Here is how much out of control the random shootings of innocent victims is in the U.S.: I was standing in a buffet line watching a TV tuned to the news. The current news being reported was about the murder of the four soldiers in a recruiting office, but the crawl at the bottom of the screen was about the contemporaneous conviction of the Colorado theatre shooter. We can barely keep up with all the senseless massacres; to the extent that they have almost lost their shock value. The irony is that whatever stupid statement the shooters think they are making is in danger of being lost in obscurity because of the constant barrage of new incidents.
I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

There are less violent crimes overall now but they just get reported more.

True but 99% of those who get their 15 seconds of fame dont deserve it in the first place. We live in a world where the media and many onlookers are obsessed with celebrities, fame, money, stardom and other garbage that shouldnt be in the news. However with 24/7 rolling news channels, the internet, tv and what else space has to be filled. One feeds the other.
I still remember the London Times reporting the news that Sharon Stone had been seen buying a hat!!

The BBC report that
Part of the aircraft wing found on Reunion Island is from the missing MH370 plane, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has confirmed…
The debris was found on the remote French Indian Ocean island a week ago.
In a statement, Mr Najib said the “the burden and uncertainty faced by the families” in the 515 days since the aircraft disappeared had been “unspeakable”.
“We now have physical evidence that flight MH370 tragically ended in the southern Indian Ocean,” he added.

The footage and reports coming from China in regards to the explosions have been horrific but this is the most terrifying footage so far. As can only be expected in such circumstances there is some bad language so if you get offended by such or are too young to hear the words please do not watch.

If there’s ever a time such language is justified, this would be it. Sheesh!

I hope the US will send him to Zimbabwe if they want to charge him with poaching. (And it seems he’s already been convicted once in the US for the same offence.)
RIP Cecil.
The hunter (a dentist) wrote a big apology to his patients, claiming he didn’t know it was Cecil and that he did everything legally (he has little if any of a practice left). First, legal does not equal moral. Second, he didn’t have a lion license for this season and is probably guilty of violating a US conservation law called the Lacey Act, which is part of a United Nations treaty and governs Americans who violate the laws of other countries that protect animals. The Zimbabwe government feels he’s guilty of poaching – in collusion with the landowner and the guides – and has said it will start extradition proceedings. Third, if he was the big experienced hunter he claims to be, he would have known who Cecil was. Fourth, he was convicted of lying to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in 2009 for lying about a domestic bear kill. Finally, both the American and worldwide court of public opinion has already convicted him. 170k signatures have been gathered in Zimbabwe and while the White House has committed to responding to such petitions by foreign countries, it hasn’t always hurried up about it. The hunter is hiding out, but someone apparently in touch with him has contacted the State Department.
I hope I’m not giving my country too much credit (but like all of us, my country has disappointed me on more than one occasion) when I say I’d be surprised if he is not extradited. The treaty is a liberal one, and the USA has few ways to keep him, if the charge is valid. The State department can only consider the validity and seriousness of the charges; they can’t take Zimbabwe’s bad civil rights record into account. Probably the only “valid” reason (morally, not legally valid) the US has to refuse extradition is if we believe his human rights would be violated. Zimbabwe can’t do a thing about it if we decide to deal with him on our own, whatever excuse we might give. I think the worldwide outrage that our refusal to extradite would cause is something our government needs to think very seriously about.
If it were up to me, I’d seriously consider strapping a parachute onto his back and pushing him out of an airplane over Zimbabwe at 10,000 feet, but I’m sure there are factors I’m not taking into consideration.

I think if he went to Zimbabwe to face charges he wouldnt see US soil again for a good number of years so his lawyers will put in objections and whatever else they can think of to keep him in the States for as long as possible. I wouldnt be surprised if a deal was done between the two countries however so he doesnt have to.

Look like there has been a bomb explosion outside a temple and popular tourist spot in Bangkok; far too many people dead and injured. It looks like another terror attack. It’s sad to see the world plagued by these attacks – where gutless cowards kill random strangers from some ill-conceived notion of superiority.
HKL and I had been thinking of visiting Thailand for a holiday in December; it’s getting harder and harder to find places to visit where these sorts of things aren’t becoming increasingly common. Now I’m wondering if this is a good place to visit – will there be more attacks? I guess that’s part of what these pathetic individuals want – to make as many of us as possible scared to live our lives as normal.

Those behind these attacks want you to stop going to countries and locations so the best thing to do is live your life as normal; just be sensible and heed any travel advice (here’s the UK foreign travel advice website).
