I’ve been working like mad lately without even time to read the forum . Destined to get even busier if our president carries out his threat to regulate social media. Very grateful to be working, don’t get me wrong…but would like it to be, I don’t know, a little more normal…
Surely that wouldn’t be constitutional? My brother woke me up last night to tell me about it and I laughed because I thought he was joking…

Last pre-calculus quiz done! Now I just have to do my last bits of French and one last chemistry POGIL and then I’m done with junior year!
Good for you! I have my screenwriting final project, a few French assignments, and a precalc project but then that’s probably it for me too. 🙂

Weeeeeelllllll, it depends. There’s an argument to be made that tech companies themselves have the First Amendment right to publish or not publish whatever they want, but there’s also an argument that they’ve become so ubiquitous they’re more like phone lines or other such platforms, which are themselves bound by the First Amendment (a phone company provides a service that it can’t deprive you of just because it doesn’t like what you’re saying). It’s quite complicated, and I’m sure that neither the president nor his critics acknowledge the nuance of the issue, because when do they ever?
Personally, I’m extremely uncomfortable with the idea of giving the government the ability to regulate these tech companies because what’s worse, private companies regulating your speech or the government? It’s a bit devil-and-the-deep-blue-sea.

Whatever the order says it will be subject to serious legal challenges. I guess part of what he wants to do is roll back protections against certain types of liability, that part sounds bad but probably not unconstitutional.
The troubling part is that he wants to try to ensure social media providers don’t moderate with some sort of “bias” which is ridiculously dangerous and I imagine unconstitutional.

I don’t have a strong opinion on this, but we should probably move to the politics & philosophy thread to discuss the topic.

Applied for a 2-week online summer immersion program that I really hope I get accepted into and made a college list that includes my “safety” and “reach” schools– there’s always a tiny voice in my head doubting me for wanting to apply to more top tier schools but I feel like I just have to remain optimistic, and everything should be fine as I long as I know that I’d be happy with my “safety” schools no matter what. I’m also trying not to worry about finances rn when making my list, because I read somewhere that it’s better to worry about that stuff once you know where you got accepted and what financial aid you’re eligible for.

I mean, I guess, but surely regulating communication platforms is also a violation of free speech and the first amendment? It strikes me as mildly hypocritical and if this was really spawned by Twitter fact-checking one of Trump’s tweets, I also think it’s a little bit of an abuse of power– he’s so mad at Twitter for correcting a false statement that he’s using his power in the federal government to punish them? I could be wrong but that’s how it appears to me.
Love one another.

Got accepted into the 2-week all-girls computer science immersion thingy, so that’s cool. Finished up most of my last bit of schoolwork, so I’m basically done with junior year– I only have a few more problems left on my chemistry POGIL, but those are just due Monday so i can complete that over the weekend. Currently looking for volunteer opportunities that I can pursue to occupy my summer– there’s openings at a local animal shelter, so I might look into that. Also, I registered for a bunch of virtual “campus tours” and webinars for a few colleges on my list. Today I had one with University of Texas Austin– the people running it were the same tour guides that would give actual irl campus tours if things were normal, so they were still very informative even if we weren’t there physically. They knew their stuff and were very engaging– the info they gave on UT Austin was cool too. They definitely gave me a lot of things to consider (the campus and its architecture is quite lovely, too, even if I could only view it through pictures) I also found out that I have a better chance of getting the financial aid that I need from some of the out-of-state schools on my list than from my “safety” in-state schools, making the out-state-tuition way more affordable for me than I imagined (my household is in one of the lower income brackets, so that also significantly lowers the estimated net price when potential financial aid is factored in).

UT Austin has a beautiful campus, and Austin is a great city. I have in-laws there. Be prepared for hot weather if you go there.

As a Southerner I can’t stress this enough @lovelyritametermaid. You will absolutely spend most of the year dashing between wells of sweet, sweet air-conditioning. If sweating is not something you fancy, you might want to rethink your school choice.

Oh, don’t worry, I love hot weather– so I think I’d be fine! Sweating isn’t something that really bothers me as long as I get to shower at the end of the day

Currently taking tentative steps into the outside world, going a bit further afield than normal (managed a wild swim yesterday and got very sunburnt) and have actually met up with a different friend than the one I’ve occasionally seen in the last couple of weeks.
