People not participating is a problem, but I think we should be careful to not automatically pin that on the voters/non-voters, since both mainstream parties do a pretty horrible job giving people reasons to vote for them. If I was in the USA I would definitely vote for Biden over Trump but that would be more a reflection of my intense dislike of Trump than any endorsement of Biden’s actual politics, which are as milquetoast as it gets.

In other words, it’s hard to interest the population in your party when what you’re offering is essentially a continuation of the status quo.

A very important election in Bolivia tonight, as the country picks its new president, VP and congress.

It comes after previous president Evo Morales was forced to resign in a US-backed coup last November after a controversy over whether he could stay on for a fourth term in office, having been in power since 2006. Morales, a socialist and the first indigenous born politician to hold the office, ran a popular government which drastically reduced poverty, reduced Bolivia’s dependence on organisations like the World Bank/IMF, saw increased rights and representation for indigenous citizens, and oversaw strong economic growth thanks to his nationalisation of the country’s natural resources. However, the latter element has raised environmental concerns, and for his entire presidency he’s been opposed by the country’s wealthier classes.

He was replaced by interim president Jeanine Áñez, a hard right winger who once called Bolivia’s indigenous population ‘Satanic’, but who is not running for re-election after saying she did not want to split the conservative vote. Morales’ chosen successor from his party, MAS, is his former Minister of the Economy, Luis Arce, who is currently leading in polls, with his main opposition being centrist Carlos Mesa and Luis Camacho of the right wing Creemos party. Hopefully Arce can pull off a victory in this election and pick up where Morales left off.

That’s fascinating. Too many elections this month, so I hadn’t clocked this one! Exit polls are showing Arce winning, so that seems pretty good.

Perhaps worth noting in this thread that Biden has now been up double digits in the national polling averages for the last 10 days now – looking increasingly like a Biden win. Then again, polls don’t mean anything if nobody votes.a-hard-days-night-ringo-15

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8Indeed, I’m really hopeful for a Biden win, but I just hope sensible Americans don’t get complacent seeing this polls. Campaign like you’re 10 points down, always.

Also, the full results won’t be out for a couple of days, but quick counts in Bolivia have shown that MAS have won the election with more than 50% of the vote, which means that there won’t need to be a run off round. I’m naturally biased of course, but to me this is great news – when the coup happened last November we were told that it wasn’t a coup, that Morales was a dictator despised by Bolivians everywhere, and famously by Elon Musk that ‘we can coup who we want’, and yet MAS have been decidedly returned to power, and Morales can come home. I hope that Arce will carry on the campaign to reduce poverty and promote growth while protecting Bolivia’s environment, fighting for indigenous rights and working against corruption in the government.

A damning indictment of the Labour party today from the Government watchdog, the Equality and Human Rights Commission, on anti-Semitism within the party, finding they acted unlawfully in three areas including political interference in complaints, poor training for those dealing with complaints, and harassment; breaking the Equality Act that it itself introduced.

Current party leader, Keir Starmer, has accepted the report in full, saying it is a shameful day for Labour; previous party leader, Jeremy Corbyn, whose watch it happened in, still insists that anti-Semitism in the party during that time was exaggerated for political reasons by those outside and inside the party.

It will be interesting to see if his refusal to accept the report, and still claiming that the complaints of anti-Semitism under his leadership were exaggerated and aimed at destabilising his leadership, sees Corbyn investigated and thrown out of the party, along with those like Ken Livingstone.

I am glad I left the party on the day Corbyn was elected, knowing that it was a backwards step, but Keir has a tough road ahead of him if he decides to bring to account those responsible for the rise of anti-Semitism in the party.

Wow! A year ago Jeremy Corbyn was leading the Labour Party into a General Election, today he has been suspended by the party and had the whip removed (which means his vote in Parliament is no longer a Labour vote) over his attitude to anti-Semitism, pending a full investigation.

I believe the IHRA definition spells antisemitism as one word, rather than being hyphenated, @Ron Nasty , as the latter why of spelling it legitimises the use of the term ‘Semitism’ on its own, which has long been associated with outdated, and sometimes even Nazi-associated categorisations of race and ethnicity.

I’m conflicted on Corbyn’s suspension. I find that while the statement he put out probably has a grain of truth to it, it was a very tasteless thing to say and seems unnecessarily aggressive towards the Jewish community. I also recognise that this was probably a good decision PR wise to Starmer, and a gesture of good faith to the Jewish community that the party is learning, and won’t make the same mistake again.

Then again, I still believe that Corbyn is one of the most genuine anti-racists we’ve had represent us in a long time, and it makes me sad to see him treated in this way, given that as far as I’m aware the problem was that the party’s method of processing complaints about antisemitism was inadequate and not properly monitored, and while Corbyn could have taken much stronger and timelier action on this, it is clearly a much wider institutional problem than one that can simply be solved by suspending the leader who himself inherited a broken system.

Sorry about that @QuarryMan, generational thing, I’ll try and remember.

Bad day for Johnny Depp, losing his libel action against The Sun after it called him a wife-beater. The judge found him a wife-beater. Suing for libel is always dangerous.

Anyway, the campaigning is over, and now it’s down to the vote (and I think you know what I mean).

I hope all of you that have a vote in this election, and who haven’t yet voted, will do so today, whichever way you choose to vote.

Wow. I distinctly remember 4 years ago, when I thought that was the most important election ever. This time around, it’s way more important – and the numbers of early votes show that.

To those Americans who have not yet voted (and are eligible) – please go and vote today. It’s the best thing you can possibly do.a-hard-days-night-ringo-15

I’ll be watching the coverage all day tomorrow, and I hope we can get a result on the day.

And of course, I hope it’s the result I want a-hard-days-night-george-10

Regardless of the result, Trump is going to cause chaos. If he wins it’s a massive ego boost and the country is screwed even more than it is at the moment, if he loses he’ll be claiming for months the election was a fix and stirring up trouble with his half-cocked accusations and incendiary claims whilst denying he lost. He’s already said he’s getting his lawyers involved as soon as the polls close as votes will be going uncounted for weeks.

Trump or Biden is a dreadful choice to be honest, like choosing between smacking yourself with a rake every five minutes until your dead or walking around for the rest of your days cradling the same rotting nappy in your arms.

With the benefit of having most of the states declared, I think Trump will get 274 and Biden 264.
