The BBC report that

Scotland has more than 400 words and expressions for snow, according to a project to compile a Scots thesaurus.

Academics have officially logged 421 terms – including “snaw” (snow), “sneesl” (to begin to rain or snow) and “skelf” (a large snowflake).

The study by the University of Glasgow is part of a project to compile the first Historical Thesaurus of Scots, which is being published online.

More at the BBC link.

The Historical Thesaurus of Scots, eh? I’d love to see how many words and expressions there are for “Apple Tat”. a-hard-days-night-ringo-14

To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

Ron Nasty said
We have had the first Shadow Cabinet resignation, two of the other three leadership candidates have said they will not will serve in a Corbyn Shadow Cabinet. Labour’s big beasts are starting to walk away.

I answered your second question, @meanmistermustard, about wanting Ed as party leader. I voted Labour last time with a heavy heart, knowing he had a good Shadow Cabinet. Whether Corbyn can build as strong a SC is to be seen. I think the chances are slim. I see much of their front benches fleeing to the backbenches to avoid complicity in Corbyn’s leadership. This is the worst disaster for Labour since Michael Foot.

From the Guardian

Leaving the Labour party to defect to the Liberal Democrats would be like swapping the Beatles for a Bananarama tribute band, according to Tom Watson.

The remarks from the new Labour deputy leader followed a suggestion by the Liberal Democrat leader, Tim Farron, that a number of Labour MPs had contacted him, distraught after Jeremy Corbyn’s landslide win.

“I don’t think anybody is seriously saying there’s defections … That would be like leaving the Beatles and joining a Bananarama tribute band,” said Watson, speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Monday. “I don’t see any Labour MPs, or serious Labour MPs, who are going to defect to go to Tim Farron’s party.”

Farron, also speaking on the Today programme, said Watson was flattering himself if he thought he could ever have been a member of the Beatles, though he added that there was nothing wrong with Bananarama.

More at the link but nothing Beatley.

I love Scots (as in the people) and Scots (as in the language/dialect < “dialect”, oh you better believe that’s a paddlin’ ASJ), it’s a brilliant language in itself, it’s a pity so few can understand it a-hard-days-night-john-6

As a fan of the “hawwwwkkkk” method of speaking, I do enjoy hearing Scots.

I was saddened to hear of so many people dying in a stampede in Saudi Arabia.

Then I read the Saudi Health Minister said it is “God ‘s will”.

So that means it’s okay then?

He also said it was an accident – but I don’t see how it could be if God planned it that way all along??

I suppose, @trcanberra, in that cack-handed way that religious people do, by saying it’s an accident you avoid the negligence lawsuits, and by saying it was “God ‘s will” that those who were killed or were injured by that accident you doubly avoid lawsuits. “Accident we couldn’t have avoided, but ‘God ‘s will’ that those were people, the dead and those with injuries (and life changing injuries in many instances) were there because it was a test of faith that “God ” wanted them to experience. The two-clause “Get Out of Jail Free” card!!!

I suppose they are saying its an accident but Gods will as he could have stopped it if he had wanted to.

So its Gods desire and will that folk get stamped to death?

“Ya” doesn’t really work from a librarian, @Ahhh Girl. If you ever got a student saying, “Ya know?” You’d be among the first to say, “It’s ‘you’…”

Yes, apparently.

Another shooting in the US. 10 people at least killed.

Seriously!! What bunch of nut jobs see these stories in the news and dont think “F**k it. Thats enough now. Screw what was written hundreds of years ago and lets get the changes done to try and stop more deaths occurring in the future.”?

How can any country look on at others and think “You cannot do that, we’ll stop it. Here we come!!” and do f**k all about whats happening in their own backyard?

Constantly reporting shootings doesn’t change anything since it becomes just a background event. Sometimes less is more.
