Strange isn’t it, the whole going to see someone in concert. @Bongo was disappointed Neil Young didnt play more of his hits yet many people (including myself) are irked that Paul plays mostly his hits (Beatles/solo/Wings) and not more of the deeper cuts (see the reaction to ‘Temporary Secretary ‘). Shows what predicament such stars are in.Ya, I love that McCartney actually played “Mrs. Vanderbilt” at the last concert I saw of his in Montreal. Talk about a deep cut. That was awesome. Unfortunately Neil Young’s deep cuts just aren’t (in my opinion) nowhere as good as Macca’s.
Sorry, I don’t have a lot of sympathy for anyone who wants Neil to be a walking jukebox of ‘hits’ when he is on tour. He is still putting out plenty of interesting original albums and takes them on the road – that’s what living breathing vital artists, rather than museum relics, do. Seeing him for your ‘bucket list’ just so you can tick him off it; well – you did that – did it really matter what he played? Now at least you have a nice story to tell folks about having seen him and X and Y live. He also pretty much sticks to a set list through a tour so you could easily have looked up what he was likely to play unless it was one of the first few concerts of the tour.
I heard this complaint on the tour I saw him on -> yet of the 15 songs he performed 5 were pretty well known (stuff like Cinnamon Girl, Powderfinger and Heart of Gold) and another 4 were over 20 years old; with 4 off his latest album and 2 totally new songs he was trying out. Sounds like a decent mix to me.

Well, it makes sense that if someone knows mostly the hits, then that’s what they’d want to hear. Neil Young’s got a lot of fanatical followers who see him often, so they’re the ones who would appreciate deep cuts more.I like Neil, got maybe a dozen of his albums, but am not part of the cult that worships everything he’s done. Sometimes I get the impression that he gets praise for being careless/sloppy/lazy/whatever, and his defenders will justify it with something like “Only Neil Young can get away with doing something like that!” And I just think “Well, he can if you say he can. Or can he?”
Anyways, yeah, one single album is not enough to judge him by. Unless it’s that “Decade” collection, maybe.
I’m not sure I like the idea of being considered a cultist just because I find all of his work interesting. I find people often criticize the albums they don’t like by calling them lazy when it is often really just an album they don’t like. It seems to me that many of the ‘sloppy’ albums are just Neil trying something new and he hasn’t quite got it down pat yet; I find a lot of these new directions really interesting. After all; 33 variations of Harvest would have driven everyone crazy by now.

You’re not cultist………You’re a fan. You don’t have to defend yourself.
…….. None of us would be on here, if we weren’t fans too.
I found it hard to admit to being a fan…….I considered myself ‘an interested …..supporter’. I had the Beatles monthly delivered because I was too shy to go in the shop and buy one………Fans screamed at them and left the seats soaked in urine. I’ve never screamed at anyone.
After a while the artists that we are fans of become part of our lives and almost family…….I’ve learnt recently It’s unkind and unwise to attack someone else’s ‘family’…….
We don’t all have to be fans of the same people……….even within one group we all take sides.
Peace and Luv!!……Let’s all remember we are individuals

More Paul and Neil
I love Neil’s distinct voice, but it has to be damned hard to harmonize with. Macca tried throughout and finally succeeded at about 2:32 in. Stunning. Thanks for sharing that vid, mmm.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.
