2016 hasn’t just been the year of deaths, it has been the year of earthquakes, if you’ll remember. Now a 7.6 one in Chile. A 7.9 one in Papua New Guinea a couple of weeks ago. a 7.3 one in Ecuador earlier this year. Numerous others I’ve since forgotten the details about. 2016, you suck!!

You can say those things about every year, so your generalizations do nothing to make anything better or brighter. Speaking factually, 2016 has been rough for some, while others apparently were not affected as much. It depends on your perspective – here is mine.
At my stage in life, the death of long time favorites/heroes is more than just an eventuality. With each passing year, it is becoming my reality. A list of favorites who passed away this year include, but are not limited to George Martin, David Bowie, John Glenn, Florence Henderson, Greg Lake, Gene Wilder, Jack Reilly (a minor celeb, but still a favorite), Garry Marshall, Muhammad Ali, Alan Young (Wilbur!), Doris Roberts, George Kennedy, Glenn Frye, and many more.
On a personal level, my best friend almost passed away and just last week went though major surgery to have her thyroid removed as it had been enlarged to a dangerous level – thankfully no cancer for her. Speaking of her, you may recall my mentioning recently that her 16 year old nephew died in his sleep. What I did not mention is that her mother-in-law passed away just days before her nephew. We are very close – her pain is my pain. During the week before Christmas, my brother’s dog that was fighting off ill effects from Lyme disease finally succumbed after outliving the “experts” prognosis of 6 months to live. He lived for 18 months before his body finally had enough. Although we all knew it was coming, our family was devastated. Especially since it happened so close to Christmas. I miss that little dog terribly.
We have had Forum members go through scary bouts of bad health, while another passed away. It seems like virtually every week, more bad news is laid upon me. It’s getting to the point where I cringe when the phone rings or there is a new post in the Rest In Peace thread. Don’t get me started on the ridiculousness of the elections.
In fairness, some positive things did happen. But they were far too few to outweigh the bad. In short, 2016 has been the worst year in recent memory and I will not apologize for saying it.

Here are some specifics.
69. In June, a new survey showed that the ozone hole has shrunk by more than 3.9 million square kilometres since 2006. Scientists now think it will now be fully healed by 2050. Sydney Morning Herald
60. Following the end of conflict in Colombia in 2016, all of the war in the world is now limited to an arc that contains less than a sixth of the world’s population. Associated Press
26. World hunger reached its lowest point in 25 years. New York Times
I tend not to see a year as worst or best they just are to me.

Normally, so do I. But this year grabbed my full attention by the short and curlies. There were some very positive things that happened globally – thanks for posting that link.
Closer to home, however…to 2016. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.

The UK are leaving the Single Market and the SNP are not amused as evident in Nicola Sturgeon’s reaction.
The first minister added: “It seems the Westminster Tory government now think they can do anything to Scotland and get away with it. They must start to understand how wrong they are.
“The UK government cannot be allowed to take us out of the EU and the single market, regardless of the impact on our economy, jobs, living standards and our reputation as an open, tolerant country, without Scotland having the ability to choose between that and a different future.
“With her comments today, the prime minister has only succeeded in making that choice more likely.”
I think a second referendum is highly likely and I think if it does Scotland will be offski.
I do agree that for a good while the UK Government have been blindly ignoring Scotland’s voice and it’s going to come back and haunt them, Labour did it and look what happened there.

Decades after it was written, never seemed more apt…
I am sorry to our US members that support him, but your President makes me puke…
The lowest day in the history of American democracy…
