Finally got somebody who wants me to teach them German. I mean I love French and everything but yeesh… it’s not fun teaching it to people who pronounce the words badly in an Irish accent, JUST TRY AND BE FRENCH FOR CHRIST’S SAKE!!!

Yesterday was one of the few historical dates I remember………..The Battle of Trafalgar. Like every school boy in my youth Nelson was a bit of a hero. His ‘Raking manoeuvre’ employed at that battle was a brilliantly calculated risk that won the day.<snip>
Equally flabbergasted the girls says…….”What’s Nelson Mandela doing stuck up there for Miss?”
Ah well we all have out heroes……
Thanks for that story. It’s one I never learned in American history – but I am somewhat into military history and
have always wondered exactly what the battlke of Trafalgar was
Hehe about Mandela. But he’s certainly a hero 🙂

I am currently watching all of the Back To The Future films for the 2nd time this week, after each one I watch an episode or two of The Michael J. Fox Show….I think I have a problem
Not sure if you’re in the states, but one of the things that happened in Back to the Future was, the Cubs made the World Series in baseball. They actually made the pennant series (semifinals) this year, but were womped 4-0 by the Mets. Would have been amazing if they had made it though (They are suffering the longest drout without a championship in major sports, last winning in 1908 and last making the Series in 1945).

We will (barring a mishap) finally make it home tomorrow. One of the cool things that’s happened to me on the trip is I’ve been able to use my Deutsch twice! [ @AppleScruffJunior ] Once, I heard some young folk speaking Deutsch in the elevator up to the Seattle Space Needle. I remember the grammar pretty well, but am very poor on vocabulary (having last taken it in Uni in 1987). I actually learned English grammar in high school German (I knew it all internally, having been an avid reader, but I didn’t know the official rules or names of parts of sentences). One notable thing German class taught me is when to say “who” and when “whom” is correct. Anyway in the Space Needle I just said a few words – the teen seemed somewhat irritated at my very poor speech. But in Grand Forks, North Dakota, at a McDonalds, I saw a man with a really cute grandson in his arms. I complimented him, but he said “no English”. I thought he had a German accent so I said, questioningly, “Deutsch?”. “Ja”, he answered. I said “Ist er seine gross…”(couldn’t remember the word for son). He answered “Ja, meine gross(whatever – he didn’t use ‘Enkel’)”. I complimented back “Er ist Scho:n”. We said a couple sentences and wished each other a good day. It was pretty cool – I haven’t met any travelers speaking German over here for over 20 years.

True; however, these pages are fully Googleable by anyone, anywhere in the world. One of the things Silly Dad told me to keep in mind.

It isn’t sensitive government information so we don’t have to worry about Hillary Clinton sending out in an email or a Wikileaks-type person releasing it to the news medai.

You may be aware the President Obama has gone back on his promise to get our boys and girls out of Afghanistan. This infuriated me, and I sent him the following – I encourage you to do the same!
President Obama, we have supported you through thick and thin, throughout your presidency. But your announcement that we would keep our troops in Afghanistan really upsets me. The mideast wars have gone on as long as Vietnam and the results are the same. We’ve lost that war, Mr.President. Bring the Boys and Girls back home!!!

Apparently, someone threatened my school. I don’t know the person, and hell, I don’t even know what grade he is in. Nobody really knows what kind of threat it was, but people were saying it was a gun threat, which terrified me. There were even security guards at the school and a news station parked across the street.

News station?
I find that irritating and insensitive. Would be infuriating and a sad state of where we are in the world if an attack happens and you get a few idiots filming it happen and it all being broadcast live on the TV.
