We have had a couple of offers for the house today. The last one was in the ‘acceptable but not great’ range so we will likely take it to get this all over and done with.
Once we exchange contracts (which could be later this week or early next) it will only be a month or so until settlement so I will step up the accommodation-hunting efforts at that point so my son and I have somewhere to hang our hats.
Then the REAL nightmare begins of trying to dispose of a lifetime of assorted “stuff” which we don’t really need anymore but somehow fills half the house and the whole of the garage 🙂

I’ve been really busy for the past month. Last time I checked in, I had reunited with my ex, 4,000km away, ala trc and hkc. That was about 5-6 short weeks ago, and a lot has happened since. I’m flying out there Saturday, and we’re driving her car back, probably leaving Tuesday. After 6 years as a bachelor in my one bdrm flat, it needed a lot of work (still waiting on the repairmen, have put new tile on the kitchen floor and will do the bathroom after they fix the tile, etc.). We’re about going nuts with excitement – not sure if I mentioned, we were actually married for 8 months, before it fell apart. So we know each other pretty well, and while we’ve each grown a lot, we have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Good Day Sunshine doesn’t scratch the surface 😉 She just took this and I figured what better outfit to introduce her to you in…

^ Awesome photo @Matt Busby – and really really hoping it all works out well for the two of you!!
I’m assuming the shirt was a gift – or do we have another fan to add to the ranks?? 🙂

She was a fan when we met, over a decade ago 🙂 In fact I had sort of forgotten In My Life until she mentioned it was one of her faves – of course I immediately fell in love with it all over again (and now is about my 4th favorite). Her taste in music is almost a perfect match with mine! That was one of the things we first clicked on and chatted about when we met.
Ty for the well wishes and same to you guys, I check here first thing every time I get logged in to see if HKL’s visa came through 🙂

My dad, a philosopher wannabe, often engaged me in discussion about such existential topics. The times he wasn’t totally drunk are among my favorite childhood memories – when he was, he would argue in circles, and it was quite frustrating because I’d win the argument but he’d go back to a premise I’d already refuted.
Hi @Matt Busby , I just saw your good news! Have a safe drive and best wishes for your new life. It will be fun if she wants to join the forum, then there will be 2 FAB couples to follow.
I wanted to mention something to you regarding this post. My dad was a workaholic and was truly never around. I’m sure he had no idea what grade I was in and was probably taken by surprise when HS graduation arrived. This wasn’t that unusual in the 1950-60s as my mom didn’t work and was home 24/7. I had several friends who had alcoholic dads and I was so jealous because they were always home. All these years I’ve let the assumption live in my mind that my friends had it so much better than me. Your post gave me pause to rethink my relationship and perhaps ease up a little (sadly in memory only).

Great news @trcanberra – it will feel great to get out from under, I’m sure. I feel your pain about getting rid of “stuff” as I am a card carrying pack rat. Whenever we move (and we’ve done so a lot!!), I am temporarily cured of my pack rattiness once I am reminded that most moving companies charge by weight. We usually donate everything to a worthy cause and then deduct it from our taxes. Yard sales are for chumps. Anyway – best of luck.
@Matt Busby – wow! Congrats on the reconciliation. Very happy for you and Doris Day (?).

Thanks, but you may have to wait a week or three. Immigration told us that she needs to have her fingerprints taken first – she will be getting them done on Friday – then they will start the actual processing of the application.
As an aside, I remember back when fingerprints were reserved for criminals – this obsession with identifying and tracking everyone all the time is one of the things I am starting to dislike about the modern world.

Agreed – and the fact that even if cell phone is powered off they can still track it…and the fact that within 10 years, you won’t be able to move a foot in any big city without being on camera…
I guess there are advantages and disadvantages. Like the cops being caught abusing people is a huge plus thanks to cameras. I’m not so sure the fact that in the last two years I’ve seen 3 people shot to death, on camera, the real thing, is an advantage though…they try to keep that footage undercover but it often slips out, unless the cop cameras are the only ones that recorded it.

“and the fact that even if cell phone is powered off they can still track it.:
The police seized my brother’s phone recently as “evidence” for a speeding infringement – they can apparently work out the time it takes to move from one signal tower to another. He was without it for a week – bad luck for him that it is essential to his business.
Honestly – modern life!

I personally believe that the disadvantages FAR outweigh the advantages. It reminds me of the spurious defense that the USA has for torturing people – “oh, we MIGHT catch some bad guys”.

Funny! I did the same thing when I showed it to Zag for the first time. After about the 15th pause, I got the stink-eye and the “Really?. We are only 5 minutes into it”.

Anthology is a must-have, enjoy the series @Ahhh Girl. The first time is definitely the best, but each subsequent time you pick up a few more little things 🙂
On the topic of what’s going on in my life today, my bridge partner Neil, who is big in the local Jewish group, was picked to escort their guest for the opening event in their season (mostly book signings and stuff). We picked up Steve Katz (founding member and rhythm guitar player of Blood Sweat & Tears) at the airport, had lunch, dropped him off at the hotel, and am about to leave for the show. It’s just him and a Taylor acoustic, he kinda freaked because he had to check it on his first flight and it’s in a soft case, but it’s ok. He’s written a book about his experiences, and will be playing his songs (he only sang lead on one BS&T song and will not be performing any of them), and alternating telling stories. At lunch he told me (he grew up in NYC) that he would go down to the Village at 16 (would have been about ’61-’62), and take guitar lessons from dude who had Bobbie Dylan crashing on his couch! Check out The Blues Project on youtube, his pre-BS&T band, if you like early blues/jazz/rock fusion. They were hot.
He’s the only famous person I’ve ever met other than Jimmy & Roslyn Carter who made a campaign stop at my high school on his failed 1980 re-election campaign, and I just got to shake their hands and say “Hi” in a receiving line. He’s super nice and a real regular guy (and a neighbor of 92yo Henry Kissinger) and the conversation only touched on music occasionally, he asked both Neil and myself about our families, he supports my presidential candidate of choice (#feelthebern), and we had a great time.
Finally, I’d like to add my voice to those praising this site. I knew more than anyone I know about the Beatles when I arrived here, and very quickly learned how little I actually knew, embarassing myself on several of my early posts (and still doing it sometimes)! But that’s how ya learn, and I am so appreciative to the patient corrections to my errors, and so many other treasures I find here that are unrelated to my erroneous posts! I don’t know if my girl will join the forum or not – but she did say she’d acquired 3 new Beatles shirts in the 6 years we’ve been apart 🙂 She also hinted that I’d be getting one for Christmas 😀 All I have is one with the green Apple logo, and Paul and Ringo concert tees. I’m wearing Ringo to the show tonight.

Wow, that’s so cool! Besides his own illustrious career he has several connections to the Fabs. His group The Blues Project played after Ravi Shankar at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Of course Ravi taught George to play the sitar as well as becoming a spiritual mentor. In 1972 Steve was in a group called American Flyer. The producer of their first album was George Martin.

Once again I’m living @HongKongLady’s life vicariously – but as she’s not awake yet – what the heck!
Today is B-day!!
When biometrics are taken for the tourist visa application – once they are done we press the big red button and hope for the best!!!
With any luck HKL and trc (I hope I have the capitalisation correct) will be meeting up in Oz in early December 🙂

He told both those stories at the show 🙂 He said it was a drizzle at Monterey and as soon as Ravi played the first note the sun came out 🙂 He also said he was on the stage when Janis did Ball & Chain. He said Woodstock was a bummer though.
He said when Martin was producing the album, he kept following him around asking how they did this and that Beatles effect. George finally told him to “Get off my back” lol.
His guitar work was both beautiful and skillful. In particular, he plucked some very interesting rhythms out – I think I caught a couple 6:5 bars in one song.

Tomorrow I have a quite important English oral exam, and I only know two things: my partner will be a total stranger, and I only have the first half sorted out. I don’t really know how to feel about having to do the exam with someone I don’t know, in one hand it’s bad because it’ll probably just make me more nervous, but in the other, If it was with one of my classmates I’d probably be shyer (let’s say my classmates are not my very best friends). Though, with the luck I have for tests and these kind of things, I know I’ll be fine, and even If it doesn’t go very well, the written one in December is more important, and that’s what I’m good at.
And totally unrelated to that, in February I might go to see the Rolling Stones.

Wow how does a partnered exam work? Good luck!
See the Stones at all costs. They were amazing when I saw them (granted it was 35 years ago) but I know someone who saw them this summer and she said they’re still awesome – played as long as Paul does! And you won’t get a lot of chances to see rock and roll history in your life – that’s the attitude I’ve always taken, and I’ve ended up seeing a lot of truly great shows – don’t regret a penny I’ve spent or a misadventure I’ve had along the way.
