Today, in passing, I heard some person on the radio (NPR or BBC) saying that China backing North Korea isn’t a “real” thing. It’s a bluff, hoax, whatever you want to call it. I haven’t had time to follow up. Any thoughts/insight?
Whilst they are still allies, I’d say that China has been straying away from it’s close relationship with North Korea for many years now. During the height of the Cold War they were of course ideological allies but the world has moved on from then – North Korea is basically just a relic of those times. China on the otherhand have embraced the global community (especially the West) and have been attempting to change their country for the better as a result. I think a good example of when this was symbolised was with the nuclear tests that North Korea conducted recently, as China was very firm on warning the North Korean government about the negative implications it would have. This simply wouldn’t have happened during the Cold War.
Based on this I think that China could play a very important role in influencing change in North Korea. They rely on China so much for things like aid and food that China can effectively pull the plug on North Korea at any time. Eitherway it’ll be interesting to see what happens but I think that change is basically inevitable.

While I agree with much said in the above posts, I believe both miss the strategic importance of North Korea to China.
There are a lot of tensions in the Pacific at the moment, with disputes between China and Japan over control of territory and oil-drilling. NK is very publicly against Japan, and it is known that Japan views NK as a bigger military threat to itself than China. China has spent decades working on its international image, and could only damage it in the case of any confrontation with Japan, just as Russia did with its actions in Ukraine and its annexation of Crimea. It is, therefore, useful for China to be able to remind Japan that they can barely control NK, and not to blame them if NK fires a few missiles in Japan’s direction. This gives Japan every reason to think carefully about its responses to Chinese moves.
Then there is the fact that NK shares a border with China. It acts as a buffer between China and the US. Were NK to collapse resulting in a reunified Korea, this would leave China with a US-backed country right at its border, which is the last thing it wants, in much the same way as Russia objects to the expansion of NATO towards its borders (which was one of the main reasons behind the Ukraine situation).
Nor does China want a huge influx of refugees flooding across the border in the event of a military confrontation between North and South Korea.
For China, NK is the embarrassing relation that you don’t want to admit to, but has their uses.

I read more about Otto and it was a really bad idea to steal a poster in that country.
Norrh Korea is known for its laws about anything to do with the dear leader.
He took a trip to the country, should be aware of the rules.

His treatment was awful however being an American is reason enough for the rulers to be watching you closely so doing anything viewed as even slightly irksome towards their Beloved, or could be in any way be viewed as an insult to their ways of living, is truly stupid. You’ve got more chance of getting out of a lion cage alive after waiting till a lion is hungry and smearing yourself in BBQ sauce then getting off after breaking a North Korea rule.

Sadly, this is true in more countries than just North Korea.

Some countries don’t like you chewing chewing gum. It’s their country so if you go visiting and break the rules you can expect to be punished, even if the punishment is wrong in our Western eyes.

Most people who tour will make it out of the country so chance of getting out is good for tourists.
If you are going to go to North Korea as a torist, you should know going in not to do something against the law.
And like you said “It’s their country so if you go visiting and break the rules you can expect to be punished, even if the punishment is wrong in our Western eyes. “

Imagine was used during Brexit talks. https://www.theguardian.com/po…..ain-brexit
Donald Tusk:
Some of my British friends have even asked me whether Brexit could be reversed, and whether I could imagine an outcome where the UK stays part of the EU.
I told them that in fact the European Union was built on dreams that seemed impossible to achieve. So, who knows? You may say I’m a dreamer, but I am not the only one.
Then later on the article
“I am not a dreamer and I am not the only one,” Belgium’s prime minister, Charles Michel said, in a deliberate echo of Tusk’s words. “I consider that we have to respect the choice of the UK and we will see how it is possible to keep smart cooperation on the different issues, on development, on trade but also on security.”

Five blocks of flats being evacuated in Camden because of possible fire risk in the wake of the Grenfell tower fire.
161 flats in each block, around 4000 people to temporarily rehome while work is carried out. And this could be just the beginning.

Yeah I have to agree that it was a bad idea to try and steal a poster. We westerners have this idea that our way of life goes anywhere but if you go to a country you should always abide by their rules, just the same as we expect foreigners to In ours.

I like that. Most amusing. See, you can find funny stuff if you make the effort.
60 tower blocks have so far had their cladding tested for fire resistance. All have failed.
Now, it may just be that the first tests have been done to blocks of more concern, or it may be that a major social housing scandal is being exposed. It is also spreading to other buildings like schools and hospitals.

Whilst I would have voted labour in this here election if I was old enough (Corbyn is the man), I don’t think it’s really fair for people to be blaming May for all of this, as if she personally disabled the fire alarms or something. Obviously the Tory underfunding for literally everything isn’t doing much good but it’s not solely the fault of the Maybot.

However, you do have the fact that May’s Government were about to introduce new fire safety rules for schools that were about cost-cutting, which have now been abandoned.
You also have the fact that the Government have been sitting on a report about new fire recommendations; also that they didn’t pass into law any of the coroner’s recommendations from the last tower block fire.
You add onto the austerity cuts that have left local councils unable to deal with such large scale events as they no longer have the staff, and a Fire Brigade that no longer has the staff to do the fire inspections, seeing them often put out to private contractors, who have a vested interest in giving their employer the result they want.
Yes, it dates back, but Governments May has been a part of or headed haven’t helped, they just added to the downward slide.

It’s horrific how long MP’s and those in power/on Boards have sat and delayed or simply ignored calls for improvements on fire safety in tower blocks where in the recommendations there are warnings that if ignored a fire disaster would happen. To see how many high rises are being found to be unsafe is incredible.
Every single building so far, 75 in total, have failed the safety tests.

In 2015 I supported the Tories with austerity because I thought ‘hey, they’ve started now, we might as well let them finish the job.’ Well now it’s clear now that austerity is a failure, was a mistake and will be a regret. My school is unable to offer the subjects students want to take, and students have to buy textbooks and exercise books themselves. In hospitals you have to wait hours for service because the nurses are working double hours. And now people are literally dying because of Tory underfunding to councils. I’ve change my mind, starvation is never the way to heal an economy.

Yesterday , the German parliament has voted in favour of the legalisation of same-sex marriages. It looks as if gay couples will finally be given the right to marry just as heterosexuals do in the near future unless the federal court finds a paragraph in the constitution which would define marriage as a bond between heterosexuals. Then there would have to be another vote.
I profoundly hope the latter will not be the case and the right to marry will become reality for everyone!
