Scotsman article on why we went with the Unicorn.
Basically we’re just a brilliant country, i mean where else would go with a made-up creature as their official animal.
Man, i love being Scottish.

I don’t know much about the relations between each of the states of the UK and so I’d like to ask the Scottish forumpudlians as to what has transpired within the last few years that has made the option to opt out of the UK possible. I’m sure there must be deep-seated issues accumulating over the decades but has made the campaign so strong now?

From this BBC article
How far back does Scotland’s modern independence movement go?
The campaign for Scottish home rule began in earnest almost as soon as the unification with England took place, in 1707.
At the time, the view was that Scotland was desperate for cash, but opponents of the move were outraged by claims that the Scots who put their names to the Act of Union were bribed.
The episode moved Scotland’s Bard, Robert Burns, to write: “We are bought and sold for English gold. Such a parcel of rogues in a nation.”
Fast forward many years to 1934, and the establishment of the Scottish National Party, created through the amalgamation of the Scottish Party and the National Party of Scotland.
After decades of ups and downs, the nationalists won their first election in 2007, forming a minority government, before becoming the first party to win an overall majority at Holyrood in the 2011 poll – securing a mandate for an independence referendum.

Someone else (MMM) can deal with the cultural changes. In political terms it’s a bit complicated, but here’s how I see it. Forgive me if some details are wrong, and all of it’s open to debate.
In 2010 we had a UK-wide general election in which nobody won a majority. The right wing Conservatives and centrist Liberal Democrats formed a coalition, and many former Lib Dem supporters became disaffected by the direction their party had taken (breaking promises and enabling a right wing agenda). The traditionally left wing Labour party (and previous governing party) didn’t do well as part of the fallout from the recession.
The Scottish Parliament had a general election in 2011, in which the nationalist SNP won a majority, and Labour, Lib Dems and Conservatives were trounced. Whether the SNP victory would have happened if there hadn’t been such a backlash against the other main parties is moot – it had a lot of hallmarks of a typical mid-term protest vote, but I don’t want to denigrate the democratic process.
The SNP fought the election with the promise that, if they won, they would legislate for a referendum on Scottish independence (they tried in 2007 but had a minority government and couldn’t make it happen). The Westminster (UK) government had little option but to allow it to happen, although there was negotiation on what the ballot paper would say. The other parties, for various reasons – some political, others fiscal or sentimental – are in favour of the union between Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
My money’s on a no vote. The media is talking it up as being on a knife-edge, but they tend to do that in elections to sustain interest. The polls have been mostly consistent in pointing towards a majority no vote, but there are still a lot of undecideds who could swing the balance.Ron Nasty said

Which isn’t represented at all on the union flag. If Scotland secedes from the union they should redo the whole thing and make it as bizarre as possible.

Massive thunderstorm over London at the moment, seems appropriate for a night like this.
Two results in, and both good for the Union. They’re small populations though. Things won’t really become clearer until the large population areas start coming in.

I’m Welsh Nationalist and hate the monarchy with a passion but would vote no if I was in Wales and a vote came up. I like blaming other people for the state of the world and you can’t do that if you have some local git you voted for running things!
I also don’t trust the people pushing for separation – I’m sure they have their own agenda to benefit themselves and their mates by doing away with having folks looking over their shoulder. The worst corruption here in Australia is always at the local and state government levels.
