In the short video, I don’t see a smirk. I see someone trying to figure out exactly what he should be doing. I’m putting myself in his place. Do I just smile? Do I join in? Do I….? Does he want me to move or stand there and enjoy his singing and drumming? Is he trying to communicate something to me? I don’t want to seem culturally insensitive. Do I look that way? I just want someone to come get me out of here, please!!!
Now, as to what all else was going on before, during, and around that video clip, I don’t care to make a comment at this time.

Opening the Government is a good thing for those left without a pay-cheque for two months.
I’m not a Bible reader so it was the Caucasian Chalk Circle that first came to mind……..based I believe on the Judgement of Solomon which in turn was a folk tale reworked for the Bible.
Its power derives from the fact that sometimes it’s the person who cares most for something that gives in first.
If the Democrats now don’t give Trump what he’s asking for, (and why should they they’ve won), Trump’s finished with his grass roots…….
We will see in the coming weeks if Trump was genuinely moved by compassion or weakness, or cunning.
Paying Gov employees was a brave but maybe fatal decision for Trump……..I wouldn’t write the obituaries yet.

Thanks for X2 to Beatle news AG
Apologies I just read it today…… I agree though, hardly world news…. I should have known better that there’s a separate thread for Beatles’ news. Just thought it would lighten the mood here.
It didn’t.

So, another set of Brexit votes in the UK Parliament.
Two contradictory votes were passed.
The first was a non-binding vote rejecting a no-deal exit by 318 votes to 310.
The second was a vote, backed by Government, to send the PM back to Europe to reopen the withdrawal agreement and replace the Northern Ireland backstop that avoids the reintroduction of a hard border with the Republic of Ireland with an “alternative arrangement” by 317 votes to 301.
Prime Minister May has been trying to change the backstop for months with no luck, with the EU refusing to reopen the withdrawal agreement so far, and their immediate reaction to tonight’s votes remaining that they will not reopen it.
So, the PM managed to get her party to vote in favour of something that is already dead in the water unless the EU change their position totally…
Two months until we leave and it seems we’re no nearer a solution…

I have been enjoying the constant suggestions by Brexiteers that Ireland will leave the EU along with the UK, (which we’re one of the most pro-EU countries in Europe seeing as how they helped modernise the country’s infrastructure in the ’70’s and ’80’s, making us a proper first-world country, although it was Farage who suggested we would leave, and he’s proven himself to not be the brightest button in the Brexit suit), and in some suggestions that we would rejoin the UK (which I know a lot of Brits are culturally-ignorant about the atrocities they’ve committed in the name of the Empire but….yeesh).
I don’t have a lot of praise for our Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, but he is doing a good job in showing that Ireland won’t bend over for the UK, and isn’t going to compromise our stability and progress to give Britain an easy time. I don’t think a lot of people who voted Brexit thought of the fact that ‘leaving the EU + the Good Friday Agreement’ don’t really go together. In saying that, I’m sure a lot of people who voted Brexit don’t give a damn about Northern Ireland in the first place.

What annoys me, @AppleScruffJunior, is that Northern Ireland voted remain but are only represented in the UK Parliament by the Brexit-supporting DUP who are more powerful than usual because they’re propping up the Tories. I know and understand all the reasons Sinn Féin MPs do not take their seats in Westminster but, in my opinion, I think their 7 MPs should have taken their seats in this Parliament so that their voices were worth something in the Brexit debate.
Had Sinn Féin made the decision to make an exception on this one Parliament, so they could be heard and vote on Brexit, the maths would have been very different, the DUP wouldn’t be enough to prop up the Tories, and a minority Government would have had to play the last two years very differently.

I am not a Sinn Féin supporter whatsoever, I hate them as a party that contains/contained a load of murderers who refuse to tell their victims’ families where their loved-ones are buried but that’s for another day.
I agree with you on the not-sitting-at Westminster stance but you just know Sinn Féin is hoping they’ll get a United Ireland out of Brexit. If Brexit doesn’t happen, things will continue the way they are. If Brexit does happen (in whatever ghastly form it might take), the likelihood of Northern Ireland even considering leaving the UK would be considerably higher. I have quite a few friends who live in Fermanagh and Derry (granted they are “Catholics” not Protestants) and the only thing they dislike about a United Ireland would be not having the NHS and I imagine that opinion is shared by a lot of the N. Irish.

You do have to wonder if the stance they’ve taken, @AppleScruffJunior, might not backfire on Sinn Féin electorally on both sides of the border if Brexit badly affects the island of Ireland though. I’ve seen NI polls that say 2/3rds of the population there believe they should have taken their seats in these circumstances. A number that high must include many SF supporters. If things go badly, it could be that they are blamed for not taking part, rather than the DUP for taking part.
I’m hoping Leo stands his ground and doesn’t give way on the backstop.

When you thought Brexit couldn’t get more confusing and chaotic it does. It’s almost impossible to find three MP’s who can agree on what to do, no party can agree on the way ahead, the EU are banging their hands on the tables and walls totally fed up with it all. It’s got to be the biggest mess in British politics in centuries if not ever.
Mrs May sits at the head of the table having superglued herself into her chair, now with her eyes closed having lost her voice having been making loud shrieking noises over anyone speaking.
Mr Corbyn doesn’t buy into what his own party wants to do and so sits in a tree overlooking the field like an inept injured owl trying to figure out if there is a mouse out there worth going after.
There is absolutely no chance this is getting sorted out soon.

Summed up pretty well there. MPs have voted against a no deal Brexit in 16 days time (non binding vote, mind), but now that leaves open the question of how will we leave, if not through either a no deal or May’s deal, which has already been rejected.

Corbyn said he’d back a second referendum (his policy has been totally confusing this whole time, he’d be a lot more popular if he picked a line and stuck to it), but I think May is hell bent on delivering some kind of Brexit with some kind of deal.
And with all this going on, they’re forgetting to run the country. I can only hope the mess that has become of Brexit will cause a return to sanity after the populist hysteria of the last few years, by sheer way of warning to other countries.

Reports are that May’s twice rejected deal will be voted on again next week in the hope that enough Tories and the DUP will be willing to back it. The EU, therefore, will need to be willing to once again come to a table and concede something over the backstop or the threat of a no deal or extension forces votes to change, yet there needs to be a 75 vote swing to get it there which seems unlikely.
Who knows what is going to happen. Every option is being talked about as no one has a clue.

My take……
The trend is towards more nations rather than less……..In 1950 there were debatably 100-106 sovereign nations.
Today, again it varies, the UN recognises 197 Sovereign states…..But that figure’s confused by countries with varying degrees of devolution…..The UK for example contains 4 countries but the UN only counts us as one, or say Greenland, which seems like it should be a sovereign state but because of its link to Denmark isn’t.
It seems people want their people running their shop. The removal van outside an official residence like Number 10 every 5 years means something……Though as Brexit has demonstrated it means less than it used to.
The increasing political control of Brussels is not a direction I want to go any further along with. The globalists do….and many others…..But I don’t.
The argument usually goes, ‘we are stronger together’……That 27 other states in the EU really makes out voice heard in the world they say. But when the WTO meets formally for some discussions the UK must leave the room. One unelected and conflicted EU eurocrat speaks supposedly on our behalf. Being 1 of 28 dilutes our voice…. being shooed from the room removes it. The 5th biggest economy in the world with less say than NZ.
The EU eurocrats showed their contempt for us with their treatment of David Cameron. Everything we’ve seen since reinforces my view that they hold us in complete contempt. If their intransigence is rewarded by another referendum..And if that vote goes their way the UK is f****d. Any new deal thereafter will see us being punished for the fuss we’ve caused them…….But the EU is still heading for that iceberg, we’ll go down with them and it would serve us right.
But as others have said I don’t have a clue how this works out.
