Ahhh Mom had her surgery, and we are back at her house now. She is still in a lot of pain, and we have to wake up every few hours for her to take medicine and for me to do an in-and-out catheterization on her. She has an appointment with a urologist Monday. I wonder how long we will have to keep doing these caths. It isn’t easy!
I’m So Tired , but I’m hanging in there.

Thoughts and hugs are with Ahhh Mum (and yourself), AG; I hope she can get some relief from her pain soon. And some rest for yourself. Having aged and ailing parents is no fun for anyone.
Another thing that’s no fun: those in ‘n’ out catheterizations you spoke of – and of which I myself have personally received probably 30-40 over the last several weeks of my own hospitalization, which itself is now in its sixth week. To refresh everyone’s memory: I had surgery in the muscles along my spine to remove cysts, which were excruciatingly painful, and have been recovering ever since. And I’m happy to say that recovery is going quite well – incisions down my back have healed nicely, I’ve regained a lot of strength and mobility, and am learning to use a walker to take very short supervised walks – no more than the length of a room, and I’m still pretty unsteady, but it’s a start. Strength and balance are definitely improving, slowly steadily, and the goal is for me to be sent home by July 31st. (Or more precisely, helicoptered back to hospital in my own town on that date; I’m currently 200 miles away from home, in a larger health facility in a bigger town, where I was flown after it was determined that I needed emergency spine surgery, and with the knowledge that there was no spine specialist in my own town. Whether I’ll require further hospitalization back in my town is something I’m unsure of as yet.) And in another welcome sign of recovery, I’ve mostly regained the ability to pee whenever I want, meaning almost no more in-and-out catheters, yay!

Glad to hear you are on the mend, @Von Bontee. Keep up the walking and add physical activity as you can. Ahhh Mom walked around the hospital floor the very night after her surgery. Then she walked several times a day the next two days. The doctors, nurses, and therapists all said she was in the top 1% of all the patients they have ever tended to as far as getting up and moving after spine surgery. Ahhh Mom was a nurse at a rehab hospital for 2 decades. She knows that she will end up in a nursing home if she doesn’t keep moving…and she really fears going to a nursing home.

Very encouraging and inspiring news about Ahhh Mom and her recovery there, AG – she sounds like a real fighter!
And thanks for the well-wishes towards myself, all!
(Oh, and this would be post #11000 for myselves! An average of 2.06 posts/day since 2009; down from 2 15 when I reached 10K two years ago, and from 2.25 when I calculated it the time before that. Seems inevitable it’ll drop below 2.0 one day 🙁 )

Wishing all the best for speedy recoveries to Ahhh Mom and Von Bontee!
Keeping mobile as far as possible or getting back to mobility after surgery etc is immensely important.
I have quite severe osteoporosis and have had 6 vertebral crush fractures which I discovered back in 2019. My one word response to this diagnosis Out Of The Blue was “S**t!!!”
As well as having treatments for this I have been vigilant about keeping mobile and I walk a lot, especially uphill for better weight-bearing exercise. I had already been doing that before I got the diagnosis, so I was already reasonably fit and once I recovered from the worst of the back pain I was right back into the walking. I can do housework and gardening, lawn mowing etc but avoid risky things like climbing high ladders. I’m hoping that keeping as active as possible will save me from the fate of needing a walking frame. The bit of pain I always have is partly from the scoliosis I also have and is very bearable. For this I’m extremely grateful!
I’m going for another bone density scan next week and am hoping the last treatment I’ve been having has improved things.
Anyone out there who knows they have low bone density, my advice is keep this in mind and get regular scans and don’t just assume like I did that everything will be OK….

@Timothy I’m sorry to hear about that. I hope they will heal soon.
Thanks @Rube. I’m off work until Monday and will keep ice on my wrist. Good to see you around here too.
I can say now my wrist is good again. The bruising lingered for a while. Going to be careful but won’t stop cycling.

It’s ‘Spiderman’ season at the cinema, all eight films shown in order over eight weeks, so I will go and see those having only watched the newest ones with that guy I cannot remember the name of.
With the recent three(?) starting out as very average and sliding down to who cares, I was surprised to enjoy the 2002 Toby Maguire start-up a lot. Lots of fun with a very OTT in a good way Green Goblin clearly highlighting how rubbish and lacking most Marvel films are now.
Tom Holland.
Add: There was no multiverse bollocks now that I think of it. Maybe that’s why it was so much better. Back at a time when we didn’t have to suffer such garbage.

I’m with you on the Spider-Man kick, missed out on the first one because I was in the middle-of-nowhere in Donegal over the weekend, and then work is stripping off parts of the company (including staff) with the ultimate goal to sell us to Americans in a neat little package (I plan to be gone long before that happens), so I’m a lot busier than I used to be, so didn’t manage to get to the cinema to see the first one.
Going to see SM2 tomorrow with one of my best friends.

Well, it took until this past Sunday, August 11, rather than the projected July 31; and the journey was in a prop-plane rather than a helicopter (flight time: 48 minutes); but nonetheless, after a full two months away, I’m finally back home in town, 496km northwest of the 1969 “Live Peace In Toronto ” concert, and 4 km north of my apartment, where I’ll be allowed to return, after just a few more days here in the Sault Area Hospital, where my rehab is almost fully completed! Whereas I was still fairly weak, slow and unsteady while learning to use a walker when I wrote that previous post a month ago, now I’ve improved significantly, to the point where I can take strolls up and down the long hallways of this facility, to the Tim Horton’s (Canadian coffee/doughnut institution) outlet, all the way at the opposite end, without tiring.
And, indeed, it was just an hour ago that I walked down there to buy myself a medium-sized Dark Roast (double cream, no sugar); and was pleased to discover this fine item and display in the hallway directly outside the shop:

Great news that you are Getting Better , @Von Bontee.
I just got back from Ahhh Mom’s house. I’ve been there since July 6th. She is still in pain from her spine surgery. Her intake evaluation for rehab was today. I hope they can get her strong enough and confident enough to walk without her walker. She is so desperate to walk free. The urologist says mom may have to self-cath for the rest of her life. I find that devastating, but she is taking it in stride. I’m more stressed about her health than she is. I wonder how much longer she will be able to live on her own. Her stepson (my half brother) will be at her house Sunday nights to Thursday afternoons for a while until mom is able to drive. I wonder how long it will take for me to calm down.

Take each day as it comes. Some days you will have the energy and the capacity to take it all in your stride, some days you won’t. Go easy on yourself.
