Very interesting that you typed “rending” instead of “trending”.

Horrible news of a train crash close to home yesterday…

So far, 8 people have been found dead. Now, Zag is nervous about our trip to NYC in July as we are traveling by train on Amtrak.

Government says four cancer charities are shams
I copied/pasted the article under the spoiler to spare you the ads.
Washington (CNN) In a rare joint action with attorneys general for each of the 50 states, the Federal Trade Commission says four cancer charities run by extended members of the same family conned donors out of $187 million from 2008 through 2012 and spent almost nothing to help actual cancer patients. Each of the charities charged were the subject of extensive reporting by CNN in 2013. And in each instance, none of the four charities would comment. We were ordered out of the building at the Cancer Fund of America in Knoxville, Tennessee, and were the object of an obscene gesture by the CEO of The Breast Cancer Society in Mesa, Arizona.
The Cancer Fund of America is run by James Reynolds Sr. His son James Reynolds Jr. is the CEO of the Breast Cancer Society. Another charity, the Children’s Cancer Fund of America, is run by Rose Perkins, the ex-wife of the elder James Reynolds. He’s also the CEO of the fourth charity, Cancer Support Services.
The government says the charities claimed to provide direct support for cancer patients, breast cancer patients and children with cancer.
“These were lies,” the government’s complaint says.
Jessica Rich, chief of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, says that in all, the charities spent about 97% of donations they received either on private fundraisers or on themselves. Only 3%, she says, went to help actual cancer patients.
According to the complaint, funds donated to help cancer patients instead went for personal use, in often lavish ways.
“Donated funds were used to pay for vehicles, personal consumer goods, college tuition, gym memberships, Jet Ski outings, dating website subscriptions, luxury cruises, and tickets to concerts and professional sporting events,” the complaint says.
“Most of what we are doing is bringing actions against fraud,” says Rich. “And this is as about as bad as it can get: taking money away from cancer victims.”
There was also what the FTC calls “rampant nepotism” at play in all of the charities. For instance, at the Breast Cancer Society, James Reynolds Jr. hired his wife, Kristina Hixson, to be his public relations manager. The complaint states that he also hired Hixson’s two sisters, her son by a previous marriage, her mother and her step-nephew. According to the complaint, Hixson’s mother had been a caterer. At the Breast Cancer Society, she was hired to write grant applications.
Moreover,on their tax returns, each charity claimed millions of dollars in donated goods shipped to overseas locations on behalf of cancer patients. The complaint says the charities never owned any of the goods in question and simply paid a fee to a private firm in South Carolina to ship the goods, called gifts-in-kind. CNN went to Guatemala in early 2014 to investigate anyone who may have received those gifts and could find no evidence that they even existed.
As a result of the complaint, two of the charities say they will close their doors. Both the Breast Cancer Society and the Children’s Cancer Fund of America are being dissolved, according to the complaint. James Reynolds Jr. faces a judgment of more than $60 million in fines and Rose Perkins, who runs the Children’s Cancer Fund of America, faces a judgment of around $30 million.
Under a proposed final order, the judgment against Reynolds Jr. will be suspended when he pays $75,000. The judgments against Children’s Cancer Fund of America will be partly met upon liquidation of its assets, and the judgment against Perkins will be suspended due to her inability to pay.
The FTC’s Jessica Rich, however, said there are few assets left. Government regulators will be lucky to recover $1 million, she told CNN.
As for James Reynolds Sr., he will contest the charges in the complaint, the government says. CNN hasn’t yet been able to reach attorneys for Reynolds Sr., his son or Perkins for comment, but in a message posted on the Breast Cancer Society website, Reynolds Jr. said:
“While the organization, its officers and directors have not been found guilty of any allegations of wrong doing, and the government has not proven otherwise, our Board of Directors has decided that it does not help those who we seek to serve, and those who remain in need, for us to engage in a highly publicized, expensive, and distracting legal battle around our fundraising practices.”

It’s going to be a ‘yes’ for same-sex marriage! Woohoooo!
Currently at 62% ‘yes’ with 32 of the 43 constituencies having returned their votes.
Only one constituency has rejected it so far Roscommon-South Leitrim- blah .

We also pissed off the Westboro Baptist Church- mission done everyone.

Good on Ireland.

A huge congratulations to Éire on a defining vote.
It is remarkable to consider that homosexuality was illegal until only 22 years ago. It is quite a journey to go from illegality to a public affirmation of support for same sex marriage in such a short time. The positive message the referendum gives about Éire being a modern country no longer dominated by the Roman Catholic Church can only be good for the future.
One has to wonder how long before Northern Ireland’s politicians face down their religious elements and join England, Wales, Scotland and now Éire. There is no justice without equality.

Along with divorce and criminalizing marital rape, Ireland has come along way in the last 30 years. Thankfully!
We are slowly but surely slinking away from the crushing grip the Catholic church had (and still holds) on the country, I hope legalisation of abortion is next.

Tragically, an 11 year old girl was struck by a car and killed in the next county over – in the same town where Zag’s sister lives. Taylor Swift provided some comfort yesterday. Class act.

One day maybe the Philippines will start to allow divorce and do away with all the corruption and family violence that goes along with not allowing it.

A volcano erupted in Japan today (far from where I am). The local authority (Japanese Meterological Agency – monitors all natural calamities) immediately classified it as a Level 5 event (mandatory evacuation) and sent a ship and some helos. It’s a very small -tiny- island, with just around 130 inhabitants.
The Yahoo! headline? Volcano Erupts on Remote Japanese Island – Residents Flee !!
To where? Is it random flee’ing? Circular? Maybe it was musical, like with the chairs.
I know they meant the residents boarded the ship and were kept safe, but that headline was a bit… dramatic.

FIFA are corrupt – no one is surprised. The man leading FIFA Sepp Blatter denies all knowledge and is almost certainly going to be re-elected later – no one is surprised.

4 days ago Sepp Blatter denies all knowledge of corruption in FIFA, asks what can he do if folk close to him who he sees everyday and speak frequently are corrupt, gets reelected and categorically states that he’s staying in power with no plan to quit at any time ever ever ever.
So yip today he’s quit.
I asked before – why do they bother with the first part?

Illinois Senate passes marijuana decriminalization bill but plans changes
“The Illinois legislature joined the movement to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of pot, passing a measure Thursday that would bar arrest for the offense.
Carrying small amounts of marijuana would result in a fine instead of an arrest under a measure approved Thursday by the Illinois Senate.
Low-level cannabis possession would go from a crime with fines up to $2,500 and up to a year in a jail to penalties likened to a traffic ticket: no court time and a fine of up to $125 for those caught with 15 grams or less, which is the equivalent of about 25 cigarette-size joints.
The Senate voted 37-19 to approve the legislation after it cleared the House last month. But it’s not going to Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s desk just yet — sponsors say they’ll hold onto it until additional cleanup language is approved.
If signed into law, Illinois would join 17 other states in decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana, according to NORML, which advocates the legal use of marijuana. Nearly half the country, including Illinois, already allows for the use of medical marijuana.”
A step in the right direction. Legalize It!

Sometimes you read a story and your whole being sinks in dread, bewilderment, horror, anger and sadness at what some people do to others, especially those who are unable to defend themselves.
The article on the bbc is headed ‘Facebook criticised by NSPCC over sobbing baby video clip‘ so you may not want to click on the link or read the spoiler below which contains the first few sentences from the article.
A leading child protection charity has demanded Facebook and other social networks be held to account following a clash over a “disturbing” video.
Facebook has refused to remove a clip from its site that the NSPCC said showed a “terrified, sobbing baby” being repeatedly dunked into a bucket of water.
Facebook does not believe the video breaches its rules.
