For my poor exam students, all oral exams have been cancelled and all students will be given full marks for both Leaving and Junior cert oral exam. Blah! It’s a very s***e situation as everyone is graded on a bell curve which works very well. The top 10% or so get an A, next 30% get a B, next 30% a C, next 20% a D and 10% fail.
I have had people this year who have worked really hard at their oral exams and would have got either As or Bs in that component, who aren’t as good at the written component and would probably get low Bs or Cs in it. They are now being awarded the same marks as somebody who would have gotten an E or a D in their oral, and it will make it more difficult for them to get a higher grade because of the bell curve where they’ll probably fall into the grade lower than they should have got if the orals had been facilitated.
Absolutely stupid move, it would have been better to have the written exam being 100% and everyone having an equal footing.
The Irish oral is worth 40% and the pass rate for our exams is 40% because of this no one can now fail Irish and that means there will be increased competition for college places as people will have higher grades because the people who would have failed have now magically passed.
Also the written exams will be marked like a biatch with mistakes which would have only been mildly penalised in previous years, now getting the full hammer to get those top 10, 30, 30, 20, 10.

I’m ADST right now- remember we have lots of timezones
And now for some news… there is a case of COVID-19 in my suburb.
F**k.
It’s getting close.
Ok, wasn’t sure on the time zone.
Taking those three timezones into account, best time would be 4pm friday or Saturday EDT (i forgot about daylight savings ugh) which would make it morning of saturday or sunday for you.
And wash hands, stay inside and be safe.

Some happier, funnier Coronavirus situation. Watch the webcam from our tourist centre ‘Temple Bar’and see all the confused tourists in their tacky Paddy’s Day gear, wondering why the pubs are shut.
Also despair at the groups of 5 people all huddled together talking.

My dad loves to tune in to the Blowing Rock, NC webcam. The town is a favorite visiting spot (usually in the fall, while listening to George Winston) and we like to keep up with how it looks when we’re not there.

I know new threads in “All Together Now ” are locked, and I understand why, but might it not be an idea to create a coronavirus thread that can take in the news elements alongside the more personal reflections and our attempts to entertain ourselves while living in this strange new world?
@Joe I think it would be good to have a catch-all thread for this.

The Australian arsehole (I won’t name him) who committed the disgusting terrorist attack on mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand on 15 March last year – due to go on trial in June after pleading not guilty to 51 charges of murder, 40 charges of attempted murder, and 1 terrorism charge – has today changed his plea to guilty on ALL charges.

@meanmistermustard I’m very sorry if I’m breaking the news to you but Tunnock’s(manufacturer of the famous teacakes and caramel wafers for those of you not in the know) have temporarily ceased production in their Scottish factory. They will review the situation at Easter but it’s unknown when they’ll reopen.
I’m sorry for your temporary loss x.

Varadkar has announced we’re on lockdown. Not to leave our houses except for buying food, getting medicine or visiting people who need care. Exercise is limited to within 2km of your house. Not allowed on public transport unless you’re essential workers.

Yeah that won’t be happening.
Expect Nicola Sturgeon announcing on Monday morning (there will be two days of national mourning and gorging) that Tunnocks and Barrs are going to be kept open due to unlimited government resources being put in place. We can cope with years stuck inside our homes but we need our teacakes and bottles of Irn Bru otherwise there is sod all chance Scotland will survive.

Frankly, I think both products should be available on the NHS at times of need.
They should be dropped into our homes daily until it is over. No problem living off Tunnocks Teacakes and Irn Bru, would be a step towards a healthier national diet.

Tunnocks teacakes are a godsend in times of crisis like these. Do Americans have them? If not, our friends across the pond are missing out deeply.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.
