s not music.
6. Let me take a selfie – Never heard of it. I HATE the term ‘selfie,’ though, because it belongs to teenage girls, and stupid ones at that.
7. Planking – stupid.
Overall, I don’t mind trends, it’s just that the ones you listed are ones that I don’t care about or I dislike. I like some.
I'm Necko. I'm like Ringo except I wear necklaces.

1. Gangnam Style – Didn’t like it at first, but it grew on me and I like it in an odd joke sort of way, I agree with VB that there are some good hooks.
2. Pop bands – Like Necko and Anna the only one I’ve ever heard of is One Direction, and I haven’t heard much, but I’m not a fan of new music so my vote is no.
3. The Fox Song – Stupid, utterly stupid, I think it was a joke video though, so it had its intended purpose, and surprisingly that song actually sold so those lucky people made some money off that crap.
4. The Harlem Shake – Watched a few videos, funny at first, got old fast.
5. Flappy Bird – Have it, have played it, don’t really enjoy it. That fad lasted only about a week.
6. Let me take a selfie – Hadn’t heard of it until right now, and just watched the video Anna posted…. WHYY??! I’d take P.S. Love Me Do over that any day. It was SOOO bad, I don’t care whether or not it was a joke, too horrible for that to matter. I also hate hashtags and the term selfie. And that wasn’t music!!!!! The valley girl song was at least pretty funny.
7. Planking – To echo Necko: stupid.

Although I don’t like most trends, I have to say that I admire the way people can still think of things that would make them popular and rich.
I absolutely despise Gangnam Style. I’ve given it tons of chances. My sister messed around with the dance to make me laugh, my five year old cousin as well, but no. Just no. And The Fox Song – I bleed inwardly every time I hear it.
The Harlem Shake wan fun for like the first 30 seconds. Literally.
The same goes to the pop music nowadays: I’ve listened to enough songs enough times for them to grow on me, but they haven’t. I have a hard time introducing myself to new music as it is anyway. What do people actually like in today’s pop?
But #Selfie, man, it’s made my life better. The hours my friends and I have spent mocking and laughing at various selfies and people who’ve taken them.. yes, those hours have prolonged my life. In reality, I’ve heard only 40 seconds of the song, but that was enough for me to conclude that it describes the world right now perfectly. The song itself is a genius way to make money on the cost of today’s stupidity.

I’m all for experimentation. Hell, it was going to happen with Yesterday .

Actually that’s kind of an annoyance with me. I’ve got no problem with electronic music, but I don’t like electric music that tries to call itself rock. Use actual instruments people!

They ARE actual instruments! But I know what you mean. What I hate is everybody using the exact same presets. Experiment with NEW tones! (And try using actual handclaps instead of those stupid fake ones.) (And enough with the goddamn autotune already for chrissakes!!)

Personally, I have zero problem with electronic music PROVIDED that the person making it actually has some musical knowledge and talent.
I see a lot of rockist arguments that electronic music isn’t real music, but I disagree. I’ve made plenty of electronic music, but I also know how to play more than one physical instrument. These people tend to exaggerate how easy it is to make that kind of music. It’s not like you press a button and a computer writes the music for you.
One of the great things about writing music on a computer is that you can get a wide variety of sounds that would be too difficult, too expensive, etc. to get by bringing in a ton of musicians. Say, for example, I wanted a cello in my music. Not knowing how to play one and not owning one, but knowing how to play a keyboard, I can get a cello sound. I could, if I wanted, have as many instrumental sounds to use as Pet Sounds-era Brian Wilson.
If the person making the electronic music has zero musical knowledge or talent, generally speaking, it will be clearly audible in the music, at least to an actual musician. Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) said it best when he said “I use [technology] for things that have never been done before. I use it as an instrument, but not as a crutch.”
Reading about how much John Lennon enjoyed playing with his Mellotron when it was a relatively new invention, I think that he would be impressed with all the ways that technology can be used in music today, if he were alive.
I need to stop writing persuasive essays in my posts.
