The Grateful Dead are the first band that comes to mind.
And the rolling stones. I don’t dislike the stones at all, but people tend to think about them as being in the same league as the Beatles, and that really annoys me. They’re song writing and singing just doesn’t compare in any way. The stones a good band but they aren’t nearly as important or influental as the Beatles. There is just no comparison, so I think they are overrated in that regard.
Bob dylan is also overrated in my opinion. I just really don’t like his voice or his playing. Yes, he has great lyrics, but as a musician, that’s not enough to make me a fan.

I just dont get Jimi Hendrix. Every time i’ve heard him my reaction is “and?”.
Agree. Everyone’s just like ”oh his playing is so wonderful and amazing” and I’m just like ”when?”, because it does nothing for me. He had a few decent tunes, but still, they don’t strike me as amazing.

There was all that “WOW” with his cover of Pepper, so soon after its release, in the Anthology. I guess that it was more the occasion and meaning than the actual cover as it was pretty poor.

I live in a suburb of Seattle, Washington. Our house is about a mile or so from where the old “Spanish Castle” dancehall used to be. That is where Jimi Hendrix got his start as a guitar player. He mentions the “Spanish Castle” several times in his song lyrics. The Spanish Castle is gone now, and there is a gas station/mini mart on that spot. I drive right by there coming home from work in the wee hours of the morning. Sometimes, I roll the car window down, and I believe I can faintly hear the ghost of Jimi playing his guitar.*
*OK, so that part I just made up. When I roll the car window down there, I mostly hear the planes taking off overhead from the nearby Seatac airport. So it sounds like the beginning and ending of “Back In The USSR .” And even though Jimi Hendrix is a native son of Seattle, and there is a museum dedicated to him at Seattle Center, the EMP (Experience Music Project), and I also live pretty close to his gravesite, I never really “got” him as a superstar. I think he’s got some good songs, but a rock god? I never thought so.

So many of my heroes trashed in this thread…Y’know who’s REALLY overrated? Those “Beatles”! (There, how do you like it?)
I’m not “trashing” Jimi Hendrix. It’s just that the “transcendence” that supposedly takes place when you listen to his music… well, I never experienced it. He was an innovative guitar player, and like I said, he had some good songs. But I feel the same way about Eric Clapton. Whoever spray-painted “Clapton is god”… I think that person was a poor speller, and meant to spray-paint “Clapton is good.”

In all seriousness, I do think The Beatles are overrated. Well, “overrated” might not be the right word for it, especially since they’re my favourite band by a mile. But honestly, before I was into them, I’d just say they were my favourite because they were so popular – I think a lot of people, namely hipsters, just say The Beatles are their favourite band just to be part of the crowd when they haven’t even heard any Beatles songs. Hell, being a Beatles fan is fine, but there’s a lot of people shunning the actual fans for “being a part of the crowd” and saying they’re no different to, say, One Direction.

I totally agree. Everyone says the Beatles are great, maybe 25% of those could sing you Strawberry Fields Forever and maybe 2% could sing you Love You To .

I agree with you. The Beatles are overrated by people who don’t understand them, but “like” them because they’re so famous. Anyone who is a real fan is probably not overrating them, but you can’t say a band is good or bad without actually knowing their music.
