The announcement didnt go very well tho. You have to feel sorry for Miss Columbia.
By the way why is there a Miss Universe and a Miss World? Unless every being in the entire universe is allowed to enter Miss Universe (and since none have are they also against the contest – not that I am) then surely they are the same.

As with anything where the USA gets involved monetarily there are competing bodies and competing tournaments (look how many different boxing federations there are). Free markets, competition and all that.

It’s like when the US have their “World Series” in baseball, and the only teams in it are American. No sport in any other country would be so arrogant as to call a purely domestic competition the “World Series”.

Miss Universe is for all people of the universe. Their could be some human looking aliens.
Why only people? If Miss Universe why cant a female alien from Mercury enter or even from some far off planet in another galaxy? For all we know all that needs to happen for us to be visited by an extra-terrestrial is for them to be allowed to participate.
Maybe there really is a rather hot Gelf out there.

Offline The simple reason is that they haven’t been able to get to us. Even if you go at light speed, it takes around 6 light hours for the sun to get to Pluto an the nearest star is about 4.6 light years away so the only aliens are some ancient aliens from Venus that escaped before their planet suffered from a runaway green house effect.

Maybe they have the technology and ability to get to us, set out million of years ago and just stopped off on Pluto for a nice burger (or whatever they eat) when they saw that their Queen couldn’t participate in Miss Universe and so decided to go to Jupiter instead.

@Zig Rugby, football (soccer), and cricket were all primarily UK sports when their first domestic competitions were set up in the UK. None of our domestic competitions were ever called “World” competitions.
And, yes, a bunch of corrupt self-aggrandising individuals took control of world football (soccer), and you won’t find a single football (soccer) fan on this forum, or anywhere else, who isn’t madly grateful and in love with the American legal authorities for their huge contribution in beginning to tear down the house of cards that is FIFA. But then it should be remembered that the started investigations based on accusations of corruption made in the British media, particularly The Times, and thought, “Hmmm, some of these crooked happened here, involved our banks, we better look at this”.
Really, it is so ironic that a country that barely understands football (soccer) was the country that actually took the accusations seriously. It’s a matter of disgrace and shame that the legal authorities in the big football (soccer) nations spent so long avoiding the corruption.
As I said, you cannot understand how grateful football (soccer) fans around the world are to your legal authorities.
None of that has anything to do with those who started baseball in America (which is really the English female sport of rounders played by men) calling their competition the “World Series”, while the first Football Association (English) called their competition the FA Cup.

Offline For years there has been this sense of untouchability (thats probably not a word) when it came to FIFA and those in charge. Rumours circulated and occasionally articles surfaced but for whatever reason no-one ever looked deeper or did anything about it (no doubt money and favours were involved in some/many instances).

Oh, we understand it just fine. We just suck at it because our country’s best athletes don’t play it. Instead, our top performers play American football, baseball, basketball and hockey. Don’t mistake our indifference to soccer as a lack of understanding.
To answer your first assertion of baseball’s arrogance, I educate you thusly. Back in the early to mid 1880’s the original baseball championship series was referred to as The World’s Series. Some historians say it was because nobody else in the world played the game – a few others (this version is most disputed) say it was named after the newspaper The New York World. Eventually, the apostrophe and the “s” were dropped and it was then called The World Series. No matter what, I hardly think arrogance had anything to do with it. That is a tad over the top.
