It was in response to your (unfounded) criticism of Pink Floyd
I wouldn’t say it’s unfounded since it did have a base and they explained why they didn’t like Pink Floyd.
Not everything is about melody and harmony, you know,
Or anything really. Music can be whatever though some people prefer different things. For example, outside of Petula Clark big singles, I don’t like her stuff that I checked out. This whole thing is opinion based.
but saying they’re no good because they aren’t as melodic as some bands is just flat-out wrong.
Good is subjective call based on ones own point of view. I don’t think the song Good Morning Good Morning is any good but others may find it fantastic. Their dislike of Pink Floyd isn’t wrong it’s different.
Beautiful melodies and harmonies in music is *everything* and this was one of the big things that made me a big Beatles fan since I was little, and if music doesn’t have any it’s cr*p! And I have had the misfortune of hearing many Pink Floyd songs on the radio so I’ve heard quite enough thanks but no thanks.

I feel like Queen is a bit overrated when it comes to their hits.

It would have to be The Doors. I had heard so much about them and was so excited to listen but when I heard them I was just confused. They had no bassist, so the music seemed one dimensional and flat. The organ tone was just awful, and the guitar work sounds like a 12 year old in guitar centre trying to play Thunderstruck. The drums weren’t anything to speak of either. The only passable thing was Morrisson’s singing and songwriting, but even that doesn’t have anything on the other frontmen of the time like Robert Plant (vocally anyways).

The Doors’ debut album is good but I think they are overrated in the grand scheme of rock music. I don’t think it helps that their sound is pretty dated now.
Some overrated bands: Queen, AC/DC, KISS, Oasis, U2 (since Achtung Baby), Yes, Rush, Metallica…

hummm… The Beatles?? *wink* *wink*Isn’t every band a bit overrated one way or another?
I agree, in the end ‘overrated’ is just a subjective expression but in this case by saying ‘the band xyz is overrated’ most of us really just want to say ‘It bothers me that band xyz gets so much attention because there are better bands out there … for example the Beatles’ and I think that’s okay as it is another way of exchanging different tastes in music.
And by this definition, the Beatles also can’t be overrated.

This is a difficult one since I think there are certain bands that are definitely not overrated.
Take a band like the Velvet Underground for example. They were incredibly influencial and at the same time the majority of their work was highly acclaimed critically.
I think the influence factor is massive, which is why i’d hesitate to call a band like Nirvana or the Sex Pistols overrated.
The Beatles are overrated if you only know the hits.
Forgot to add them to my list, but I think Foo Fighters are pretty overrated. Critically they don’t have many great albums.

Queen at their best are phenomenal, but for me they don’t really deliver beyond the big hits. I try and listen to albums in full but most of the non singles tend to be not memorable and either boring or bad. Compare that to The Beatles, for whom you can dip into albums at random and find hidden gems you hadn’t even heard of that are as good as or better than the singles.

I’ve never really understood what’s wrong with sounded dated, musicalwise. They sound like a 60s/70’s band, which they were, so what?

Nothing wrong with it strictly but certain songs just age better then others, it doesn’t mean I don’t like them. ‘The End ‘ from their debut album is a good example. It sounds like it was written for hippies to get high to and dance around fires. It’s a categorically excellent album, but it just doesn’t resonate as much these days.
There were plenty of bands from the 60s/70s whose music is less dated imo, such as the Beatles (Help ! onwards), Pink Floyd, Velvet Underground etc.

I quite like The Doors’s sound. The bassless one dimensional sound is always kinda pleasant to listen to. It’s simple and sometimes simple is good. As for the organ tone, I find it quite appealing.

Interesting thoughts on Queen Quarryman, i feel the exact opposite way, i feel that their hits don’t properly represent them and that their best songs are their album tracks like Father To Son and The Prophet’s Song.
Well obviously there are going to be plenty of great album tracks, but as a general rule, they’re a lot worse than the singles. Whereas with the Beatles it’s like they couldn’t have picked any one of the album tracks to be a single and it could have been just as successful. I also don’t think Queen are nearly as creative as people make them out to be either.

Compare it to other rock organists though, such as John Paul Jones on Your Time Is Gonna Come, and it just sounds boring. They’re not that bad, just an extremely overrated band and I think it’s an outrage that they achieved success when The Velvet Underground didn’t.
