Well, why ever not? After all, history is full of examples of groups being picked out for unequal treatment under the law on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexuality or beliefs turning out hunky-dory for all.
I mean, there’s Hitler and the Jews… Oops! Wait . Not the best example.
There’s white South Africa and it’s treatment of it’s black population… Sorry! Another not so good one. I’ll get there though…
The Catholics and the Protestants…
The Protestants and the Catholics…
Europe and virtually every native population they encountered around the world…
Special mention going to their treatment of population of Africa sold into slavery…
The Israelis and the Palestinians…
McCarthy’s America and the Communists…
There’s African Christian countries currently jailing and condemning to death homosexuals…Mmm, it’s trickier than I thought to find good examples of where it’s been good…
Hmm, how do you spot a Muslim? I mean, the ones you’d really want to stop, they’ve been known to lie about things. How do you tell the difference between secular, Christian, Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, Buddist, etc.?
Will I need to provide documentation to prove that I am not, have not been, and will never be a practising Muslim? What if my parents are Muslims?
Keep up the two wrongs make a right analogies, look up the US’ first treaty…..learn how to spell ‘Buddhists’ and consider that you only defeat the evils you so predictably example, (as Thomas Jefferson understood), by confronting them……….
….I’m not making a direct comparison here, but it’s likely that well-intentioned devotees, like yourself, of the limp, downright daffy pontifications of PC thought which I consider, (because it so often denies or leaves unspoken a truth), the most pernicious and dangerous doctrine since communism and fascism…… would certainly have written Churchill off and consigned him to the loony-bin.
……..Clutch at those pearls, brew-up another cuppa, calm down and have a Merry Christmas………While it’s still allowed.

@Wigwam You misunderstand me in many ways. While I disagree with Trump over distasteful and, ultimately, unworkable silly suggestions about how to respond to things as they are and keep populations safe, I’m not someone who doesn’t believe that terrorists should not be confronted.
I don’t believe you confront terrorists by discriminating against a group they might hide within. To implement such an order, America would need to break several parts of its constitution. It would also need to break multiple international agreements. The only thing that could change would be a growing resentment of America and the West from the Muslim community within it. Here’s something to think about, Labour’s next mayoral candidate for London, Sadiq Khan, is a Muslim. Are you suggesting that America will be safer from terrorism for banning Labour’s next London mayor from its shores?
And, in reality, the truth is that any terrorist posing a serious threat to America, would probably be entering the country under an assumed identity that denied their beliefs. How do you actually make such a stupid idea work?
And what do I mean by confronting terrorists? In the case of these particular scum, that would involve boots on the ground.
I remember Bono hours after the Enniskillen bombing saying, something like, “They talk about the glory of dying for the Revolution . They don’t talk about the glory of killing for the Revolution that the majority of people in my country don’t want…”
* [edit] paragraphs I missed about here… (see next post)
Something like that.
My point? Do I even have a point? I must have had a point to make when I wandered in here. I must have!!!! I know it’s here somewhere! It must be! It must be!
You do not confront these dangerous ideologies with walls and internment (which would be the next logical step, and already discussed by Trump). You just create more converts as they see themselves treated unfairly.
Just not a great idea, imo. Confront the terrorists, put boots on the ground, but don’t tar innocent people with the same stain as scum.

But you do not assume every Muslim is an extremist, no more than every person who calls themself an American Christian is an abortion clinic bomber.

@ewe2 , you should be sued for plagiarism because I looked up “Donald Trump” in the encyclopedia and both of those sentences are in his description.
Anyone who believes Trump really wants to ban any further immigration of Muslims into the US, please PM me. I own the rights to the Statue of Liberty and will gladly sell the dear old girl to the highest bidder.
The guy is a con man simply trying to garner approval and/or votes from the ignorant and vengeful. Debating the pros and cons of his ideas on this is moot.

Heh I promise I didn’t even look it up, it’s just what I think. Trump makes these statements and promises because they’re easy. Easy to say, easy to hear and completely useless and in fact counter-effective. Anyone with half a brain or basic history knowledge knows how useless it is and how dangerous. But these people feel immune to any consequence, and by and large will remain immune, which is why they also never learn from experience. Everyone else has to learn, and learn fast.

Would it easier to let Trump speak for an hour and show himself to be the idiot that he is or is there a section of Americans who would really buy into what he says?
In the UK for a while UKIP with Nigel Farage was on the up in popularity and votes, he was exposed for the idiot he was the more airtime he was given and now they are on the decline. Same can be said for the BNP years ago.

Unfortunately the US is a good deal more polarized than the UK and there is a sizeable chunk of the Republican vote who will follow Trump and therefore can’t be ignored, no matter how idiotic or long a speech from him. There’s a big contrarian factor in it as well which plays on the underdog theme, something also true for UKIP which has had more success than is comfortable.
That said, if Trump wasn’t as religiously neutral as he’s played it, he would have even greater success, but the Christian Right are suspicious and would much rather have one of the more official GOP candidates in their pocket than him. But it hasn’t come to an outright choice for them or many others yet.

The saddest part, to me, is that there is no longer the want for either party to put forth the best person for the job. Instead, each party spews out the Ken or Barbie they feel would have the best chance of getting elected. My fear is that eventually they will throw up supermodels as candidates instead of real politicians. I can hear the campaign slogan now.

Redundant agreement there of course…… Trump will have scuppered his chances now…….and if not now, he will later.
I don’t want to get into how we deal with the radical muslim terrorist threat, (unless you want to) except to say we didn’t ban or even turn on all the Irish when we defeated the IRA.
But I repeat, I like Trump……..I see that he has two functions:
1- Make the other candidates look better.
2- Ask the questions many people want answers to that neither side of the aisle has the guts to ask.
If I was eligible to vote and forced to chose between Trump or that blatant liar HRC…….??? I’d er….? …….er?…..
………I’d vote to bring back the Monarchy….. We’ve got Charles, who’s been warming his arse on the Sub’s Bench for 60 odd years. The US could have him, he wouldn’t be missed. He wouldn’t be better but couldn’t be worse!……….. Could he?

Sometimes what someone says makes your eyes roll out your head and continue out the house and down the street. Ignoring everything else spoken be her, Michele Fiore, a Nevada Assemblywoman, has said in an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live that “a firearm in a Christmas box wrapped in a Christmas wrapping is a fabulous gift“. Not sure how I’d feign delight receiving that as a gift. Out of interest would it come with ammunition or would you have to buy them separately?
Michelle Fiore has made headlines for her family Christmas card (below) as she thinks guns get a bad press and deserve to be seen in a more positive light.

A political reporter from Boston responds to Trump in hilarious fashion.
From the article:
Following Donald Trump’s call for a nationwide ban on accepting Muslim immigrants, one local political writer started a petition on Change.org, calling for Trump to prove that he in not a Muslim.
David S. Bernstein, a writer for Boston magazine and WGBH, called on Trump Wednesday to prove his non-Muslim allegiance.
“Donald Trump says Muslims — including U.S. citizens traveling abroad — should not be allowed back into the United States,” Bernstein wrote. “Since he will reportedly travel abroad later this month, how do we know if it is safe to let him return? We need him to provide clear, positive evidence that he is not a Muslim.”
Love it.

Does Bernie Sanders have any hope of getting the Democrat nomination? I very much like what I’ve heard of him, but I’ve no idea what his level of popular support is, beyond certain online echo chambers like /r/sandersforpresident. It’d be good to hear forumites’ perspectives.

The latest polls (FWIW) show Hillary at about 55% and Bernie at 31%. The election is still 11 months away though – plenty of time for her to say something stupid, although maybe not at epic proportions like Trump.

Sanders has a lot of support from the public but Clinton has done a lot to rig the system in her favor. Also, the corporate-owned media does everything it can to downplay Sanders’ success. For instance, there was a TIME magazine poll to choose contestants for “person of the year.” Sanders won by a large margin but they put Trump, who barely got any votes, in his place.
