I have mixed opinions about Super Tuesday. On the one hand, I’m pretty disappointed that Bernie isn’t doing better, but on the other hand it’s morbidly satisfying to have all my concerns about the DNC validated. The corporate shills all fell in line behind the designated leader, just as expected. More to the point, it looks like the Democrats are most likely going to pick Joe Biden, one of the most flawed and unelectable candidates in the race, as the nominee, which confirms my suspicions that the DNC would rather have Trump in office than Bernie, given that the laughably incompetent Biden is most likely going to get steamrolled by Trump in the general.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

It does disappoint me when a political leadership race doesn’t go the way you’d want that it’s always because the race has been fixed and not that the people, actual voters, don’t support the person you’d choose… The voters that the Democratic Party need aren’t voting Bernie, not a conspiracy but a fact. He’s not even a member of the party, remaining an independent, so could always run as a third candidate if he believes he has the support…

It really irks me how much some Americans are afraid of the term “socialism.” It really irks me how in many people’s eyes socialism automatically equates to communism and thus “evil” and how the Red Scare has really tainted our country in terms of how we come to view things such as socialism, even though what Bernie proposes if very much less severe than they think. (If that makes sense? I really hope someone is picking up what I’m putting down…..). PSA: Bernie’s socialism does not equal communism and everything negative that we associate with such, fellow Democrats!

I’m curious, Rita, when you say “Bernie’s socialism” what do you mean? How are his ideas different from, say, the policies prevalent in Venezuela?

I don’t see any reason Biden would stand down as President if elected as suggested though. We all thought/hoped Trump wouldn’t last the course and have him standing for a second term. Why would someone run for the top job planning to stand down if they got it?

EDIT: With recent health problems, there is much more chance of Bernie being unable to complete a full term, so who is really the Trojan horse?

@Ron Nasty Biden is a completely different person from Trump and so that is not a fair comparison to make. Biden is a DNC crony who has no real vision that he’s striving for in running for president, he’s just there to defeat Trump because his party said so. For some reason the party appears to have decided he is the chosen one, and so he answered the call even though I feel like, in all honesty, he’d probably rather be sitting at home in his rocking chair, slowly losing his mind in peace and quiet while his grandkids pet his leg-hairs or whatever the hell (honestly, even though he’s fairly corrupt, a bit creepy, and as exciting as a lump of grey putty, I kinda feel bad for the guy). Like them or not, both the Big Bad Orange Man and Comrade Sanders are at least driven by some serious policy goals that give them reason to run in the race and try for the job. You do make a good point about Bernie’s health issues, though, and that’s another reason I think he is a weak candidate. Trump isn’t exactly a spring chicken either, but he seems to be in better health and has energy and willpower that Bernie, to my mind, lacks.

Haha I won a bet with my friends on who was going to say the word ‘Venezuela’ first. I should be getting €2 in my account now, cheers Bebu 😉

Also, Trump appears to have some pretty bad memory issues and it wouldn’t surprise me if he goes down (or is already going down) the Reagan path. At least Sanders still seems to be mentally still there.

It would be reasonably acceptable if that was the first and only time he’d forgotten to sign a bill but there’s been quite a few more instances.

Ain’t that right, Tim Apple?

I’d say Bernie’s form of socialism has much more in common with European models rather than Venezuela, Cuba or China. Think about radical extreme countries like Sweden…

I’m curious, Rita, when you say “Bernie’s socialism” what do you mean? How are his ideas different from, say, the policies prevalent in Venezuela?

The democratic socialism that Bernie promotes and campaigns doesn’t at all entail an abolishment of capitalism (which is a major problem with other hardcore American socialists because they believe that capitalism should be replaced by a socialist system entirely, whereas Bernie only wants reform. These critics are basically saying that Bernie’s idea of Democratic socialism isn’t actually socialism because of such and therefore he shouldn’t be campaigning his ideas and political beliefs as such because its “misleading.” Which I kind of agree on however there’s not another name to use for it (that I know of) so for now I’m going to continue to call it “Bernie’s socialism”). In Bernie’s beliefs, capitalism is still intact but reformed in that there is an expansion of government-provided social benefits that his funded by taxes from American citizens (there’s also tax reform included in Bernie’s beliefs. but taxes are my weak point so I would be more comfortable with someone who knows more about all that stuff to help me out a-hard-days-night-paul-7). The ideal economy for Bernie is accessible and beneficial and effective for everyone, not just the upper classes and the wealthy. Also, universal healthcare and free education are rights and democracy is also made more fair and accessible (Bernie says “one person, one vote” which I can assume implies a demolition of the electoral college and a democracy that fully relies on the popular vote).

I’m sorry to disappoint but I can’t confidently provide an answer to your second question since I’m not too familiar with Venezuela’s policies. I can only really relate what I know from Scandivania’s democratic socialist governments. I’ll do some research if I have time tonight, but as of right now I hope you can forgive me in my not being knowledgable in that area.

I was waiting to see who would bring up Sweden first. If I’d made a bet, I would have lost, because I expected @lovelyritametermaid to answer first… ah well.

So, now that Sweden’s been mentioned as I knew it would, I’m just gonna leave this here…

And @AppleScruffJunior I feel like you’re laughing at me for bringing up Venezuela, but considering Sanders has been known to praise breadlines and aspects of Fidel Castro’s regime, I don’t think it’s an unfair parallel to draw.

Edit: made this post before seeing Rita’s post above. Yes, I can forgive you for not being knowledgeable about those areas you mention, or indeed much of anything in the real world. I’m not going to pretend I have a whole lot of life experience either, but I suspect I may have gotten information from more diverse sources than you have. All I really wanted was to get your noggin joggin’ a bit, encourage you to do some of your own research. I’ll address the points you made later because I have to make dinner right now.

Oh no I’m not laughing at you, it’s just anytime the word ‘socialism’ comes up ‘Venezuela’ and ‘Sweden’/’Nordic’ closely follow (damn I should have put money on for Sweden). I just thought it would be you that would mention Venezuela first. My close social group are involved in the ‘politics’ of the BB even though they’re not members because they find our going-ons quite funny. Some of the other ‘Venezuela’ voters thought RN would mention it, another one Rita, another one Quarry and someone said SS?. 50c from each and I’m a happy camper.

The clip of Sanders praising breadlines has been taken out of context. His entire quote was:

What has to be understood is the economic problems of Nicaragua are not unique in Central America or in the third world. In fact, as poor as Nicaragua is, one of the nice things that I saw is that as a result of government policy, direct government policy in terms of the distribution of food, people are not hungry, by and large. I think it’s fair to say. You know, it’s funny, sometimes American journalists talk about how bad a country is, that people are lining up for food. That is a good thing! In other countries people don’t line up for food: the rich get the food and the poor starve to death.

You’ve probably only seen the bit in italics.

Over a choice whether people get food provided to them from the government or starve to death during times of economic instability, I think any sane person would pick “yes, give them food”.

As for Castro, yep you can imagine the same thing again. You take a section of one quote, discard what comes before and after it and it makes him seem like the communist he really is.

“Way back in, what was it, 1961, they invaded Cuba,” Sanders said,“and everybody was totally convinced that Castro was the worst guy in the world and all of the Cuban people were going to rise up in rebellion against Fidel Castro. They forgot that he educated their kids, gave their kids healthcare, totally transformed the society.”

“Not that Fidel Castro and Cuba are perfect, they certainly are not,” Sanders added, “but just because Ronald Reagan dislikes these people doesn’t mean that people in their own nations feel the same way.

Propaganda is rampant on both sides even with diverse sources you have to do your own digging, as bloody annoying as it is. Everyone has their own message to spin.

The most important thing is HoleyApple2020 would never do this to anyone, we’re as blunt as a butter knife.

I’m aware of how important it is to do your own research, and yes, I was aware of the full context of those quotes; I still find them reprehensible examples of Sanders’s track record of apologizing for repressive, authoritarian regimes that just so happen to ostensibly line up with some kind of idealized notion of the quasi-Marxist utopia he so desperately dreams of.

On a non-US politics note:

F**k

FOUR new cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in the Republic of Ireland.

Two male and two female patients from the west of Ireland have tested positive for COVID-19, the National Public Health Emergency Team said this evening.

It is believed they may be part of the same family.

The patients are all associated with travel from the same affected area in northern Italy.

*screams, puts on hazmat suit*

Also, soon to be RIP Flybe. Budget airline will collapse in a few hours, their website is already no longer live and I’d hate to be the poor lads flying out with them tomorrow because good luck. I had a choice of booking with them in January to go to Manchester but chose Ryanair to Liverpool instead…phew. I’m sorry for the 2,000 people that will probably all lose their jobs unless some kind airline decides to take a few of them.

On a non-US politics note, but quite probably a coronavirus note, UK airline Flybe has collapsed and gone into administration.

Hope you have no flights booked, @AppleScruffJunior.

Well there’s one thing I can trust with Michael O’Leary, it’s stability and feeling mildly judged by an overly stern 30-year old woman as she judges whether my briefcase really does count as carry-on luggage (it technically should but I generally overstuff it so it wouldn’t actually fit in their tester things and I just whip it to my back so they never get a proper look at it.

Mwahahaha, I’M NOT PAYING €20 FOR A SUITCASE!!!

Ryanair did once leave me and about 150 passengers standing in a stairwell for over 2 hours in Dublin Airport (I think I was live posting on here from the stairwell). Nobody ever came to tell us why we were not boarding the plane and when we would get on it, until we were suddenly told “you can board!”.

I befriended a girl from Hamburg and we were talking about this dastardly cheap airline that treats us like crap but we’ll be back again because I will book the €20 flight to Hamburg with Ryanair than the €90 flight to Hamburg with Aer Lingus. We eventually found out why we were abandoned- they needed to clean the airplane and had to call an emergency cleaning group in. I can only bloody imagine what happened to the poor plane before we got on it.

And yeah, my parents have a trip to Milan booked in September so we’ll see how it’s getting on during the summer. They had to pick the one bloody spot paul-mccartney-facepalm_gif.

I could be totally wrong, but I believe if Biden becomes the nomination will see another 2016 in the making. People are not going to vote him because he’s a corporate Democrat; however, they’re not gonna vote Bernie because of socialism and we’ll end up with Trump.

I think he avoids talking smack about people when he’s trying to negotiate with them. With Trump, he’s such a loudmouth that his actions speak louder than words, and his actions, broadly speaking, he’s not perfect, firmly prioritize America’s economic benefit.
