I hate this music (mainly consisting of loops and sound effects). There is little effort in it and I’d rather listen to a toilet flush, but my 7-year old son loves this (and rap and modern pop for that matter, but that’s for another story). Point is do you consider it music or not. I personally think of it as this:

Proper music is anything that has effort put into the singing and the instruments themselves. Classic examples (pre 90’s) include The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys , AC/DC, Queen, Led Zeppelin, and Elton John, whereas modern examples (90’s onwards) include Nirvana, Green Day, Foo Fighters, and Rage Against The Machine. Semi-Proper Music is anything where they put in singing effort, but little to no instrument effort. Examples of this include Katy Perry, Eminem, Adele, N*Sync, and The Backstreet Boys . Anti-music is what I consider Dubstep, something that has little effort if any and comes from somebody who can’t sing or play an instrument. This include Dubstep and anything where they can’t sing and need to use auto tune, such as Lil Wayne. So I consider Dubstep Anti-Music, a subgenre of Avant-Garde gone wrong, what do you think?

Never heard of it.

Googled it.

Found a 30:04 YouTube video of it.

Not enough interest to get through the final 29:34 of the video.

Still don’t know what it is.

Perfect example of “ignorance is bliss”.

Color me blissful.

To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

I have no idea what dubstep is. Before this thread was created I had no idea it existed.

It’s music. Your personal tastes don’t determine what is music. Auto Tune is like the synthesizer of old. Production takes effort just a different kind.

If it doesn’t require any talent to make, I suggest that you test it our yourself by making Dubstep.

@Starr Shine?

Let’s put it this way, what takes more talent, playing the solo to Drive My Car or putting various sound effects over a drum beat loop. I’ve tried it before and it’s so easy, my 7 year old son has actually made a couple of them. Personally, I prefer 60’s Rock, 70’s Rock, and Heavy Metal, but if you like Dubstep (or anything else I just dissed for that matter), go ahead. Also, Autotune is like cheating for singers, imagine if this was around in the 60’s and they used it on “Got To Get You Into My Life ” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”, let’s just say it wouldn’t be nice sounding.

They did edit their voices back then. It’s another tool and not cheating. Is an electric guitar cheating at music. I’m sure that if Autotune was around back then, the Beatles would of checked it out since they were experimenting with stuff in the recording studio.

What the hell, an electric guitar is essentially just an acoustic guitar amplified whereas Autotune is going into a song and pitch shifting the voice note by note (which can be tedious, I’ll give you that, but still easier than actually putting the effort and singing). When The Beatles did edit their voice back then, they overdubbed the line they messed up on or just did a different take and if they were going to pitch shift it (such as in “Rain ” and “Revolution “), they would pitch shift the entire song. I will agree that they would’ve experimented with it, but again these are the same people who blew bubbles on one LP and used an alarm clock and a dog whistle on the next. Point taken, they’d try anything.

Definitely it’s music. Whether it’s good music or not is not is a matter of opinion. Also, there are definitely a lot of old jazz and classical and etc. musicians who would certainly take issue with your personal definition of “proper music”. And that’s a matter of opinion too, I guess. Opinions are wonderful things!

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

You don’t have to like it. I don’t. But if you say it isn’t music, then you ought to also say Paul’s Fireman albums (the first two, anyway) aren’t music. now, some people will quite possibly agree it isn’t, but then where do you draw the line?

If you don’t like it, don’t listen to it. It’s as simple as that.

Had a look and rummage around on YouTube and whilst its not something I would seek out or add to my iPod its definitely music. The whole point of music is that it can be created in many thousands of different ways and doesn’t need to follow pre-determined lines or rules on what makes it so.

Whether or not you like it is another matter.

Maybe it’s just a coincidence and the one you have listened to is really bad and lacks of any kind of effort put in its production, but i bet there are tons of very well dubstep music produced out there, somewhere… Same thing for hip-hop, rap and so…

I would definitely say dubstep is music.

At some point music is going to move on and leave you behind. Try and be more graceful about it, dad rants about music are just silly. Poor dubstep, it only wants to wobble, it’s only dub + 2step.

<Rocky> And now here’s something we hope you’ll REALLY LIKE!

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

I helped a student who was writing a paper about Dubstep for the American Popular Music class. I’d say it is music of some form.

I’m not saying that I don’t call it music, I just really hate it and feel that a 5 year old can do it to some extent.

Got to listen to those albums, don’t really like The Beatles solo careers that much.

P1. You could also call Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite or Revolution 9 a pre cursor to this genre also, but there is a lot more to Tommorow Never Knows (or Revolution 9 or Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite for that matter). Tommorow Never Knows has a full on lead vocal and drums, bass, organ, sitar and even rhythm guitar (possibly) that were not looped and the reversed guitar solo by Paul sounds nice too (even though it is just Taxman reversed, slowed down a full step, and scrambled up). Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite has no loops whatsoever and it’s only use of previously released audio was the 2 organ solos (the fact that they just threw bits of it in the air and picked it up in a random order is still astounding to this day). Revolution 9 is far more closer to Dubstep than Tommorow Never Knows, but it still has Revolution 1 (Take 20) buried deep inside.

P2. Haven’t heard it yet, though it can be there.

P3. And I agree, just not GOOD music.
