I despise the Eagles generally (as stated years ago in this thread), but do enjoy a few songs. “Hotel Cali”, the track, is very good, but way-overexposed. “New Kid in Town” and “I Can’t Tell You Why” are pretty good too.

I could probably assemble myself a listenable collection of 10-15 assorted tracks, if I gave a second binge-listening to their entire chronological discography (again, see elsewhere in the thread.)

I’m not gonna do that. a-hard-days-night-john-1

Wow, relax, yes, Eagles is kind of an overrated group but why do you DESPISE them? What have they done to you? It’s not like their material is completely hate-able. They did some decent songs and never anything outside the box, but there are a lot of bands to “despise” and this is not one of those.

Well, if Don and Glenn weren’t such humourless jerks, and if so much of their catalog wasn’t sour misogyny, and if Henley were a good drummer, and if their music didn’t sell a zillion copies and get massively overplayed, and if they hadn’t written & recorded “Get Over It”, then I might be more inclined to say “yeah they’re alright, pleasant melodies and touches of country, nice”, then I’d be happy to settle for indifference. But if they make people happy, fine, good for them.

On the other hand, Journey of the Sorcerer is a genuinely interesting and weird instrumental. If it wasn’t for Douglas Adams though, I’d never have heard it. Eagles are way too much West Coast and FM Radio overplay for me. Into the bin!

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

That’s Bernie Leadon’s baby. Vonbontee is right. Henley and Frey are humourless jerks. They made a three plus hour documentary dedicated to the fact they’re complete a**holes. It’s painful, yet fascinating to watch. Incidentally I do want to mention that Henley’s solo album Building the Perfect Beast is equal to any of the Eagles releases but it’s so awash in 80s production that it’s nearly impossible to listen to.

One last thing. I live in the Detroit area. After Glenn Frey died he was annointed to almost saint-hood here. I couldn’t believe it. I truly hope the same thing doesn’t happen with Ted Nugent another love/hate personage for me.

I don’t think Led Zeppelin themselves are overrated, but I think IV is overrated. Maybe it’s just overexposure of the first half.

Totally agree…love the Amboy Dukes and much of Terrible Ted’s old solo work, but he’s turned into such a teabagger lunatic.

Did Detroit give Knack frontman Doug Fieger any love when he died?? (His brother still shows up on Detroit TV ads representing his own law firm…)

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

Same, RHCP are one of my least favourite musical artists ever. Something about them is just so uncomfortable to me, as people they’re a bunch of creeps but it’s rare that such a quality seeps through into the music so thoroughly as well.

Flea is a great bassist with no originality whatsoever. Chad Smith and John Frusciante are both great players What brings them down is Anthony Kiedis. He’s written maybe three or five classic songs over the space of a career, has no vocal presence whatsoever and just plain overall sucks.

He’s almost singlehandedly damaged California Cool, perhaps permanently

Back almost thirty years ago when they started he was still the weak link even though Hilly was no great shakes as a guitar. There was a lot of college radio kids in this area that loved them.

Blood Sugar Sex Magic and Stadium Arcadium are their best albums, and it’s entirely because of Frusciante and Flea. Frusciante is one of the premiere guitarists of the nineties and Anthony Kiedis is an annoying douche. (now that I say that, reminds me a bit of how I feel about Johnny Greenwood and Thom Yorke) Every once in a while he’s tolerable, but i’ve heard better vocal renditions of Under The Bridge at 3 am in a bar.

Completely different type of douche but OK. A much better comparison for Kiedis is the Gallagher brothers.

I like some of their earliest material (they even got George Clinton to produce ’em)

Let me guess. You were college age, right? My theory is they had cocaine. A lot of it. Very potent stuff.  LOL

I mean I’ve heard Black Dog and Stairway to Heaven enough so that by now it can be a little bit tiring, so I kinda get you.

But bro.

Just look at the tracklist. Probably one of the tightest hard rock albums ever made. Surely my top Zeppelin songs are actually on Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti, but IV to me is the only Zeppelin album that doesn’t have a bad/mediocre song (II is a close second). Is there any song on that album to you that is mediocre/feels like filler? Even if some of the songs were or are overplayed, it is not without reason. Every track is at least a 7/10.

So maybe you have a point,

but I have to disagree,

it is an S tier record.

Dylan

Can you elaborate?

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.
