That is because there isn’t something for them to fall back on. There should be focus on the infrastructures so that countries can have enough stability for education so that things can get better for people. If people don’t have anything, then they are more likely to turn to non productive ways of income.
Some of these people are killing other people BECAUSE of education (in Africa and Pakistan and Afghanistan). Others don’t want women to be educated and kill anyone who tries. I appreciate the idea but they don’t want anything to do with freedom or education or free thought. If ‘we’ go there to assist with infrastructure workers will be kidnapped, held hostage, possibly killed because too many crazy people have guns and swords and bombs and have had too much sun or something.
I DO agree that this sort of thing will help in less militant countries and maybe we could get some allies there to help, I think we should have done more to help build infrastructure in the old communist bloc – but I don’t think it will do anything in more violent / extreme spots.

The majority of people in the countries where the Islamist terrorist operate support International aid and outreach, but if they openly show their support they are killed. Also, aid workers are often the target of the attacks and you cant give money to their governments because they are usually corrupt and are in cahoots with the terrorists. Most of the terrorists aren’t even trying to gain income, they are mostly just teenage boys who have been duped into thinking that killing “infidels” is the right thing to do. Sadly, the only way to stop them is to take down these radical organizations by force.

While most of this is sad but true, the conclusion:
“Sadly, the only way to stop them is to take down these radical organizations by force.”
has also been shown not to work, as we almost inevitably kill innocents during the combat operations – which just fuels the cycle of hatred and adds more potential recruits who want revenge (part of the radicalization of the French perpetrators seems to have been in reaction to reports of the US interrogation of prisoners).
Sorry if I seem to be going on too much about this; I am really feeling lost about the way forward. It seems age has not given me any brilliant insights or wisdom – but then I guess we have been struggling with variations of this particular issue since the Crusades, if not before.

Target is leaving Canada, and I thought this was an interesting analysis on why – interesting because you think someone would have foreseen the problems in inheriting the old Zellers locations.

I hope everyone in the NE of the USA is managing okay with the snow.
We are having a cooler spell at the moment so some pleasant relief from the heat before it ramps up for February which can be very hot here.

That snow storm looks so cool. I’d be ignoring the warnings and walking around until the authorities picked me up and locked me back in my house. We have heavy snow forecast for Wednesday and most of Thursday so i’ll be out in that instead.

I imagine a scenario similar to this:

@parlance our Lily did something similar a few years back when we received 3 feet of snow from Winter Storm Nemo. She ran off our front porch into snow that was well over her head. She looked like Bugs Bunny tunneling to Pismo Beach.
So all day yesterday, forecasters were predicting doom and gloom for Eastern Pennsylvania with about 8 inches expected where I live and a foot where I work in Philadelphia. I woke up this morning to discover there wasn’t even enough snowfall to fill in Lily’s paw prints from last night. The sound of the prognosticators backtracking this morning was deafening. Not so good news for New England, however.

You’ve heard about Brian Williams’ problems with exaggerating his war experience, right? He has said that a helicopter he was riding in was “hit by an RPG,” when it was actually another copter in his group. For some reason, it reminds me of Sam Kinison’s rant about his “service” in Vietnam. Listen to what he says about what the p****ies back stateside were doing as he was “slugging it out with Charlie” in Nam:
I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

I think this is also the movie where Rodney Dangerfield sidles up to a good-looking woman and asks if she would like to get busy. Repulsed, she replies witheringly, “I don’t believe in casual sex.” Rodney says, “that’s OK, baby, I’ll leave my tie on.” That one has nothing to do with the Beatles, so I won’t mention it here.

The site of the Beatles’ final public concert, Candlestick Park is being demolished in favor of a shopping/condos/entertainment complex. I understand that an empty stadium no longer used regularly (the Giants and 49ers each have had their new stadiums for years), and many new jobs will be created. Still, the Beatles history lover in me feels sad.

I was channel flipping last night and settled on the local multi-cultural channel which was having a Valentine’s Day marathon of the Chinese dating show “If You Are The One”. I don’t know if you have seen or heard of it but it’s a lot of fun and leaves most Western shows of its type far behind in entertainment value.
The reason I mention it is that one of the female participants was the most inspirational person I have seen in years. When they presented her intro they showed a vivacious lady of 24 – who had lost both arms at the age of 3!! Over the years she has learnt to do everything with her legs and feet. She dresses, cooks, combs her hair, writes and uses her computer this way. She also works in a managerial position and had the most cheerful and positive disposition.
I was, and still am, stunned that someone was able to overcome such adversity and go on to lead a full and inspiring life. When we see so many awful stories on the news and in this thread, I’m just so pleased to see people who can rise above such tragic events and make the world a better place for anyone who meets them.
