You’re kidding me, you haven’t heard the French Horn solo inbetween the 1st verse and chorus of Sgt. Pepper .
I revisited it and of course, I hear it every time, just never registered that it was a French horn.

I wasn’t aware of a solo in For No One … I need to listen to it again (how terrible!)
That solo is pretty much synonymous with the instrument for me.

I wanted to play the flute in junior high but due to the strict gender norms in America at the time (mid 1980’s) I was told it was a girl’s instrument. So I ended up playing the cornet. They tried to force me to play trombone but I refused. I always thought the french horn had a better tone than the cornet.

Although I think it’s funny that you wanted to play the flute instead of a normal instrument (guitar/bass/drums/piano), it’s also funny they called it a girl’s instrument, as there’s several male flautists.
Telling you that only a male can play flute is like telling you only Indians can play the Sitar, and we all know that’s a lie.

There normally aren’t Guitars in Marching Band.

The only one of those that usually exist in band class is drums, and not a drum kit.
However in jazz band there are sometimes drums, guitar, and piano, but those aren’t very common.

Most of my band’s flute players are female. Stereotypically the section is made up of super cutsie girls. There have only been 3 male flutes in the band at once.

I don’t know what stupid school you go to Billy Shears, but I don’t know why they wouldn’t use guitars/bass/drums/piano in a band class. Are they trying to say that rock and roll’s the devil and that only classical music is acceptable (reminds me of my grandparents on my father’s side, who I don’t get along with). If that’s the case, then why is the piano considered unacceptable, there are lots of classical pianists and also, why would you have drums, but not a drum kit.
Maybe you should try posting more.

I think it’s partially a money thing, and partially a logistic thing. The main things that are played in the school band are brass or woodwind instruments or percussion intsruments like xylophones and then small misc instruments like the triangle. Because of the sheer amount of kids in the band program it’s easier to do those instruments because they sound good in high quantities. On the other hand having 10+ pianos or guitars in one band is not feasible money wise, and would probably sound terrible. It’s not that they’re saying that those aren’t good instruments, it’s just the way band class is.

No string instruments whatsoever, I would’ve expected a violin or 2. Also, there are plenty ways of getting 10 kids to sound great with rock instruments, here’s my pick:
1. Rhythm Guitar
2. Lead Guitar
3. 2nd rhythm or 2nd lead guitar (depending on the song)
4. Bass Guitar
5. Drums
6. Piano
7. Lead Vocals
8. Additional percussion
And have the rest of the kids be either in the orchestra or the chorus

Well all the string instruments(the violins, and the bigger violins) are in the orchestra. And then those kids that have singing voices are in choir. We are three separate entities. We don’t ever combine unless we do, which is occasionally.
As far as guitars go, there is a guitar class where they get a bunch of kids to play acoustic guitar together. It’s relatively new, and it has an …interesting… sound to say the least.
1. Rhythm Guitar
2. Lead Guitar
3. 2nd rhythm or 2nd lead guitar (depending on the song)
4. Bass Guitar
5. Drums
6. Piano
7. Lead Vocals
8. Additional percussion
Also if those are the numbers of students on the instruments listed, that only adds up to 36. There are 150+ kids in my school band. Our band is pretty big, but even smaller schools have 40-60 kids in their band program.

Does your class play any Beatles music Billy, as I’d like to see your class perform. Also, I know this is a little far fetched, but if you have the balls to do it, you should try to get your school band to play with a local Beatles tribute act, I bet both your band and the tribute act would be honored to play together and although I am a big fan of the lead guitar/rhythm guitar/bass/drums formula, I believe that Beatles tribute bands sound better with an orchestra for the songs that originally had one in it. Hell, if you posted it on YouTube, I’d watch the whole thing.

Replace that with the Chapman Stick.

We play more classical music, however we do really fun tunes. Recently we did this Krampus song which was a medley of distorted Christmas songs with narration. It was a very fun song to play.

Bass harmonicas are a little more unusual, though.
