Been buying a whole lot of 50s Rock and Roll Records and have been enjoying them very much
My mom would like hanging out with you during a 50’s music binge.

I can take 50s music for short time. In small doses. After a while, it starts sounding too over-the-top “sweet,” too innocent. Makes me think of the era of the 50s with so much segregation in the US. Maybe it is just the style my mom listens to? After listening to it for a bit, all I can see are girls in poodle skirts and boys with slicked-back hair at a sock hop (privileged white kids).
Feel free to me over this hang-up of mine.

It must be the kind she listens to, @Ahhh Girl. I’m pretty sure there were plenty of black/etcetera musicians were doing things in the 50’s, too, making music that was considerably less Rockwellian.
This is just me, but when I listen to something, I try to divorce it from its context if that context makes the listening experience less enjoyable. I mean, one could make a similar argument against happy-go-lucky pop music from 1968.

I can understand that. I really only listen to Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Roy Orbison, so i’m probably missing some stuff.

The only 50s music I know is 50s songs that the Beatles covered.
You should give some of it a go, particularly the rock and roll stuff, which will probably heighten your enjoyment of the early Beatles music. Stuff like Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and so on are all worth a go.
There’s also a huge amount of great jazz music from the 50s if you’re interested in that.

BeatlebugI've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Yes, there is the syrupy sweet, fake music like Perry Como and Pat Boone, and then there is what they called “race music,” which was blues and R&B. Artists like Elvis brought the race music to white people who would not have otherwise sought it out. That was the end of teenage girls being prim and proper and walking around with umbrellas and wearing white lace gloves.

I don’t believe there’s anything wrong with listening to syrupy sweet pop from the 50s, but it definitely only tells one side of the story… and not a very realistic side either. Of course, you may not be listening to the music to be told a cultural story at all. Sometimes you just like what you like. (I don’t particularly like it though )

I’m listening to a bunch of idiots sitting near me flex their egos at each other, it’s sickening. Also I feel terrible today and I still have two hours of school to suffer through before I’m free.
Today is not my day.

Thanks Walry, you’re the best.
I have this terrible habit of forgetting to drink water and getting super super dehydrated and I think that’s what’s wrong with me. But school is over and I’m home and I drank some water so hopefully I’ll be back to normal soon.
