Thats horrific. What a horrible way to die. Who could do such a thing?
Far too many people unfortunately.
Hostage crisis in Sydney as I type, looks like a bunch of islamist sympathisers have taken over a cafe in the CBD. Hope no one gets killed by the loons. The world would be so much better without ratbag religious fundamentalists of any persuasion.
I am coming more and more to the point of view that religion is a form of insanity which manifests in all sorts of bizarre behaviour. Sorry if you disagree but there are so few ‘nice, true’ religious folks about and so many crazy folk get attracted to the idea of a higher being – world history has been scarred by them acting out their fantasies.

The crazy extremists of anything are always getting all the news and giving their group a bad name which stinks for everyone

Exactly. Little old Jewish couples walking to temple and Christian families sitting in their pews don’t make the news, those who use religion to justify murder and other horrible behaviors are the ones everyone hears about. The likes of religious terrorists and the Westboro Baptist Church are what everyone hears about.
The thing is that these people are actually going against one of the biggest points in pretty much every religion which is to not kill. It really makes no sense, but the point is that they are crazy, the sane people can only get in the news by doing good, which is rarely as memorable as the bad.

As Anna says its the fundamentalists and die-hards who get into the news with their actions however there are far more believers of all faiths who live their lives doing their best to live in a peaceful unassuming manner. There are just as many non-religious people who are intent on causing pain, misery, terror and heartache for theor own cause.
Sadly, as George sang, “not too many people can see we’re all the same”.

It’s often been said that Buddhism is the only religion that hasn’t killed people; I’m not a Buddhist (although I share some of their philosophic, non-religious viewpoints), and I respect that.
“Forsan et haec olim meminisse juvabit” (“Perhaps one day it will be a pleasure to look back on even this”; Virgil, The Aeneid, Book 1, line 203, where Aeneas says this to his men after the shipwreck that put them on the shores of Africa)

Trouble is Mr K, most of the religious texts I have read (including Bible, Koran) have plenty of bits that crazy people can use to justify killing (eye for an eye, jihad and on it goes) – so they are not all about not killing. The other thing that annoys me about a lot of religiosity is that folks are focussed on the ‘end times’ and not on making this world a better place for all of us. Most of them are also very exclusionary – ‘believe what this text says or you will go to hell’.
And then claiming ‘free will’ as a reason this supposed deity doesn’t intervene just doesn’t cut it for me; the victims hardly had a choice.
On a more positive note, 3 people have managed to get out of the cafe – hopefully they are all well at the end, though I can only imagine the trauma they will have to live with for years to come.

As/if this topic of conversation continues can we just be mindful that discussions on religion have a tendency to quickly evolve into arguments and long drawn-out debates on minor matters like someone incorrectly adding an extra “a” to an inconsequential quote. So if you do post please be mindful of what you post and how you word it. It’s the same with politics.

Yes, but only when read and interpreted out of context. Also, I think its more of a psychological phenomenon, this need to have an identity that pushes people to commit horrible acts no religion or society should sanction and tolerate. Its the wayward ideologies of a few individuals which together have had come to foster fundamentalism in all sorts of religions and societies, tarring other members of the said religion/society with the same brush. It’s really depressing.
The twitter trend that followed shows how humanity still exists. Peace and Love

Three dead, including the gunman. Sad day for Australia. Sad day for all of us.
Yes indeed, I was hoping they could sort this out without the need for violence – but it seems the perpetrator was on bail for a number of violent crimes and had a history of extremism. I have friends going to Sydney for a function today – must say I admire their nerve. I’m almost too scared to go to the local shops in case some copy-cat nut wants to hit the capital, the extremists have got what they hoped for by putting fear into our normal lives.
And Strawberry, I appreciate the sentiment but I’m not convinced that they are making their interpretations out of context (and it’s not just a few people). One of the religions I am dubious about was founded in violent times by a violent man who wrote violent texts and went on a war of conquest to spread it – a number of his present-day followers are merely following his example. Religions give intolerant people a great club to join to reinforce their paranoia.
Anyway, I’ve said enough, I will now cease and desist.

There’s been a horrific attack on a school in Pakistan, with at least 130 people dead. I can’t find sufficient words.

Sadly I’m getting so used to senseless American shootings. How these can happen and so many still go on that its right that folk can legally own guns because its part of the constitution is beyond me. I still remember Obama stating that he would tackle the gun issue in America after the shooting at Sandy Hook regardless of the politics involved yet nothing has seemingly been done as he keeps hitting brick walls.

Why do you call it wiped out his ex-wife’s family? Why not say kill or murdered.

Just too terrible to understand. What sort of people wake up in the morning, strap explosives on themselves, pick up their guns and then go off to kill as many children as they can?

The same sorts of people who think it is okay to torture prisoners and then condemn human-rights violations in other countries I guess. The same people who say events in Sydney would have gone differently if everyone in the cafe had handguns – I shudder to think how many would have died in the ensuing wild-west shoot-out.
