On the subject of laptops, someone came over to my desk at work on Friday and said, “Joe, that old PC laptop looks ancient. Do you want a new one?”
“Well if you’re offering. Um, can I have a Macbook Pro Retina?”
“OK then, I’ll get it ordered.”
This sort of thing never normally happens. I think I might have fallen through a wormhole into a parallel dimension.

I had heard of that concept, @Oudis, but I hadn’t heard that exact story.
The (essentially) same argument has been floated several times throughout history. Biocentrism deals with the concept of whether we are all part of some larger sentient being’s dream. It’s possible we are part of a bigger meta-universe (for example, each solar system is an atom in said meta-universe. However, astrophysics has progressed over the past 40 years to the point that believing that requires a significant leap of faith). I seem to remember something (from Hindu philosophy?) where everything is really a dream one of the gods is having (the one who grows a lotus flower in his bellybutton maybe ;). My dad, a philosopher wannabe, often engaged me in discussion about such existential topics. The times he wasn’t totally drunk are among my favorite childhood memories – when he was, he would argue in circles, and it was quite frustrating because I’d win the argument but he’d go back to a premise I’d already refuted.
Funny thing about my dad – his mother died of cancer before her 51st birthday. When confronted about his drinking, he would sometimes say it didn’t matter because he was going to die younger than his mother of some rare disease. As it turned out, he did just that, 5 months younger than she had been of a very rare autoimmune disorder (Progressive Systemic Sclerosis – complicated/accelerated by all the alcohol usage).

Which case do I want for my new laptop?
This one- you can look at their pretty faces all day, nothing bad about that at all, at all.
I finally found out that I didn’t get a part in ‘Guys and Dolls’, the c*nts (pardon me) never got back to me, I had to find out from a Facebook post, despite the fact I gave them my telephone number & email… that’s just rude.

Yeah. The general rule is if you dont hear back then you havent gotten the position tho some organisations do let you know. It sucks tho and stinks of bad manners; if you can take the time to attend the audition, interview etc then surely they can respond with a courtesy reply saying thanks but we went with another.

Wow – has it really been 2 weeks since I last posted? I’ve been on a not-really-self-imposed-but-more-like-accidentally-on-purpose sabbatical from all things Internet. As I told my Mod/Admin cohorts earlier, I hadn’t realized how long it had been since I had logged on outside of the office for any reason – not even personal email. When I thought of firing up the laptop, I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. How liberating!!!!!!!!! I honestly don’t know how people go through life with technology on their hip. Anyway, here are some items of note from my life recently.
During the last weekend of August I drove home to Upstate New York for a visit with my family. While there, I drove my brother along with his wife and two kids to the Woodstock Museum. What a treat!! The museum itself was well worth the price of admission (only $15 USD). The many exhibits (audio, visual, short films, etc…) were very well laid out and informative. I will definitely go back sometime with Zag. The most wonderful part of all was being able to walk the field on Yasgur’s Farm where the event actually took place. It is all well preserved. Walking down the grassy hill in my bare feet sent chills all the way up my spine. At the bottom of the hill, my brother and I stood where the stage would have been. We stood there for some time not saying a word. I’ll admit, I wiped away more than one tear – I don’t even know which emotion caused them to be there (a few different ones, I suppose), but there they were. Looking up the hill to where the crowd would have been, it was difficult to imagine 4 to 5 hundred thousand people covering it.
It was also very difficult to comprehend how that many people got there in the first place. The location is very remote and it would have been even more so back in 1969. For someone like me who absolutely loves the music from that era and most of the acts who performed at Woodstock, this was almost a religious experience; one I will never forget. Ooh – almost forgot – on the drive down to the museum (about 2 and a half hours) I was playing an iPod playlist in shuffle mode with over 600 songs on it. As we got closer to our destination, the iPod started playing songs solely from artists who performed at Woodstock. In fact the last 5 songs before arriving were from Jimi Hendrix, The Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Band and CSN (yes, it was the song ‘Woodstock’, written by Joni Mitchell). I called it a “Woodstockley Moment”.
The following week, I was in Texas on business for less than a day. On September 1, I flew into Dallas at 11:30, went to a 1PM meeting until about 5. A few of us went out for dinner and drinks afterward and the next morning I flew home. It was fun seeing co-workers from all over the country that I had not seen in a while. Dinner and drinks after was nice. But, flying across the country for a 4 hour meeting seemed odd. To top it off, I caught some type of creeping crud virus – probably from the plane travel – and am just now getting over it. Why are people so eager to share their germs?
The following weekend was Labor Day weekend. It was very relaxing – grilling meals, drinking cold beer, watching baseball on TV and other American summer pastimes. The weather was spectacular and we had absolutely no commitments to worry about. It wasn’t until sometime late Sunday that I started feeling the aforementioned creeping crud virus coming on. Up until that point, it was a stellar weekend.
Since then, it’s been mostly recovering from being sick and going to bed early after work. Speaking of work – Pope Francis is staying at a seminary that is only 4 miles from our office when he gets into Philadelphia on Friday. Traffic all over the city is going to be a nightmare with road closings and security measures being taken. As a result, our office is closing early Friday afternoon and will be closed all day Monday. He should pop in more often.
While it was great to be away from technology for a while (highly recommended), it’s good to be back on the Forum.

Thanks. I’m not sure if the Yasgur family still owns land in the area. The bowl shaped site of the festival, however, remains wonderfully intact. By the grace of Grace Slick, nobody has built a housing development on it with nothing but a cheesey plaque to mark the occasion.
If you ever get up that way, it is well worth the time to visit. I will definitely be going back.

I strongly considered contacting you and @Expert Textpert , but I wasn’t going to be there very long at all – not even 24 hours. Besides, I’d like our first time to be special.

I’ve been given painkillers for my knee as when it gets bad no amount of paracetamol stops it. Was damn painful for almost 3 consecutive days from last Saturday. Cant be good when one knee is hard and firm and the other is soft and scrunchy.

Final Open House tonight before tomorrow’s auction.
Interest has been rather minimal to date so unless something unusual happens I expect it to be passed-in tomorrow and go on the open market.
Still, I guess there is a chance it will sell – so here’s hoping.
The other (selling at a huge loss) house settles on Friday so that will be one major financial liability off my mind.
