I stayed up till the Glasgow result. Once that was a Yes vote, but not by a big enough margin, the result was clear.
Myself, I am pleased to see Scotland still a part of the Union.
Now the real work begins for our politicians. A new democratic settlement needs to be reached for the whole of the UK. That is the opportunity the Scottish No vote has gifted the rest of the UK, and I thank Scotland – Yes and No voters both – for giving all of this chance to redefine the Union.
The question is whether our politicians are up to it, and it’s a big question. Scotland should obviously get more devolved powers quickly as they have been involved in a conversation about their part of the Union for a long time. That conversation has not really been going on in the rest of the Union, and the two should not be tied together to happening on the same timetable as some of our politicians are already attempting to do.
If our politicians get this wrong, and fool themselves into believing this has been settled for a generation, they will fail the UK, and the Union will fall, with Scotland demanding another referendum within years should the promises made prove hollow.

I’ll openly state that Cameron et al will break the promises made in the days before the vote. They’ve lied and turned back on promises and vows made to their own voters so it wont be at all surprising when they do it to us.

For the record, here in Canada it was 15 years between Quebec’s two unsuccessful referendums on separation (1980, 1995).
Sorry for your disappointment, @meanmistermustard. Hope you’re still going to celebrate your soon-to-come 10,000th post!

I’m surprised Alex Salmond resigned. I guess I’m used to politicians in the US hanging in there long after anyone wants them to.

He’ll be about for a bit longer as he hands over the reigns to whoever replaces him, the favourite currently being second-in-command Nicola Sturgeon. The SNP wont let Cameron, Clegg and Milliband off lightly and they would be incredibly stupid to piss off Scotland as we will not vote for them in next years General Election next year – tho thats more a concern for Milliband and Clegg as the Scots already detest the Tories thanks to Thatcher; i think there is one Conservative seat in Scotland and thats right on the border. However i doubt they care that much despite the words that have been uttered in the last few weeks.

Pakistani Malala Yousafzai has been jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Indian child rights campaigner Kailash Satyarthi.
She becomes, by far, the youngest Nobel Laureate, at the age of 17. (The previous youngest, Sir William Lawrence Bragg, was 25 when he was awarded the Physics prize with his father in 1915; two Peace prize winners were 32 when they won).
It is a remarkable achievement for a remarkable young woman. You have to wonder if the Taliban just how powerful a voice they would give her when they shot her in the head. Surviving that, she could so easily have sought anonymity and place to hide, but instead spoke louder and inspired many.
It is a well deserved award.

Greenpeace made a really good video on how destructive Shell is to the planet using Lego which has resulted in Lego cancelling their deal with Shell (source: Yahoo News). Doubt it will make much difference but still pleasing.

I was going to mention ebola but the topic depresses me. More aid to Africa and some quarantine and the problem is fixed, but whoever runs the world seems not to care. We quarantine animals coming to Australia and have managed to prevent the spread of some nasty diseases down here for hundreds of years – you would think countries could do the same to protect their citizens.

Tragic news from my former neck of the woods as a haunted hayride went terribly awry in Maine. This happened close to where we lived and even closer to where I worked. Zag and I talked about doing one of these every year we lived there but never got around to going.
Meanwhile, about 90 minutes or so from where we currently live, this wack job is still on the loose. He has eluded state police and the FBI for a month now.
To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

You have to pay a minimum of 5p for each plastic bag you get in a shop in Scotland from today. Delighted with this as the amount that are needlessly taken from stores is ridiculous. Couldn’t have come in soon enough for my liking.

There’s an ongoing shooting incident occurring in Ottawa, Canada – possibly terrorist-related. A soldier on guard at the National War Memorial has been shot in the chest, the shooter moved to the area of the parliament building, eyewitnesses say at least twenty shots fired there. The whole area has been locked down as police search. Some MPs have just tweeted that the gunman has been shot, while Reuters are reporting more shots in the area and the gunman is still loose.
