@Linde Interesting you bring that up. In my experience, there are major advantages that students access to the internet in terms of education. But that’s all I grew up with, so I am just used to school being done that way. I haven’t been home much today, although I’m embarrassed to say I’ve been thinking about this conversation a lot. My latest thoughts on the issue are as follows
The majority of the incredible technology we have access to, especially social media, is terribly abused. You can talk to someone in another country without any effort, and yet so many people just use at as an outlet to their inner egomaniac (Taking pictures of their food, their clothes etc) However I totally understand the advantage of having that kind of communication open to you. What I don’t understand is why people my age feel the need to have a handful of blogs, a Facebook, and probably a Twitter account as well. Why? What does the average 16 year old have to say that would be of interest to anyone? Absolutely nothing. It brings out this unbridled narcism in so many people that is just bazar
That’s what I like about this forum- there is real conversation happening and connections being made. It isn’t just an outlet for hopeless egomaniacs.

The anonymity of the internet and lack of real life consequences could explain some of it. Here is something that explains some of the internet behavior a little

I’m back
I don’t know why, but I took a bit of a break from here. I guess part of my depression.
On a lighter note, I received a new job last Wednesday. So, that is helping me both financially and depression wise too. I have finally closed the chapter of that “other” job. Still on the meds, but I will pull through.

Welcome back @Sky999. Glad to hear the other job is behind you, you are moving on and you are posting again. Good to have you around.
As for technology and its use, its all about balance as with everything else. Dont let it overtake your life and let it become the be-all of your existance and you will be fine as it has many benefits. Just be able to put it down (whether its an ipod/ipad, smartphone, whatever) and get thru a few hours without withdrawl symptoms. As some folk here will know i dont have a mobile phone as i hate how folk become so heavily attached to them and i’m not on any social network site like facebook or twitter, mainly as i dont care what folk are up to in their mundane bits of life nor do i want to be hassled to like someone just to boost their ego. However i’m not a social person and do not crave such things. Such an existance has it good and bad side. Its up to each individual to make it thru the day.
As for kiddies with their devices then its down to the parents to limit the amount of time their beloved are on the damn things and ensure they get that social personal contact and interaction – same goes with watching tv: a couple of hours can be good but for goodness sake turn it off and read them a book and stimulate them away from it. Get them running around playing in or outdoors and dont fear them making a mess. I hated art in school as it was paint in the lines and be tidy, apples must be red – screw that for a sense of fun, i’m making a disaster zone around me and apples can be purple so to you.
All my opinion.

Welcome back sky999. Best of luck with everything.
Great discussion on technology above. I have no problem with it – wouldn’t have this site without it and I wouldn’t have gotten to know all of you. I just hope that live, in-person human contact does not eventually get sacrificed because of it. At a friend’s house recently, there were two teens sitting on a sofa texting…each other. It made me shiver.

I find my general mood is directly proportional to the amount of real life social interaction I have. The internet is a wonderful tool, as are cell phones, but they’re really just tools. I’ve been internet-addicted before and I found myself depressed a lot.

What’s happening in my life?
Not posting too much on this here forum because I’ve been obsessing over Elvis Presley and building my Elvis collection. I’ve recently encountered some very weird books on Elvis, all about how earth is not his true home and he came from a blue star. It might make for entertaining reading.
I’m going to Las Vegas with the wife on August 28, where we will see The Beatles Love, do some shopping at the all-Beatles store, and see the statue of Elvis at Las Vegas Hotel (which is now called something different) that his father and the Colonel dedicated to him after his death.
Then our next big event is Paul McCartney in October with ahhh girl.

trcanberra – lose a car, gain a cold. Yikes.
Hope the cold gets better – I just got over mine. I was miserably congested for a week, but the nagging cough lasted 2 weeks. No fun.
Best of luck to you in all situations.

I start 10th Grade in 30 minutes. How I feel right now :I’ll be right there with you in two weeks
That was the year I took chemistry and geometry. I don’t remember much about either, other than the fact that I took them. Oh, yeah, I do remember that having been drilled about angles helped me when mom and I were putting together the “He Man and the Masters of the Universe” tent for my brother for his Christmas morning present from Santa. And one chemistry memory…we had to take a quiz on the periodic chart every day until every single student made a 100 for that day. If even one person made less than a perfect score, we all had to take it again…and again…and again…until EVERYONE make a 100 that particular day. It took about a month into the school year for the magic day to happen. It covered all those itty-bitty numbers on there and everything.
Good luck to all of our school people. May you have a wonderful year.

I remember chemistry. I cheated off the person who sat next to me whenever there was a quiz. When there was a test, I “got sick” and missed class. Then I could take the makeup exam and the teacher would leave the room to get something to eat and I could copy the answers from my book. We also had this thing called an “isomer lab.” I still don’t know what an isomer is. We were supposed to do these things and we all got together and pooled our answers and copied off each other. But I didn’t do anything. So I just copied. The teacher was fat and had these things called “K labs.” K stood for “kitchen.” That was where he got all the moms to make him food so the kids could earn extra credit. He also fondled the young girls.

That was the year I took chemistry and geometry.
My least favorite math and science! Luckily I didn’t have to take them in the same year, I took geometry in 8th and since I was two years ahead took some sort of Pre-Calc + my sophomore year. I think since we had geometry younger the teacher was easy on us so that was the only thing that made that better then chem in my eyes. Looking back, he must not have been a good teacher or something just didn’t click for me, because the thing I was struggling most with took three seconds of explaining by my Algebra II teacher to make perfect sense.
My chem teacher was horrible. She expected you to know everything and got frustrated really easily. She was very bad at explaining things and chem is already bad enough, so not a good combination…
I hope we’re not scaring all the people who have to take it! It was just horrible though…
