It’s been on the BBC news site. Deforestation in the Amazon is at insane levels which is obviously against the concerns over global warming.
Donald Trump is having a major sulk as he hasn’t gotten his own way in regards to buying Greenland with Denmark saying what everyone thinks which is that it’s absurd; he’s cancelled his state visit and resorted to having swipes at Denmark on twitter. He really is a pathetic man.

I don’t why Donald Trump would want Greenland when it’s country with the highest suicide rates, temperatures rarely going above 60ºF, and has a massive ice sheet in-between it.
Perhaps he’ll build a golf course.

One of the reasons would be strategic, @Dark Overlord, as Greenland is in a good geographical position in relation to European Russia should difficulties break out in that direction. Then there is his trade war with China. In the last couple of decades, China has obtained the mining rights for rare earth minerals through its investments in Africa. Rare earth minerals are essential in the manufacture of most modern technology. Trump wants his own rare earth minerals, and Greenland is said to have some of the biggest deposits in the world.

At least we’ll know who the best player on the golf course will be.

I think it would be fairer to say Trump wants America to have its own access to rare earth minerals, but it’s a minor point.

But Alaska is so close to Siberia (about 2.5 miles at it’s closest (54 if you don’t count the Diomede islands)) that it seems more logical to come in from Siberia and enter European Russia that way.

I hate how focused society is on mining rare earth minerals when we could be trying to use things like bicycle power to create electricity, but that seems like something Trump would do.
If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

Rare earths is a bit of a misnomer…….Goes back to early elements’ discoveries……They are spread pretty evenly all over the world…..Easy to get at deposits and therefore, ‘cheap as chips’ deposits are rare.
Oil and gas…….and with global warming opening up routes……makes sense. I believe offers have been made in the past by the US.
Could also be that Trump doesn’t want to be gazumped by China.

Or he read a book saying that Truman failed in his efforts and in a bid to make America great is trying to correct a horrendous injustice to the American name.

Here’s a list of some of the reasons it would be beneficial for the US to acquire Greenland……

I think we’ve established it’s not an absurd idea……..And that it has some merits for all parties involved that are at least worth exploring.
I can see that it could be construed that Trump was sulking over the point blank refusal to discuss the idea….Indeed that view, along with the assertion that Trump is a ‘pathetic man’ struck a chord with at least 5 other BMs….However, it could also be viewed that the Danish PM was somewhat rude and Trump felt affronted by the dismissal of the suggestion out-of-hand.

While Greenland is far closer to what is often referred to as the “European Theatre,” central Western Europe and France, which were the centre of the two World Wars and countless European wars beforehand. If hostilities did break out with Russia the chances are that their first move would be westward, away from Siberia.

We’ve established you can find a logic in the idea but that doesn’t mean it’s not an absurd idea without merit.
Why without merit?
Greenland is a largely self-ruled territory of Denmark that Denmark already has written into law is working its way toward independence. A country has not sold one of its territories for over 100 years because it would be frowned on. The charters that established the United Nations after World War II included the self-determination of a country’s population, which is why we saw the break-up of the European Empires after the WWII, as more and more colonised countries claimed their independence back.
It is an absurd idea without merit because the big powers no longer go around selling countries to each other like it’s some game of Monopoly.

Here’s a longish piece from Bloomberg that gives some past and recent examples of similar situations…..It argues the pluses and minuses for the deal and how the people of Greenland, who I agree can’t be bought or sold could (although it’s unlikely), be induced through incentives to cede sovereignty ………
….The likelihood that almost any offer would be futile doesn’t in itself make the idea absurd or without merit.

The whole thing is pretty ridiculous. You can’t just “buy” another country. It really just shows how much isn’t being done when it comes to REAL problems that we should actually be addressing.

I’m not saying that there aren’t many problems facing the US and the world at large……But it seems to me Trump has shown himself particularly adept at dealing with many problems on many fronts simultaneously, certainly all the major issues …..I doubt much energy at all is being expended on Greenland.
What real problems do you feel Trump isn’t concerning himself with?

Climate change, the Flint water crisis, racism, homophobia, sexism, islamophobia, economic inequality, the humanitarian crisis by the border…

Apperently Taylor Swift doesn’t have the rights to any of her previous albums any more, so she has plans to ¿re-record? them. An interesting way to solve that problem. It will also be interesting to hear the re-recordings, as I’m sure they will be different no matter how close to the original she tries to get them.

Reminds me of Paul and the Beatles albums, except he didn’t try to re-record them.
