Though ignoring such shootings could only disguise the deep-rooted sickness America has in its relationship with guns. America has to be aware of the cost of them keeping an untrammelled 2nd amendment, without being prepared to accept the blood of every innocent victim of a legally held weapon that, in retrospect, they shake their heads at and say shouldn’t have been allowed to happen.

Shooting a constant camera at it makes people apathetic like “eh it happens so much who cares” cause of audience induced apathy. I think that the way the shootings are reported should change.

In what way? You cant blame the news for reporting the shootings. What else are they meant to do? Ignore it? Have it further down the schedule?
Maybe if American politicians had some backbone, forgot about the cash and influence the NRA hav,e and did something about legislation the number of occurrences would fall resulting in the news not having to report so many. And there will be another and another and another because nothing is being done to change it all.

Whatever we in the USA are doing now to address the problem sure doesn’t seem to be working. There is a wealth of evidence to suggest that shooters are inspired by the heinous acts of other psychopaths who decide to leave this world in a killing spree. President Obama is speaking right now about the fact that the USA is the only country in the world that doesn’t have common sense weapons control. He seems really pissed off. I like the example of Australia, which has been documented in this thread, as a direct and measured response to a massacre. Good for you, TRC. Why can’t we be more like the Aussies in just about every way?
I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

I’m not fully blaming but the news is a factor.

Most off these shootings are not done to get on the news, its for other reasons (normally revenge/settle a grudge), so whether or not the news channels do or dont report is immaterial to the shooters plans. Plus if they didnt it would still be all over social media like Facebook. More often than not nowadays the killers have posted their intentions online before they acted – it happened with this shooting in Oregon (where some cretins encouraged him on to the point of offering advice on how to carry out the killings).
Its far better to bring these events into the light and let the country and world see how it really is than try and shuffle them off into the corner so it doesnt look that bad.

I think that what makes people apathetic is having a political system where the ordinary voice, that would like to see stronger gun controls (67% of NRA members in a poll after Sandy Hook said gun controls should be tightened), is ignored by the pro-gun politicians and pro-gun lobbyists. And they are ignored by those politicians and pro-gun lobbyists because there are millions of dollars involved, and nearly all those dollars are being paid to those pro-gun politicians and pro-gun lobbyists by very rich arms manufacturers who obviously have no vested interests!

I disagree – these things shouldn’t be shoved under the carpet.

The number of those killed in the Oregon shootings is now at 9.
A couple of stats from elsewhere caught my eye.
A map of every shooting in the US where 4 or more people have been killed since 2013.
US Mass Shooting Facts
No. of mass shooting fatalities since 2013: 1,250
No. of mass shooting injuries since 2013: 3,599
No. of mass shootings in 2015 so far: 293
(Mass shooting is defined as a gun incident where four or more people are shot)

And a great example of some real batshit logic courtesy of Philip Van Cleave.

They have next to no one living there; and those that do are all too far away from one-another to be able to find enough people in the one place for a mass homicide?
The gun-toting loons there probably go to neighbouring states for their rampages.

Well, people are way up there in the causes of death of other people. Can be quite a high attrition rate when they own a stack of legal weapons.
But staying away from other people? Mmm, not sure…
A huge number of America’s gun victims are suicides… might be better if those spent more time with people, and talked about how they were feeling? You’ve got much more chance of surviving an overdose, or even a slashed wrist, then you have a bullet through the brain…
