Actually, I didn’t like Ed’s In My Life cover at all, whereas I enjoy most of his music. It’s my favourite song of all time, and I thought he just took away all of the intimacy of it, not because of his singing, but because of the way he played it on guitar. He was palm muting every. single. chord. The chord progression is beautiful, particularly that first A7. Why would you want to stifle that?
Quite right. Dead grotty.

I prefer Dave in Nirvana, as i think that Nirvana is a better band than Foo Fighters and that Dave Grohl is a drummer at heart. I love his drumming on No One Knows by Queens Of The Stone Age by the way. Also, i think that any band that doesn’t use actual drums (whether it be an acoustic or electric kit) completely sucks and is overrated if thought of as good.
I mostly agree with this, although there are a lot of really great bands that don’t use drums at all.

I assume people are posting artists that they don’t think deserve to be overrated?
I say this because surely The Beatles would have to be the most overrated band ever but I think they deserve it.
I personally like Ed Sheeran. He writes good songs in different styles and he seems to have captured the imagination of a lot of people but I will admit that he does get overplayed a lot but that’s only if you choose to be exposed to him that much.
I would say the Foo Fighters are probably overrated but they have had a lot of hit singles and it would have to be fair to say that they are the biggest rock band of the last twenty years.
And in the end the lunch you take is equal to the lunch you bake.

How can a great band like The Beatles be overrated if the definition of overrate is to have a higher opinion of something or someone than is deserved. A band can’t deserve to be overrated because they can only be overrated if they don’t deserve it.

They can perfectly be overrated since all this overrated thing is nothing else than a subjective opinion, so same way Queen is, to me, a highly overrated band they are not overrated at all for you.
Same with the beatles.

Quite a few of my friends consider The Beatles to be overrated.
One used a picture comparing the lyrics to The Beatles ‘worst’ lyric (Birthday ) compared to Kanye West’s best (No idea what it was). I then compared The Beatles ‘best’ lyric (forgot what I used) to Kanye West’s ‘worst’ (also forgot this one). So it’s all relative, and we will never get to a conclusion, as literally everyone will have different opinion.

Even then it’s subjective because the lyrics to Birthday are intentionally silly. It’s similar to when people say the lyrics to I Am The Walrus are stupid, which i’ve heard before.

A lot of people say that, but when you press them for reasons why they think the Beatles are overrated, it becomes clear they don’t know the first thing about the band and have usually only heard Hey Jude and I Want To Hold Your Hand .

When i said that i meant that according to the dictionary definition something can’t be overrated if it deserves to be, i know that some people may think that The Beatles are overrated, i even know people who hate their music but if you think that something deserves to be overrated then you are contradicting the definition of overrated.

If you go solely by the songs and you’re liking them or not then there is an argument for the Beatles being overrated, as there is for any artist(s). When you begin taking into account what the Beatles achieved in popular culture, not only in the UK but in the US and a whole load of other countries, the statement becomes ludicrous.
I’ve said before that considering what the Beatles achieved and where music, never mind everything else, went because of them, and I think there is a cause for them being underrated. Seriously. Start a list of what they did and the knock on effects and see where it leads you and you will be amazed, and damn tired – and i’m not just talking about the songs and albums they released.

Kind of on topic: I heard somewhere that none other than John Lennon invented the phrase ‘flanging’ in music production. Is this true? If so, that makes him a very important guy.

Then i guess this whole thread is contradicting continuously the overrated definition.

Just cause something is ment to be silly doesn’t make it good.
I Am The Walrus is not a great song.

True but the opposite is also true. I’ve heard people dismiss ‘IATW’ purely on the lyrics making no sense when the lyrics were never meant to make sense.
It’s the same kind of argument as dismissing ‘Revolution 9 ‘ because it’s not a good song when it was never a song in the first place.

This is basicially what I was insinuating, I’ve heard people say the same thing and it’s pretty frustrating.
I agree, Revolution 9 is misinterpreted in a similar way.
Back on topic, i’m struggling to think of other overrated bands. I’m thinking maybe Aerosmith, but do people rate them that highly anyway?
