Their 70’s stuff, on CBS, is rightly praised. They were considered America’s Stones, and indeed the final 70% of their career has likewise been retreads and self-parody with a few contemporary sound updates and 9-figure deals, but I’ll always be fond of their best stuff – hard rock that’s witty and gritty and danceable

Aerosmith have released a lot of terrible material since they reunited in the mid 80s, but a number of their earlier albums are excellent, notably Toys In The Attic, Rocks, and Draw The Line. Their song Kings And Queens from the latter is fantastic.

I’m not a big supporter of that one, but it’s very unique that they’d try an English style proggish track.
I mostly think of KAQ as “b-side of Come Together single I bought in 1981 or 79 or whenever it was”

A lot of people love their Come Together cover but I’m not too keen. I prefer their Helter Skelter cover.

If you go solely by the songs and you’re liking them or not then there is an argument for the Beatles being overrated, as there is for any artist(s). When you begin taking into account what the Beatles achieved in popular culture, not only in the UK but in the US and a whole load of other countries, the statement becomes ludicrous.I’ve said before that considering what the Beatles achieved and where music, never mind everything else, went because of them, and I think there is a cause for them being underrated. Seriously. Start a list of what they did and the knock on effects and see where it leads you and you will be amazed, and damn tired – and i’m not just talking about the songs and albums they released.
When I mentioned The Beatles it was in general. I think in the scope of popular music The Beatles could be considered overrated and I can understand people’s reasoning for this. I would never take away their achievements for what they did for music and pop culture.

When i said that i meant that according to the dictionary definition something can’t be overrated if it deserves to be, i know that some people may think that The Beatles are overrated, i even know people who hate their music but if you think that something deserves to be overrated then you are contradicting the definition of overrated.
I was speaking generally when I mentioned The Beatles. I will explain what I mean when I say that they deserve to be overrated but I won’t use The Beatles as an example. Take The Black Album by Metallica. It gets a lot of praise and is still one of the most successful albums of all time but a lot of people also say that the album is overrated and isn’t as good as what people say it is but I think it’s a very good album and it deserves to be overrated in that sense.
It might be wrong and it might be a contradiction but that is what I meant by it.

Beach Boys . Don’t get me wrong. Brian Wilson is a genius, for sure, and he has penned some of the best ever pop singles. But all that “holy cow” or “holy grail” thing around them and the constant (and ridiculous) overall comparison with the Beatles. No way. It has become like a sort of cult, mainly btw americans, and that’s no surprise.
Other major examples: Pearl Jam, Oasis, Guns N Roses.
U2 and Dylan are a bit overrated, too.

Oasis aren’t overrated. The popular consensus is that they were life changing, and then terrible. The first two albums do deserve a lot of praise though – songs like Live Forever, Rock N Roll Star and Champagne Supernova are very good.

Quite a few of my friends consider The Beatles to be overrated. One used a picture comparing the lyrics to The Beatles ‘worst’ lyric (Birthday ) compared to Kanye West’s best (No idea what it was). I then compared The Beatles ‘best’ lyric (forgot what I used) to Kanye West’s ‘worst’ (also forgot this one). So it’s all relative, and we will never get to a conclusion, as literally everyone will have different opinion.
Oddly I had a similar argument with someone comparing the Beatles to Kanye and while I will say Kanye has done some good stuff the mere comparison is ridiculous. But the other person got upset and shouty because he felt I was dismissing anyone else’s ability to do something new or be influential which isn’t what I meant at all. People don’t react well when told the Beatles made [insert pet band here] possible, but it doesn’t mean they aren’t great in their own right, just acknowledge the influence. It won’t be the only influence but it’s there.
Here’s an overrated band: The Pixies. Actually they were game changers, as David Bowie said: like the Velvet Underground, they didn’t sell a lot of records but those who bought them started a lot of bands. I think he called them the ‘psychotic Beatles’ too. More influential than Kanye, hows that for overrated.

I’ve got a ‘Kanye Friend.’ I’m honestly a fan of his music, but when I hear someone say Kanye’s producing is more influential than GM’s….

Oasis are an interesting case because I think it’s fairly easy to make an argument that they are overrated in the UK. So many people in the UK think they’re the greatest thing to ever happen to music (take the NME for example…) and it’s just silly. Yes some of their work was decent, but I don’t think they’re necessarily better or more influential then other bands of the same era like Blur or Pulp etc.
I feel much the same way about the Arctic Monkeys – people rave about them far too much.

I think Oasis are not overrated , they are just The Great Rock ‘N’ Roll Swindle!
Their first album was great. Then they really believed they were The Beatles and everything went downhill from then on.

I had the impression the froth over those bands had more to do with music critics getting older and trying to sell Britpop in opposition to American Grunge than the value of the bands themselves. Certainly Blur and Pulp seemed more inventive than Oasis and those ridiculous Monkeys in my book, but they were still overhyped.

All I know about the band Blur is that one terrible song they have. I can’t understand any of the words besides “woo-hoo!”
I heard it a million times in the Madden 11 soundtrack.

About Blur i’d recommend you starting by listening to their second album “modern Life is rubbish” and then listen to their next one “Parklife” where they reached their peak (imo), i lost interest after “The great scape”… i, once, read Damon commenting that they were trying to sound like Pavement in Song 2… they failed, obviously.

I like ‘Song 2’, not that dissimilar to Paul’s ‘Mumbo’ in regards to not having a clue what on earth is being sung.
I keep meaning to get around to listening to more of Blur, and at some point, I will.
I love ‘To The End ‘.

The only Blur I know is Parklife and The Great Escape but find these albums quite cool, they’ve both got great moments. My favourite track is probably Charmless Man, the asymmetrical intro is awesome!
I find it sad how many people either claim Oasis and partly also Blur and other ‘Britpop’ bands to be the gods of music or make a condescending grimace when they only hear their names and say in a snobby I-only-listen-to-sophisticated-music voice ‘Britpop is a really pointless genre’ in which they pronounce ‘britpop’ while trying very hard to get as much contempt as possible in the word ‘britpop’. I don’t get why one can’t view Oasis and Blur and all the others as great bands with some seriously good music without exaggerating into one direction or the other.
Or maybe I just heard the wrong people talk about it…

I like Song 2. It’s not the best song in the world or anything but it is a fun little two minute song.
I still haven’t listened to Blur’s most recent album. I should really do that soon.
@Martha I have heard people talk about Britpop the same way so you’re not the only one.
