Another attack in France. Armed man shot and stabbed three people leaving them in seriously injured on a train between Amsterdam and Paris. Luckily he was overcome by two U.S marines.

We live in a world where sick b******s want to harm others for reasons that to the majority are senseless. Doesn’t help that most of the countries that could do something to stand up to the sick b******s sit around and discuss what they could do whilst defending what they are not doing. Dont know how many experts i’ve heard say air strikes are not enough to seriously impact on IS.

Apparently the two Americans heard him loading his guns in the toilet………and confronted him. Bloody heroes!!!
Once again Americans doing the fighting for the French.
Everyone in the US should feel proud today.
As for the scum they overcome……..I’d vote they introduce him to Madame Guillotine……..But he’ll probably end up with a few years in a cosy prison, a psychotherapist and a new council house.

Ah yes like when the French greatly helped America gain its independence, if it wasn’t for the French, America could still be under British rule!
While those marines are a credit to themselves and their nation, you can’t expect the French army/police to be patrolling every single train, bus, street in France to protect their citizens from potential attacks- it’s not feasible!

Is it too contrarian to say the world has always been like this? I think it probably always has been this way – we are just able to know about it more and know about it easier.

Yes perhaps I was being a bit harsh on the French. And I’m sure they had only the colonists interests at heart when they prised them away from the dammed British…….. But they are not generally known for their gratitude to the US….
I recall De’Gaul summoning the American representative of NATO and telling him he wanted every American soldier off of French soil ‘toute suit’……To which the reply was, ‘Does that include the 20,000 US servicemen buried here General?’
France has a problem……and so does the rest of Europe. You’re quite right that it’s not feasible to protect against every lone wolf attack. Charlie Hebdo…..The decapitation recently…..So I take back some of my knee-jerk criticism. In some ways France has shown more willingness to confront radical Islam that Britain has.
I’m wondering though if the presence of the two off duty soldiers was mere coincidence.
Whatever, it was it was lucky they were there.

“Is it too contrarian to say the world has always been like this? I think it probably always has been this way – we are just able to know about it more and know about it easier.”
While I think there has always been a lot of violence and crime, I think that these random acts of violence against groups of strangers are more frequent and more alarming. The world “felt” safer to travel in forty years ago – apart from the odd plane hijack – it feels less so these days. A lot of this seems attributable to events in the Middle East which have spread beyond those areas.

In regards to it being Americans on the train it shouldnt matter where they came from or what nationality, its that they did something to prevent an atrocity being carried out that should be the main focus point.
I doubt they were thinking that they were in France when it was happening and how that relates to world history.

Actually i think the train being in France……and full of French passengers…..It is worth noting that the three that took the initiative were presumably in the minority in that they were not French but from America and their bravery resolved the situation But I agree it’s secondary to the act of saving lives…..
However, I’m thinking that perhaps you would have wanted to know if the three had been Scottish…….And might have remarked upon it.
Whatever…..They are heroes. Full-stop!

Its natural and correct to remark upon where the three men came from but to take it the extent of “America saving France” is nonsense, it was three men stopping an armed man from unleashing hell on a train. Nationality doesnt come into it.

I feel it has to do with the fact that violent crimes get reported more now a days.

I’ve agreed I was a bit harsh on France……
Quote: ‘Yes perhaps I was being a bit harsh on the French.”. So there was no need for your 2nd comment.
.It’s not easy to crack jokes with so many PC sour pusses around. I’ll try to remember that in future!!!
However, as you persist and if we want to be pedantic…….I’ll now let my original, (what was intended as a flip comment), stand for you to refute:
‘Once again Americans doing the fighting for the French.’
Because at its simplest level that comment is based on two truths.
1. America and the Allies came to France’s rescue in WWI and needed to again in WWII. …..Fact.
2. This train, presumably full of French citizens was rescued from a bloodbath that would have put France into another distressed state of morning, (similar to Charlie Hebdo), by 3 Americans coming to their rescue…..again. Fact.
Although you equivocate as to the importance every news report I’ve read considers it a pertinent enough to mention the nationality of the rescuers…….Barack Obama has praised his countrymen….and quite rightly.
It’s inspirational and Americans, I’m sure, feel proud.

Yes, and the second fact is a non sequitur to the first. You’re suffering from Politician’s Logic, or just a need to be dismissive of the French and France based on the actions of Charles De Gaulle 70 years ago.

Sorry but to claim it was a great act of America coming to the rescue is complete garbage.
You might as well go all the way, call all the French cowards, and have the Americans swinging onto the train from the nearest bridge waving their machine guns around their heads whilst singing the Star Spangled Banner. Which is probably how it will go in an American movie.

I disagree. We had lots of news reports back then, including daily body counts from the Vietnam War.

It’s an interesting question – there has been a lot of debate over the effects of TV news reporting on the American public’s loss of faith in their commanders during the Vietnam War.
