Anyone else just get really exhausted by the world sometimes? Since I spend so much time thinking about and consuming media related to politics, I’ve been feeling pretty world weary lately, so tonight I’m shutting it all out, ordering a pizza and watching the Lord of the Rings
Every day. I regularly ask questions which no one else does as I try to understand what is happening and get left confused as they walk off muttering.

I just got the bill for my gallbladder surgery. Insurance paid over $19k which left me paying $3,423.05.

We’re in Zion today and woke up at five in the morning to slog through a freezing river for five hours. I’m exhausted, but a part of me actually found it kinda fun… I’m a changed person

Gahh… and to think I was annoyed when the dentist charged me £22.70 today Errrr… right… no politics for me
By chance I just rediscovered this awesome short film of a Scottish BMX rider that I used to watch all the time when I was younger, and the nostalgia is overwhelming. A really stunning video, particularly with the music and the background of Skye, one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Pssttt…. maybe if we post political stuff in spoilers it won’t count
To be honest, even though I strongly dislike Trump and everything he stands for, I probably wouldn’t turn down the chance to go for a rally. Sometimes it can be fascinating to experience things your instincts tell you to avoid
Today I was warming a pizza in the oven, but I forgot to take the cardboard off the bottom when I put it in, so I had to prize them apart with a knife. Not my proudest moment, but at least I didn’t end up burning the house down

Sounds like a plan.
It was really interesting to behold. We saw a Trump supporter engaged in some very enthusiastic (in a good way) dialogue with some anti-Trump individuals, which was really cool because you usually only see the two sides screaming at each other and not listening.
Also, I strongly believe in taking in all sides of an argument, whether you like/agree with/feel comfortable with them or not. Attending the rally didn’t make me support Trump any more or less than I did before, but I was very interested in just seeing what was going on and what kind of audience there was and what the protesters were up to. I have to say, the protesters were not terribly impressive.

But if you had, you could have sung BURNIN’ DOWN THE HOUSE!

I don’t do spoilers, @QuarryMan…
I am neither proud or ashamed to admit that I have tried many, if not most, prohibited drugs in my 52 years; I am proud I have never injected though, or considered it.
Some things are a risk too far.
Some things take you down dark alleyways you think easy to escape only to find you can’t find the way out. I see a Trump Rally increasingly like that – a long, hard walk to Nuremberg…
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Pastor Martin Niemöller, 1946
Words to be remembered in these increasingly ugly political times…

I was there, Ron. It was nothing like ‘a long, hard walk to Nuremberg’ — it was, for the most part, just a political rally like any other, until the audience got a little too enthusiastic and started that tasteless and uncalled-for chant.

A relevant vid to accompany that quote:
Getting away from politics we moved out of our house yesterday (hence my semi-abscence the last few days), and we’ll be travelling until I go to college. Very bittersweet.

And who among them would have imagined Nuremberg, the rallies and the trials, when the leading Nazis were coming together in 1920s Munich, @Beatlebug?
Who among them would have imagined six million dead Jews?
Your President may claim not to be a racist but from Obama and his birth certificate to Charlottesville, from Mexican rapists to telling four elected ethnic Congresswomen to go back where they came from (even though for three of them that’s right where they are).
He may be claiming today that he didn’t like the chant, and that he quickly stopped it (after 12 and a half seconds of lapping it up), but this is him trying out his script for 2020.

I think if we’re going to discuss how harmful Trump is and may well end up being (and I totally agree that he is leading the USA towards fascism), we should do it in a thread like ‘philosophy’ so the people who come to this forum to escape the stresses of the political world don’t have to sift through conversations that could probably become pretty toxic. That’s why I suggested the spoilers (though partially as a joke) @Ron Nasty .

This is the thread @Beatlebug chose to respond in, @QuarryMan, in favour of your attending a Trump rally.
Another view was necessary.
Unfortunately, BB rarely joins in the discussions that take place in more appropriate threads like the News Thread when Trump comes up.

I agree with RN. America has become dangerously divided between ‘us’ and ‘them’.
To Goodwin the argument immediately, Nazism started in beer halls- it doesn’t take long for you to constantly hear “these people are bad, they’re ruining the country, they should be thrown out”, before you begin thinking “yes, they are bad. Our country doesn’t want or need these people”.

I just don’t have the energy for political discussions on the forum these days, particularly as my point of view is so drastically different from most of y’all that I end up feeling like I have to fight tooth and nail to defend my positions. Besides, I’m a moderator now and I feel I would rather try to stay fairly neutral. My post in this thread was one exception, which I am rapidly coming to regret — despite my efforts to keep it as uncontentious as possible, I realise now that such an attempt was completely in vain. I guess you could say it was an optimistic experiment in seeing if it was possible to mention Trump as a contextual aside without the conversation descending into a s**t-slinging contest. @Ron Nasty, you say that ‘another view was necessary,’ but you could very well have responded in another thread, linking to our conversation here, to avoid introducing contention into this thread.
I really don’t think we need to continue this discussion further, at least here; please forget I ever mentioned Trump in this thread in the first place. Carry on, everyone…

Can we not grind this thread to a halt with discussions on what we think Trump is, there are other threads to get involved in such things (‘I Read The News Today‘ and ‘Philosophy‘ especially) as long as it’s polite, welcoming to all sides and not personal slurs (as most threads on politics have a tendency to become but thankfully not so far on here).
Thanks.

Yesterday I went and saw the new ‘Lion King’. Was expecting it to be awful but was actually a very good cover of a brilliant original (except the songs which were rubbish in comparison). Folk were crying at the first death so I’m interested in seeing the reaction to a new Bambi film when the mum dies as that is still one of the most upsetting moments ever in film.

I’ve been trying out transcendental meditation over the last few weeks. I did a search on the forum and found a general meditation thread which is closed and I was going to start a new one but found I’m blocked from opening a new discussion in the All Together Now section.
