Houses Of The Holy is my favorite album. Nowadays the ending to The Ocean really does the job for me.

I really enjoyed both those albums when I listened to them. I finished my Zeppathon two days ago, so I suppose after Peppering myself to bits today, it’ll be time to ‘Get The Led Out — Round Two’. a-hard-days-night-ringo-10

I agree with you that the first two albums are not that great. They do have some good songs on them.

In Through The Out Door is where it starts to fall apart, mainly due to Page’s heroin addiction.

Coda is unnecessary unless you are a completist.

Of note, Robert Plant is a huge Elvis fan…Zeppelin do a few Elvis covers and Plant even mentions Elvis from the stage during some of the live recordings.

I think the first two are the best behind Houses Of The Holy. Good Times Bad Times rivals I Saw Her Standing There as a career album opener. Plus Zep II has Heartbreaker>Living Loving Maid, which is my favorite piece of Led Zeppelin music.

Yeah, the whole band were really steeped in rock & blues history.

Physical Graffiti is a lot of people’s favourite, since it’s one of those big sprawling double albums. Also, about 1/3 of it is outtakes from the previous five years which really were good enough to appear on the previous three albums but were rejected for purposes of time.

Presence is a lot of people’s least favourite, yet one I’ve called my favourite many times (when I haven’t called one of the others my favourite) It’s their most single-minded, written & recorded during a stressful single month, no keyboards, virtually no acoustic guitar, LOTS of drums.

No keyboards, no acoustic guitar, I like my albums to have diversity in their genres, I like Led Zeppelin because they’re a hard rock band that uses acoustic guitars and pianos and various instruments, it’s ok sometimes to use just electric guitar, bass and drums, but it gets tiresome after awhile, this is why I don’t recommend listening to AC/DC’s albums, it’s all the same.

I wonder, do any of you guys consider Led Zeppelin heavy metal. I personally think of them as hard rock.

I’ve always considered them to be a Hard rock/blues rock band, however they have a lot of folky tracks as well of course.

With that being said, a few of their songs are pretty close to being Heavy Metal, i.e. Communication Breakdown, Dazed and Confused and Immigrant Song. There are a few others as well.

Well, there is a rhythm acoustic in “Candy Store Rock”, but it’s pretty low in the mix. Also a really nice harmonica solo (“Nobody’s Fault But Mine”) amplified such that it fooled me into thinking it was a guitar back when I was 13.

Oh, and can’t forget the congas on “Royal Orleans”!

(And no, I don’t think of Zeppelin as metal per se, although maybe 20% of their total output might fit the category. The trouble is that the definition of heavy metal has changed since it first appeared back around 1971 or so; at that time Zep were certainly one of the limited number of groups in existence that fit the still-roughly defined category. On the other hand, I still can’t precisely pinpoint the grey area between metal and hard rock.)

Only 1 song with an acoustic guitar, oh well.

ANyways, I do agree that thimes have changed. If this were 1971, I bet everyone would be referring to Led Zeppelin as heavy metal. One thing’s for sure, Black Sabbath are definitely heavy metal, at least to me they are.

Overall, I consider them hard blues rock, but like all the most interesting (in my opinion) bands, they can’t be neatly pinned into just one genre. ‘Achilles Last Stand’ had what I thought were some very metal-style drum breaks. Then again, I haven’t listened to much metal at all, just a bit of Dream Theater that my friend was plying me with.

There is more than one song with acoustic, but the lineup mainly worked with Electric Guitar, Bass, Drums and vocals, however John Paul Jones played keys sometimes as well.

Ooh, I sure love it when this thread is active! a-hard-days-night-george-9heart

I agree with SG, Achilles Last Stand is really quite heavy.*

I too love the harmonica solo on Nobody`s Fault But Mine; I can see how you thought it was a guitar! When I first heard Gallows Pole, I thought that Robert`s ”AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH YEAH” at the end was part of Jimmy`s electric playing! I thought that was really incredible, it had me fooled.

I don’t consider Led Zeppelin heavy metal.

If Zeppelin were heavy metal, so were the Small Faces.

I’d say Black Sabbath were the first metal band…
