A car has mown down several people in Melbourne’s CBD today, injuring 14, several critically. This is the second time this year – someone did the same thing, only a few blocks away, in January this year. My thoughts are with everyone effected, and I hope our other Melbourne ‘Biblers are ok.

That is very sad. This may piss some car lovers off but I think we need to restrict who can buy a car to make sure that no one who would be unable to buy a gun if we had moderate gun control in place could buy a car because it seems like there’s a lot of these incidents where terrorists use cars.
I think instead of using all of our power to try to ban or restrict guns, bombs, and (very stupidly IMO) knives we should instead use some of that focus to restrict cars because getting hit by an 18 wheeler can easily kill you just like a bullet to the head and even getting hit by your average car will do more damage then being stabbed in the hand with a pocket knife. A good example is how if you commit a crime that makes you spend more than a year in prison then you can’t buy a gun but on the contrary, vehicular manslaughter will only get your driver’s license suspended instead of revoked.
In this case, if the Australian government was smart enough to think that not everyone should be able to buy cars then this could’ve been prevented. But this isn’t a stab at Australia though, every country is the same when it comes to car control, here’s a good article to read.

Cars aren’t made to kill people DO. They aren’t designed as a weapon but as a transport vehicle.
Guns, and bombs are specifically made to kill, injure, or destroy.
Knifes are difficult to define as every kitchen needs a good knife so trying to control their sale is tricky.
To say that we should focus more on car control than gun, and bomb control is just pure stupid.

Woah there ASJ, you got the message all wrong. I think car control is just as important as gun and bomb control. I would never be stupid enough to suggest that we focus more on restricting car use than the use of a firearm or an explosive.

Oh god. Do we have to drag this subject out again? I’d rather see us debate the Ahhhs again. It’s always the same few people commenting on guns and gun control and they’ve already made their opinions quite clear.
This tragedy had nothing to do with guns. Let’s please stick to what just happened, because it seems disrespectful to make this about guns.
My thoughts are with those affected.

Sorry about that, I was trying to talk about how I think this is a reason why we need to restrict car use and I made an analogy that I shouldn’t have. I will cease discussing gun control but hopefully you don’t mind if we discuss car control since it relates to this incident. RIP to all of those who died in this incident.

So many dying each day because of terrible crimes like this one. May they all rest in peace.
I sincerely hope that someday I will be able to do more against it than just saying those words again and again.

Yet another mass shooting in the US. 1 dead and at least 50 injured at a school in Parkland, Florida. Shooter still on the loose.
The ugly part of the American Dream that they refuse to deal with because of vested interests and a gun lobby that buys political influence rears it head again. It is sad that so many Americans want to cling on to their guns while they throw their hands up in mock horror at the cost in lives that the lack of gun control inevitably lead to.
Better news is that Jacob Zuma has resigned as President of South Africa at the last possible minute, with the ANC bringing forward a no confidence vote against him tomorrow. Let us hope that Cyril Ramaphosa does a better job and actually stamps out the corruption that has so damaged progress in the country.

What’s wrong with the UK, @Ahhh Girl?
On a more serious and tragic note, the death toll has reached 17, with the 18-year-old shooter in custody.

That’s awful news.
You’d be granted asylum here, @Ahhh Girl, because you have relevant paperwork (visa, passport etc), and would probably be coming on a plane.

And it’s the 8th school shooting so far THIS YEAR! Seven weeks into the year, and already 8 school shootings. It says something about the state and indifference of the US that only when the fatalities are high do they make the headlines beyond a blink.

Nothing will change in the US as its now pretty much accepted that shootings will happen and there will be the loss of life. A few token words of sympathy will be spoken by those with the power to bring change but they won’t do anything and the country will lapse into even deeper apathy with the same pathetic arguments drawn out in cycles.
Screw living there.

When I saw the news, my immediate concern was for the safety of my many friends and co-workers who live in Florida. When I realized that no one I know lives in that area, I was only marginally relieved but still very much sick to my stomach. Every time there is any mass shooting, car bombing, mowing down of pedestrians with a vehicle, etc… in any country, a little piece of me dies inside. I abhor violence in any shape or form. It sickens me even more when I realize that the next act of violence could happen outside my door or yours.
What makes it worse is when the broad-brush finger pointing begins. I almost did not click on the link for this thread because I knew what I was going to find. Unfortunately, I was right.

I sincerely hope you are both referring to the b******s at the NRA and the cowardly politicians on their payroll. If you are referring to the US as a whole being indifferent or accepting, then shame on you and your utterly clueless thoughts.

At least you show some level of awareness by realizing that people who have more money than God are responsible for the lack of much needed gun control. Sadly, firearms is a multi gazillion dollar industry. This means that, while they are in the minority, they have the most money. The majority of the US – people like my wife and me – that hate this kind of violence and cannot understand the need to own assault weapons can scream, cry, lobby the government, etc… all we want – and we do. But it makes no impression upon those in power who are having their pockets stuffed. That sucks to no end. On top of that, we have to endure clueless people all over the world who point their “holier than thou” fingers and “tsk-tsk” the entire US with a broad s**t-stained brush.

I am so deeply offended by that remark. How dare you?! The country in which I live is filled with incredibly kind, decent, loving people – like my wife and me and everyone I enjoy associating with. We come to the aid of friends, neighbors and in most cases, total strangers. This happens every day, not just in times of crisis. It has been written in many journals, that don’t make sensational headlines, that the US is more charitable (money and sweat) by leaps and bounds than any other country on this planet – including yours. One shining example of this resides within the company for which my wife and and I work. Every year, we raise millions (internationally) for all sorts of charitable organizations via a campaign that makes it easy through payroll deductions. The company then matches those contributions, doubling them. It’s not just money either. For a two-week period every May, our employees are given the opportunity to get out of the office and donate time, effort, sweat and tears for organizations that are dear to our hearts. I could tell you countless heartwarming stories, but they don’t make the headlines. When there are horrible events that happen in other countries, our company president will issue an internal email letting everyone know how we are reaching out and how individual employees can help. I am so proud to work for this US-based company. Again, this is just one example. This happens all over the US every single day. But these events hardly ever make the sensational headlines you seem to cite as gospel. If something awful does happen in any country – including yours – I would bet my house that we would be at your side with whatever was needed. That is who we are. I am very proud of my country and the people who live here; many of which came here to get away from conditions in their countries – including yours – that were worse than what they experience here. If you are going to base your prejudiced thoughts on what you hear on the news – acts of the minority – that’s on you, not us.
Kicking someone when they are down is a poor character trait. Shame on both of you.

If people in a country don’t take more action than just petitioning the government when something is going really wrong, are the people of that country part of the problem too? Are they sheeple?
