The site of the Beatles’ final public concert, Candlestick Park is being demolished in favor of a shopping/condos/entertainment complex. I understand that an empty stadium no longer used regularly (the Giants and 49ers each have had their new stadiums for years), and many new jobs will be created. Still, the Beatles history lover in me feels sad.
Just wanted to say that this was actually the first season the 49ers haven’t played at Candlestick. Its pretty stupid I think to put a commercial complex at The Stick because of its location. I’ve been to Candlestick once and it is a very small road to get there and I dont see how anyone would want to put a shopping center there. The only thing I like about the new proposal is that they will put markers in the stores and parking lot where famous events happened on the field like the concert. But its still sad to see it go.

Maybe I’m being naive, but with all of this horrible s**t going on in the world, this generation really needs a band that can inspire optimism and creativity like the lads did back in the 60s. Just a movement that is a really positive force upon young people. I hope we haven’t become too cynical as a society that this can’t or won’t happen.

But at least Paul went back one last time before it demolished, as you know. That was the last event at the Stick. When I first read that Candelstick Park was to be demolished, I was so mad. I still don’t understand the necessities of demolishing these old stadiums. First Shea and now this!
By hook or by crook, I'll be last in this book.

Is their any point in keeping the stadiums?

Truthfully, I don’t think anyone’s going to miss Candlestick Park for reasons that aren’t sentimental. Everyone complained about how cold it was, even on SF’s warmest days.

It seems that every time a building that has any connection to The Beatles no matter how minuscule it is is to be demolished or closed a handful of people raise their voices in protest citing it as a historical building. In truth its probably better for the cities/town and the people to move on and use the site for reasons that benefit the community than hark back to an event long ago that the Beatles themselves never gave gave much thought to then or now.

Some tropical storms hitting the north of the country at the moment, including my former home town of Brisbane. I hope the damage is minor and no one is injured.
Or worse – a cricket match gets shortened or postponed.

It looks like the one tomorrow might, the Friday night football match there was cancelled a few hours back.

Tomorrow’s cricket match can’t be postponed. There are no spare days for pool matches. If unable to play a minimum of 20 overs each, the match will be treated as a draw – with both sides getting a point, making it harder for England to get out of the pool group. Not that it looks like England have much hope anyway.

England still have to play a couple of rather poor teams so should just edge thru. If they can’t beat Scotland at cricket then they should take their stumps, bats and balls and burn them to make some new Ashes and arrange new opposition as the Australians will be laughing too hard to ever play them again. Us Scots are proud folk but even we acklowledge we’re s**t at the game – if one of our batters hits a four wild parties start in the crowd that can last weeks and the batter is given a certificate and bottle of whiskey to mark such an achievement. Get over 10 runs and its the ownership of a small loch.

I’d take it over KFC as it probably has more chicken content.
