Linde! So good to see you 😀
I’m in Dublin Airport queuing for a flight to Nice. My ticket was so bloody expensive and now I know why, there’s a group of 40 French kids who must’ve been on an English-learning trip that messed up the algorithm and caused the flight to go into triple digits.

Good to see you all too! I thought I had been long forgotten.
I’m well. Got a full time job (not something I studied for, but my colleagues are awesome and it pays the bills) and I’m moving out of my parents’ house, like I said. It’s pretty small, about 50 m2, but it’s in the middle of town looking out over a square with a church and the edge of a forest. It’s also only a couple of streets away from my parents and also close to where I was born, so it’s definitely a place with warm memories and I’m very enthusiastic.
One thing that isn’t going all that well is driving lessons. The school I want to take lessons from says you need to pass the theory exam first, and I’ve already failed twice. I don’t know, I don’t really have any feeling with it and I sorta have a fear of driving. My test lessons didn’t go too well either. Plus it doesn’t really interest me so it’s hard. Why I want to get my permit? Because I want to be more independent and want to be able to go everywhere without the cons of public transport. So I guess I’ll have to keep on going on..
Oh also, I’m going to see the Analogues in January. Anyone heard of them? If not, they’re a fantastic Dutch Beatles tribute band, but they replicate all of the sounds. If the Beatles have used some bell that can only be found in some catacomb in Iceland, they sure as hell will find it and use it. Really awesome.

BBers may come and go, but they’re never forgotten.
Oh man, that band sounds incredible! When I go to the Netherlands, hopefully next year, that’s now on my bucket list to do.
Good luck with your driving. To some it comes naturally, like me, to others it doesn’t, like you. It’s annoying but that’s life. When you do get your licence, and you will, the sense of accomplishment will be great!

@Linde hallo! Glad you’re doing well. I relate on the driving lessons— I find driving completely and utterly terrifying and I’ve been learning since April so good luck!
same here. Well, I’m not completely terrified, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the feeling of independence a little bit, but I need lots more practise. Sorry to have missed you, good luck with everything @Linde!

Thanks all!
I’m actually very late with the driving. I turned 25 in April and the instructors even commented on it. I didn’t even realize that’s actually a thing?!
Do you think that feeling of being scared will fade after some lessons?
Anyone have any plans this summer?
@the hole got fixed What will you be doing in the Netherlands next year?

Yeah, the age that young people learn to drive has been getting higher but most people still learn to drive in their late teens, at least. (Of course, I live in the US where it’s much less feasible, outside of a few metropolitan centers, to rely solely on public transport.) I’m sure your fear will fade after you’ve practised and gotten comfortable with it, which I’m sure you will.

Though, of course, as I was just discussing with AG, we are probably in the last few years before self-driving vehicles start taking over the roads, removing the lorry drivers, the taxi drivers, the delivery drivers… quite possibly personal ownership of vehicles, you’ll just order up a self-driving car as the buses, trams and local rail go out of business. And all will be built by machines.
Good to see you, @Linde. Pleased to hear life ain’t so bad.

Yes. I was a little scared when I started but I’m not scared after some practice. Hopefully the same will apply to you.

I’ve got winter to worry about right now… fun times!
@the hole got fixed What will you be doing in the Netherlands next year?
I’ve always been interested in Dutch culture so I’ve been teaching myself a bit of Dutch, which has furthered my interest in exploring the country. I have no real plans yet, but if you have any good suggestions, I’d be happy to hear them!

Can definitely relate to the driving fears. Even though I’m mostly used to it now (I passed my test second time in February) I do get scared of longer journeys, because most of my drives are ones I have done plenty of times.

I’ve never driven before, and I’m not sure I ever will. I was born with partial blindness in my right eye, and though it’s not enough to legally prevent me from driving, I still feel like it’s enough that I wouldn’t be safe doing it (driving is already objectively dangerous for people with perfect vision).

I just took my earbuds out to talk to a friend (I’m at school in my free periods) and I look back and one of them was dangling in my cup of tea.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
That’s the fourth pair this year….
(it still works, the bass frequencies have improvedbut the highs are all gone. Still useless to me)

Ever since I started using wireless headphones, my life has vastly improved. I’d always get those bloody cords caught on things and it would rapidly kill my headphones/earbuds/headphone jack.

Honestly, though, without the wires I’d probably lose them within seconds. I once managed to lose a pair (WITH wires) while flying in an airplane— without ever leaving my seat.
