I don’t own the place at all. The owner is my childhood friend Bill’s cousin and I don’t have a job, yet I am still searching. My friend was fortunate enough to strike a deal with his cousin so me and my friend (who recently went through a depressing divorce) could stay at the cost of:
1. We have to get a job within 3 months and pay him $1,000 each within 6 months of when we moved in or we’re living in the woods
2. We have to get up at the crack ass of dawn and do my landlord’s every request (typically stuff such as mowing the lawn, raking the leaves, buying him and his family’s grocery’s)
Also, I don’t want to work with my state’s job and family and services department, as it would make me feel like I am stupid and have special needs. Personally, I am thinking about getting Steve to convince the manager at Burger King to hire me as well, although I am not sure if that would work. Also, wouldn’t it be a Breathalyzer test, not a drug test because the only time I ever did drugs that weren’t for medical reasons was when my friend tricked me into smoking weed, although I thought it was just a cigarette.
1) So it’s the friend that might live with you’s dad? That’s not bad, averages out to 333/month for the both of you – I think it sounds like a good plan. What about utilities & food (I assume you buy your food, this would be a great deal if even some utils are included).
2) However, that’s a major drawback. But, even in Kalamazoo, I doubt you can maintain an apartment for less than twice that. So think of it as working for part of your rent.
3) Well, you do have special needs, especially if your criminal history includes a felony or two. They work with employers who are willing to give 2nd chances to convicts and those with especially heinous job records, so you might want to swallow your pride. Or you could try on your own, the burger king for example, and if you don’t have any luck in a month or so go to the state help. If you were intoxicated on alcohol and that’s all you’ve ever used, then you have nothing to worry about from a urine test (but I think most jobs do them routinely these days – in my wife’s recent experience they all do). With alcohol all you have to do is not drink the night before (or maybe not get teetotaled 2 nights before!).
PS – thanks for your honesty 🙂 we are all pretty non-judgmental here (think that’s sort of a requirement to be a Beatlemaniac 🙂

Doesn’t the marriage let you stay in Australia? (or maybe you need to go back to at least clean up your affairs?). There’s a reality show here in the states called 90 Day Fiance, because if you marry an American citizen you get to stay in the country, so there’s 5 couples who found mates in other countries. The catch is, once the potential mate is in the country you have 90 days to get married or they have to leave.
Regardless, I hope you don’t have to be apart long!

@Matt Busby Wow, there’s a lot going on there. I sincerely hope it all works out for you in Seattle (I’ve heard it’s a fabulous place).
I’ve enjoyed the time I’ve spent out there. Doris & her dad went to the Experience Music Project, it was free Saturday, she says I’d love it, I can’t wait to go. It’s a beautiful area as far as scenery (one of the things Ohio is sadly lacking in). The view of Mt. Ranier alone is inspiring anytime (watch for it if you ever fly into Seattle, sit in the left window seat unless you’re coming from CA). I’ve been up the space needle, to Jimi’s gravesite, to a beautiful city overlook, up into the nearby mountains. There’s a great music scene there (origin of grunge, Jimi’s hometown, street musicians…). And something’s legal there…

Afraid not @Matt Busby – my mother was most upset when she found @HongKongLady had to leave. As with most countries these days Australia has a very restrictive immigration policy and since Vicky arrived on a tourist visa we have to comply with the conditions of that visa or put future visa applications at risk.
That future application will be for a spouse visa – which takes 12-18 months to decide! We will apply sometime during Vicky’s next visit or two as it is more likely to be approved the longer we have lived together. They are trying to avoid the situation which used to exist where people were buying fake weddings for $30,000 so they could get a quick and easy permanent visa; now they have gone too far the other way and in my humble made it too restrictive. Once we apply for the spouse visa and start our 12-18 months wait there is the possibility of obtaining a bridging visa so that Vicky can stay here while they decide – but that’s not guaranteed.
It’s interesting how little most of us know about immigration policy until it affects us – the only one that gets any attention in the media is generally refugee policy. Family Reunion Visas are even more deplorable – the current waiting time on those here is 20-30 years!!

Still under negotiation @Ahhh Girl – HKL can come back anytime but there are a couple of family birthdays she wants to attend in the Philippines first. Her tourist visa is still valid for 3-month visits until July next year and we are planning to submit a spouse visa application sometime before then (see the post above for more details).

Awsome analogy!
WARNING – WHINER ALERT
I’m sick. It started last Thursday with coughing and sneezing. The next morning, I woke up with a sore throat, aches and chills. Marvelous. I’m feeling a little better today, but like most males I am a complete child when it comes to being sick. Waaaahhh!!!
On top of that, I am dealing with another round of body work on my car. Some may recall that in late April/early May, my vehicle was struck on the highway by a wheel that came loose from a truck. That caused major damage to the right front corner of my car. Last Friday, while driving to work (sick – Waaaahhh!!!) a construction alert sign came loose and was hurtling toward my car, this time causing major damage to the left front corner. The car is less than 2 years old! It’s getting to the point where a leaf that innocently blows in the wind toward my car causes me to duck for cover.
Worse yet, I am dealing with a case of “survivor’s guilt”. About a month ago, we found out at work that our jobs are changing and staff reductions were handed down. For some of us, it is changing for the better. The rest are losing their jobs. In our Region, there are 12 of us who do what we do plus two managers. Only six of us plus one manager are going forward with the new plan. I am the only one in my division that keeps his job – even my manager got the boot. Many of the menial tasks we used to do are going away and being centralized. Our duties will be more focused on face-to-face client/broker meetings which is the stuff I excel at. I love wining, dining and schmoozing so this will be right up my alley and I am trying to be excited about the future. Tempering the excitement is the fact that my co-workers are losing their jobs. They are more than just co-workers. Many of them have become dear friends even though our offices may be hours apart. Their last day with the company is a month from today. Day-to-day operations and meetings are incredibly awkward. I want to be able to enjoy what is coming down the road but I can’t. I feel so horrible for my friends – survivor’s guilt.
Okay, so these are “first world” problems. I get it. But when you add it all up, it’s still depressing regardless of the “world”. I just needed to vent.
Thanks.

It’s crap others are losing their jobs but a) it’s not your fault and b) what else can you do but get on with it? Quit and join the others searching for work? That’s not going to be to the benefit of anyone.
Apologies if that sounds harsh, its not meant to be. I presume i’m to be more sympathetic.

It’s like trying to stuff Mal in to one of Ringo’s suit jackets.
But, I’m going to make it happen. After giving Joe the item I am bringing for him to borrow, I’ll have plenty of room for souvenirs.
An even better analogy might be ‘trying to stuff Mal into one of George’s suit jackets’, because whilst Ringo is a little guy, George in those days was scrawny as heck, so his suit jacket would have been even tinier.

@Zig, venting is definitely allowed here.
Now that I have gotten used to driving older cars, I don’t think I could ever go back to driving new ones again. I have 3 old cars that cost less to insure than 1 new car. If one goes kerplunk on me, I’ll just pull out another one. I don’t care how they look on the outside. Dents, scratches, whatever. As long as they get good gas mileage and have heat & air.

My friend Steve, who is a year younger than me and has been living with me, my landlord, and my landlord’s family lately, found a job at Burger King and is planning on moving out to the house next door, I was wondering:1. Should I try to convince him to let me live with him, as I knew him since 1987
2. Do you know any place that would hire someone who recently got fired for going to work intoxicated, alongside having multiple criminal charges, in case if he charges me rent
3. Should Steve try to share Wi-Fi with my landlord and split the bill 50/50
Good luck, man because it’s hard as hell to get a job even if you have a clean record and also, I think Steve should rethink this because you can’t just move out the second you get a job.
