Apparently 154 of the passengers were Dutch, and I just read on Facebook that one of them is from my town and was pretty young, wonder if I knew her.
You were my first thought when I saw this story, Linde. I was so hoping that no one you knew was on board. So tragic.

Here’s the article about the American. This whole thing is sad and shouldn’t have happened.

Nope, thank God ! No one I knew personally, but someone I used to be friends with lost her aunt and an ex-colleague of mine lost one of his ex-colleagues. Anyway it doesn’t matter.
It has been discovered that there were actually more than a 180 Dutch people were on board. And they still haven’t discovered what exactly happened and why. Horrible story, and it makes me feel very unsafe. My mom was actually in Amsterdam yesterday, but she didn’t hear anything about it until she got home, lol.

I have been watching the arrival of the first 40 coffins in the Netherlands. It was done with huge dignity and respect, and the Dutch Government has announced that every body will receive the same ceremonial on their arrival. The Dutch have suffered a heavy, heavy loss and are showing the scum who downed a passenger plane – and left their victims scattered across fields for days, where some still lay – the best of human nature.

Weird fact: Putin’s daughter Maria lives in the Netherlands with her Dutch boyfriend. One Dutch Mayor called for her to be deported today. Should she blamed for who her father is? Who knows, but she may no longer live in Russia because she doesn’t like her father’s Russia?

I didn’t even know that. And I also think she shouldn’t be deported. She probably left Russia with a good reason, and indeed shouldn’t be blamed for who her father is. You can’t choose your family, unfortunately. Why do you think Hitler’s surviving relatives all changed their surnames?
Today I heard that another plane crashed, in Mali. It left from Burkina Fhaso, I believe. There were 125 people inside I think. I heard that was due to the bad weather though.

Has anybody seen the Ray Rice elevator footage that’s come out in the last few hours?
How the hell was allowed with a slap on the wrist and anger management classes? How cooperative she was shouldn’t matter to the case against him. All the evidence they needed was on tape, and he should be in jail. Vicious and ugly.
The man is a disgrace, and I’m glad his team has finally sacked him, and that whatever the ruling body is has given him an indefinite ban. Now the prosecutors need to answer for how they virtually let off a famous sporting figure.
There’s nothing sporting about hitting a woman. You punch a woman in the face and knock her out cold, then drag her hoping you can claim she’s had too much to drink, go to jail, go directly to jail, do not pass go.
No other word for him, Scum!

No.
I take it your question was rhetorical, but once more: no.

Worth noting that Janey, the wife, has come out in support of her husband and the couple married after the attack. Maybe at least part of the reason why Ray didnt go to jail.

Only comment I have is nobody has the right to strike anyone else. I don’t care if you’re married, dating, man or woman. If you put your hands to someone, expect to receive the gesture in kind. Now, having said that, there’s no call for a man as strong as RR to left hook a woman into unconsciousness. And people routinely ignore law and common sense, smacking someone out of frustration or anger. I think that’s exactly what went on here. And it started at the 9 second mark in your video.

Obama’s giving a press conference on the “war against ISIS” in an hour, 9pm EDT (1am GMT). Here’s the abc news stream; there are others. He’s said he received “unanimous support” from the other NATO allies at the last summit (that directly affected a couple of you, I believe), so it’s possible he may implicate the other NATO countries in some military effort with his statement.
EDIT: Well, he didn’t go that far. But he is going to chair a U.N. Security council meeting about it in 2 weeks. And he essentially declared war on ISIS/ISIL, without having authority to do so. Besides, they’re not a country…yet.

The real irony is that Groundskeeper Willie wouldn’t have a vote. To me, it is the thing that is most wrong about this vote. Every person born in Scotland will become Scottish (have a Scottish Passport rather than a UK Passport) after the vote, yet – in the UK alone – 800,000 people who live outside of Scotland do not have a say in their nationality. A foreign student (and that includes those from the rest of the UK) attending a Scottish university has a vote, a Scottish student at a university outside of Scotland doesn’t get a vote. That to me is wrong. I believe that the Scots should be able to decide their future, and hope it will be to remain with the UK, but I also believe every person who will see their passports and nationality changed should have a say, and they don’t. A Polish plumber living in Scotland but intending to return home has a vote, a Scottish plumber living in London but planning to return home doesn’t have a vote. That to me seems wrong.

Very true.
And also the fact that the current referendum proposes to keep using the pound after independence. I think that is the most compelling reason not to go independent. If Scotland has no say in their financial situation, their whole economy is vulnerable and is guaranteed to go down. I support Scotland’s wish to be independent but this is far from independence, in fact Scots will have less control of the economy; Scotland needs their own currency. Here is a Paul Krugman article on the subject.

This is a strange day for the United Kingdom, by the end of it – one way or another – the country will have changed.
By this time tomorrow the decision will have been made, and the votes will be being counted. We will either be on the road to a more federal country, or else we will become the Disunited Kingdom, with Scotland leaving the Union.
In many ways I am reminded of The Beatles’ split. Four parts, one walking away without seeing if another way forward might be found.
I wish the No campaign could have been more positive, but that is difficult when you arguing against something. I wish that the No campaign could have made it less about No to Scottish Independence, and more Yes to the Union.
I fear what happens ahead if Scotland does choose to go it alone, though I respect the right of the Scots to choose. I just feel the Yes campaign has been too much about the land of Milk And Honey , without warning of the bees.
I wonder what tomorrow holds.

While the Yes has been “we’re heading to the promised land”, the trouble is the no campaign has been mostly “you’re all going to die in poverty stinking of pee”, neither is true. Upfront i have been very much undecided but Better Together have been so inept they have made voting yes so much appealing. My family had a discussion 18 months/2 years ago which revolved around how the only way the no’s could lose is if they made a total mess of it and by god they have.
For all that i don’t like the guy Salmond is a very very good politician whereas Cameron, Clegg and Milliband have been atrocious party leaders throughout and whoever thought of placing Alistair Darling to spearhead their campaign should be exiled to Zimbabwe. Walked straight into Salmond’s traps pretty much every time.
If forced to make a call i’d say i can see the Yes vote narrowly winning. Do i hope I’m wrong? I don’t know. But i will be voting.
Edit: from the BBC
With 4,285,323 people – 97% of the electorate – registered to vote, a historically high turnout is expected…
Votes will be counted in each of Scotland’s 32 local authority areas.
These will include votes cast from the 789,024 postal vote applications, which was the largest volume of registration for postal votes ever in Scotland.
I’m quite excited.

BTW, I found John Oliver’s take on this whole conundrum rather informative and funny, of course. Video in the spoiler, but be warned some language may be found rude by some
